How to Spend a Weekend in Half Moon Bay
MORE Links: Then last year on the way to Año Nuevo State Park, we passed by the quaint seaside town of Half Moon Bay and knew we’d have to come back and explore. Fortunately we had the chance to spend two nights there this summer and found it to be the perfect coastal getaway for families in Northern California. As you’ll see below, there were many reasons we loved Half Moon Bay, but one thing especially struck me.

Mavericks legend Jeff Clark’s favorite spots in Half Moon Bay
For almost two decades, Clark couldn’t convince another soul to paddle out to the 30 foot breakers crashing past Pillar Point with him. Then finally, in the 90s, big wave surfers took notice. “HMB” started to feature in spreads in surf magazines and thronged masses made winter pilgrimages down to the bluffs above Princeton by the Sea to stand in the mist and pray for a glimpse of the giants out at sea.

The Best Coastal Breweries
MORE Links: Half Moon Bay is renowned for its gargantuan waves, its prize-winning pumpkins, and its waterfront brewery. The crowd at Half Moon Bay Brewing Co. is a mixed bag of surfers, farmers, urban hipsters, and Silicon Valley techies sipping the smooth and malty Mavericks Princeton-by-the-Sea IPA (made from seven different hops varieties); the crisp, clean Harbor Lights Ale; and other award-winning libations.

Mountain bikers work trails | Community | hmbreview.com
These eco-conscious cyclers are seeking to give back to the community by helping to blaze new bike trails as well as helping to maintain existing ones. “We have a different perspective as to what the trail needs as far as maintenance,” said Barker. “It’s a great thing for us to get out there.” The club recently put forth a call to action for all cyclists to come help reroute approximately 300 yards of the trail.

Tight inventory, high-end sales push up prices | Community | hmbreview.com
The average home price for the first quarter for the coast now stands at $1,376,000, up 29 percent from a weak, wet first quarter 2017 and up 9 percent from full year. Sales prices ranged from $505,000 for a 800-square-foot cottage in La Honda to $4.6 million for an oceanfront home in Montara. Distressed sales really aren’t a factor anymore and accounted for one sale this quarter.

Mountain peak might have wrong name | Local News Stories | hmbreview.com
One of those secret, or perhaps lesser known, histories involves the name of a site around Montara Mountain above Rancho Corral de Tierra in El Granada. The Peninsula Open Space Trust acquired the property from the Eng family in 2014. Google Maps calls it Scarpet Peak. Other resources identify it as “Scarper Peak.”

Mavericks Beach: Fame and Surf
But, at Half Moon Bay, you can finally see the famed beach and waves for yourself. A quiet weave through the coastal town and industry will leave you on a winding road that ends, curiously, at a Restricted Air Force station. To the left, however, is a parking lot and one of two ways that you can reach the beach.

12 Reasons to Love The Ritz Carlton Half Moon Bay
MORE Links: The Ritz Carlton Half Moon Bay was the perfect place for our staycation.  We were not only able to catch up after my week in New York City, but escape the everyday of our area.  We were able to relax without the pressure of needing to do anything and everything (in true Jess- fashion), but could focus our energy on ourselves.  There’s no such thing as the go-go-go attitude at the Ritz, and just being there instantly puts you into a calm and relaxed state.
