A Conversation With Christian Picciolini - The Atlantic | A Reformed White Nationalist Says the Worst Is Yet to Come
I was working with a 31-year-old man in Buffalo, New York, several years ago, and he had been discharged from the military for an injury that he suffered during basic training and wasn’t able to deploy to Iraq at the time. And he saw all his friends go off to war and fighting for America, and he wasn’t racist going in, but he started going in that direction and became very much of an Islamophobe. When he came home, he started drinking and got really heavily involved in the white-power movement.

He got a copy of my book and he wasn’t very happy with [it], because I had left the movement and he was still very much in it. And after a couple of weeks of talking with him, I finally met him in person and asked him if he’d ever met a Muslim person before, and he said he didn’t want to; he thought that they were evil, the enemy, animals, whatever, insert word here. And when I flew out I had arranged, unbeknownst to him, a meeting with an imam at a local mosque. When I convinced him to go, we spoke with the imam, and then two hours later, it was as if these men had known each other their whole lives. The guy who I was working with was a Christian, and he learned that Jesus was part of the Koran, and Muslims revered him as a prophet—all these things that he never knew. They were both Chuck Norris fans; they bonded over that. We were crying at the end, and hugging.

Black men sentenced to more time for committing the exact same crime as a white person, study finds - The Washington Post
Black men who commit the same crimes as white men receive federal prison sentences that are, on average, nearly 20 percent longer, according to a new report on sentencing disparities from the United States Sentencing Commission (USSC).

These disparities were observed “after controlling for a wide variety of sentencing factors,” including age, education, citizenship, weapon possession and prior criminal history.

Bernie Sanders Talks Reparations in Breakfast Club Appearance
“Reparations” can mean a lot of different things. Cash payouts of thousands if not hundreds of thousands to people who are not prepared will not improve their lives in the long run. You don’t fix poverty with financial payouts, there have to be long term institutional changes first.

As a black man living in the south, I think reparations should be a mix of higher minimum wages, college tuition credit, ending the drug war, creating increased opportunities for minority owned businesses (eg. legal marijuana companies and shops) and measures to reduce incarceration and increased job placements. The damage white supremacy has done to every level of black society must be addressed first, because pouring money into the community with no long term plan for wealth retention and creation will fail.

Giving money sounds great, but if it means that it gives a pass to every racist white person to say “see racism all over cause we gave you money” no thanks. Instead of solving problems it will open up new ones, and anyone who is given a lot of money without knowing how to handle it will soon be parted from it. And you’ll be right back where you started. For example take a look at lottery winners... https://www.cleveland.com/business/index.ssf/2016/01/why_do_70_percent_of_lottery_w.html

Direct payment would be a tiny bandage over the gaping wound of white supremacy, and I applaud Sanders for not being on board with it.

tl:dr Sanders position is nuanced and makes more sense then direct payouts.
