Valeria Monzeglio | tommybolin.com
The woman who traveled with Tommy Bolin the last months of his life takes us there.
Valeria Monzeglio’s Story
By Valeria Monzeglio with Darlene Horwath and Sal Serio
First, I have to explain to you, and possibly disappoint you, but until the day I met Tommy, I didn’t know who he was. I wasn’t a fan of electric guitar, but more of keyboards.
In 1976 I took a year off school to travel around. I started from Acapulco, Mexico, because my parents had friends living there. One day, in a private club in Acapulco, Billy Preston gave a concert. I met the crew and I was very interested in the work they were doing. I thought that could be something I could do to earn some money to travel around (that concept was something new to me…a “roadie”).
After two months I left Acapulco and went to Los Angeles (Orange County), where one of the guys from the crew was living. He was a drum roadie and he taught me all about it. Then I moved to Hollywood to try to find a job and ended up as a waitress at the Rainbow. Being very naïve as I was, and coming from a small Swiss town, it was very difficult for me. I had girlfriends who were groupies. That was another new word and world to me. I didn’t like it at all.
At the Rainbow the famous people were very rude to me. I was a horrible waitress as well, not my job. But through that job I met a really nice, sweet guy. It was Tommy.
As I never told this story to anybody, I had a problem recalling the details, so I went to look in the cellar for my “Tommy memory box.” Great! I found my diary. I never opened it before, as I was scared. I’ll tell you what I wrote.

ImagineMDD: Mollie Sugden, Are You Being Served 1922-2009
Mollie Sugden, perhaps best known in the US for playing Mrs. Slocombe on the British comedy, Are You Being Served? died on July first.
Mary Isobel Sugden was born in Keighley in Yorkshire on July 21 1922. Her father ran an iron and steel company. She trained at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama in London.
She was best known for her comedy roles often playing battleaxes. She also appeared as the fearsome Mrs Hutchinson in The Liver Birds, but she played numerous roles through her long career. In the 1990s, Are You Being Served? had a spin-off called Grace and Favour. It was popular in the US as well titled Are You Being Served Again?
"I am unanimous in that."
In early episodes, Mollie Sugden had her hair dyed, bleached and re-dyed every time Mrs Slocombe changed her hair colour. It had been her own idea, but it meant that she sometimes had to turn up at her sons' school with her hair a multi-colored mess. Later, she saved her own hair by wearing wigs.
Mollie Sugden and her husband had identical twin sons, born when she was 41. She confessed that when they were very young she had to keep them labeled so that she could tell them apart and that "more than once I bathed the same one twice". She feared having both name labels off at the same time. Sugden's twin sons, Robin and Simon Moore, were at her bedside, according to her agent Joan Reddin.
Sugden lived in Surrey and was married to fellow actor William Moore, who died in 2000. She never fully recovered from his death, said Ms Reddin. "They were very much in love," she said. "She started to go down when he died."
An interview asked about the high points of her career. "Oh there's been so many. I've been lucky. I've had a lovely, lovely time.
"Obviously ups and downs and worries, especially when the children were at the school, and if my husband was up north working - and he worked in Coronation Street for two years. ... So there were times, but on the whole I've had a lovely time."

10 Moments That Show the Awesomeness of Rush's Neil Peart | Consequence of Sound
From air drummers to Freaks and Geeks, the beloved stickman made a lasting impact
For decades, Neil Peart had been considered one of rock’s greatest drummers — rightfully mentioned in the same breath as John Bonham, Keith Moon, Ginger Baker, and Stewart Copeland, among only a select few.
So, when news broke on January 10, 2020, that the long-time Rush drummer had passed away a few days earlier at the age of 67, after a secret prolonged battle with brain cancer (glioblastoma), it expectedly shook the rock community. Tributes poured in from dozens of fellow musicians, many of whom were highly influenced by Peart’s drumming.
While Rush originally formed in 1968, it wasn’t until singer-bassist Geddy Lee and guitarist Alex Lifeson welcomed Peart into the lineup in 1974 that the band’s music began to coalesce into its trademark prog-metal sound — with Peart providing his exceptional drum skills, as well as serving as the band’s lyricist.

Remembering Rush's Neil Peart, The Relentless Idealist | Consequence of Sound
Even amid tragedy, the beloved drummer's beliefs and music never crumbled into cynicism
The first thing to say about Neil Peart is that he always meant it. The drummer and lyricist of Rush, who died this week, spent his life battling to keep hold of a certain earnestness, in spite of the world.
This is never an easy task, but the obstacles were especially significant in Peart’s case. His band got famous. He read widely. His life was marked by tragedy — in the space of a single year in the late ’90s, his daughter died in a car crash, his wife of cancer.
Any of these things are liable to strip away romantic inclinations. Getting famous almost inevitably entails some amount of compromise and some unpleasant discoveries about other people, or about yourself. When Rush opened for bands like Aerosmith in the ’70s, the sound crews would sabotage their sound checks, jealous and not wanting to have them outshine the main act.
Equally, with culture often comes a tendency to analyze, to doubt. Tragedy, when it befalls especially idealistic people, tends either to make them cynical or break them completely. So it’s impressive how slow Peart always was to turn towards cynicism, and how even when he was disillusioned, he managed to be disillusioned in an idealistic way.

Dave Grohl on Rush Drummer Neil Peart: "The World Lost a True Giant" | Consequence of Sound
Adds Foo Fighters bandmate Taylor Hawkins: "Neil Peart had the hands of God"
The tragic passing of Rush drummer Neil Peart has been met with heartfelt reactions from many musicians. One of his biggest fans is Foo Fighters frontman Dave Grohl, who penned a profound tribute to the legendary stickman.
Grohl, of course, rose to fame as a drummer with Nirvana, and Peart had always been one of his biggest inspirations. In fact, Grohl and Foo Fighters drummer Taylor Hawkins had the honor of inducting Rush into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame back in 2013. Heck, the Foos even dressed up as Rush to perform alongside the actual band at the ceremony.
Peart passed away on Tuesday (January 7th) after a secret three-year battle with brain cancer, although the news wasn’t made public until Friday. Upon learning of Peart’s death, Grohl shared the following on Foo Fighters’ social pages...

LONG READ: 'The Wilsey Sound': The Rise & Fall of James Calvin Wilsey - Rhythms Music Magazine
The man behind the haunting sound of Chris Isaak’s hit, “Wicked Game,” died on Christmas Eve day; he was a friend of mine.
When my son Joe was 14 years old, in 1991, Jimmy Wilsey gave him guitar lessons as a favor to me. The Chris Isaak song “Wicked Game,” featuring Jimmy playing the haunting guitar intro, was a hit at the time. Each week, the two of us, Joe and I, would drive from our house in the Glen Park district of San Francisco, up and over the hill, down to the funky apartment in the Haight Ashbury Jimmy shared with a few friends.
For about an hour Jimmy would patiently show my son how to play the killer riffs that drive the Rolling Stones’ “The Last Time” and “(I Can’t Get No) Satisfaction” or some other oldie Joe wanted to learn. There was no charge for these lessons. Jimmy was a busy man, he had plenty of other things to do, but he and I had become friends, and that was the kind of thing Jimmy Wilsey did for a friend.
On Christmas day 2018, I was stunned to learn, when I visited the Mabuhay Gardens Facebook group, that on the previous afternoon, Christmas Eve day, my friend James Calvin Wilsey had died. Later, his niece, Aubrey Baca, told me his death was due to “overall organ failure.” Jimmy, who played on the first four Chris Isaak albums and released one solo album, was only 61.

Music World Reacts to Death of Rush Drummer Neil Peart | Consequence of Sound
Members of KISS, GNR, Black Sabbath, Metallica and more pay tribute to legendary drummer
The music world was hit with the shocking news on Friday that legendary Rush drummer Neil Peart had passed away on January 7th, after an unpublicized three-and-half-year battle with brain cancer.
As to be expected, Rush’s fans are absolutely devastated by the news, as are the band’s peers in the rock community and from other musical genres. Peart was considered one of the greatest drummers in the history of rock music, and was also Rush’s primary lyricist.
In addition to a statement from Rush themselves, tributes and reactions have poured in from members of KISS, Black Sabbath, Guns N’ Roses, Metallica, Nirvana, and many more artists.
Among the posts below are tweets from Gene Simmons, Paul Stanley, Geezer Butler, Slash, Peter Frampton, Jack Black, Kirk Hammett, Krist Novoselic, Scott Ian, Billy Corgan, Dave Lombardo, and former Dream Theater drummer Mike Portnoy, who calls Peart “one of my greatest heroes of all time.”
Our thoughts and prayers are with Neil Peart’s family, friends, and bandmates during this difficult time.
