Classics Professor Wessam Elmeligi posted an essay to the Loft Literary Center website titled, "Exploring Fairytales: My Father's Legacy," about the experience during his summer visit to his hometown, Alexandria, Egypt, where he rediscovered children's books written and illustrated by his father from the 1950s to the 1970s. The books reflected the transition Egypt and many countries in the MENA region were going through and the role that ancient history and mythology played in defining his father's generation.

Are protests in Africa politically or economically motivated? This new book has answers | Washington Post | August 24, 2018
Review of “Political Protest in Contemporary Africa,” a new book by Political Science professor Lisa Mueller, coming out this fall. Mueller’s study of protests in Africa shows that there are two forces driving them: political grievances among the middle class and material grievances among the poor. She argues that political grievances largely determine when protests will occur, while material grievances largely explain who is likely to participate in the protests.
