SMART (by Sustainable Food Systems GmbH)
About (from FIBL):
"The term "sustainability" is used inflationary and inconsistently. Hundreds of sustainability frameworks have been developed and more and more companies have "sustainable" products on offer. For consumers and buyers it is very difficult to tell whether a farm or a company are actually operating sustainably or not. In addition, farmers and companies in the agricultural and food sector face the question how to assess their sustainability performance in a comparable way and to communicate it in a credible way, without pursuing green-washing.

Therefore the Research Institute of Organic Agriculture FiBL has chosen to develop SMART – Sustainability Monitoring and Assessment RouTine – a method that allows farms and companies in the food sector to assess their sustainability in a credible, transparent and comparable manner. SMART is the world’s first tool, which is fully consistent with the SAFA-Guidelines (UN FAO Sustainability Assessment of Food and Agriculture systems) and provides an efficient manner to apply them in practice.

However, SMART is not a new standard, certification system or label but solely an analysis and assessment instrument. It therefore does not compete with existing standards and certificates, but is a useful supplement.

In order to provide SMART sustainability assessment services FiBL founded the spin-off Sustainable Food Systems GmbH (SFS) which now is the owner of the lincense rights and rights of use of SMART. The SFS is owned by FiBL Switzerland, Germany and Austria."

Sustainable Foods Summit
"Since 2009, the Sustainable Foods Summit has been covering major developments in the food industry concerning sustainability and and eco-labels, such as organic, fairtrade, RSPO, etc. What are some of the common ways food and ingredient firms are reducing their environmental impacts? Is the way forward for sustainable sourcing with third party standards or in-house schemes? How are sustainability metrics used by the food industry? How can sustainable agriculture help improve food security and communities? Such questions are regularly addressed at this international series of summits."

Annually a European edition, an Asia-Pacific edition, a Latin American edition and a North American edition.

Organic Cotton Accelerator (OCA)
"Focuses on creating a prosperous organic cotton sector that benefits everyone—from farmer to consumer.
At OCA, we take a unique approach to our work that focuses upon farmer-level impact. We do not just seek to increase the organic cotton supply, but to grow demand for organic cotton that has been produced in a way that strengthens the business case for farmers. By rewarding the right practices on the ground, our work catalyses a wider chain reaction that goes beyond positive change at farm-level and creates opportunities for all in organic cotton.
As an accelerator, we unite those who are committed to being part of the change in organic cotton. Together with our market-driven interventions that are designed to be self-sustaining and scalable in the long-run, we build on existing initiatives, mobilize others into action and create shared opportunities across the supply chain."

Also seed breeding programs and providing platforms to share knowledge, best practices and lessons learned in the sector.

Meet the woman leading China's new organic farming army
Comprehensive article about China's CSA landscape, some of their pioneers (ShiYan from LittleDongkey / SharedHarvest and Tianle from BJ FarmersMarket), the underlying reasons (pollution) and the required mindset shift (by consumers and farmers). It also refers to the Chinese term "Xin Nongren 新农人 New Farmers", a term fondly applied young Chinese who have quit jobs in the cities or elsewhere to devote themselves to sustainable farming.

Organic Cocoa Market, 2015-2025 by Segmentation: Based on Product, Based on Application and Based on Region
Excerpt: "The certified organic cocoa market represents a very small share of the total cocoa market, estimated around 0.5% of total production [...] the demand for organic cocoa products are growing at a very strong pace, the supply side faces a strong challenge to meet the demand of organic cocoa. Since, farmers are paying ample amount for producing organic cocoa, production of organic cocoa is more in least developed countries. Demand for organic cocoa products are very high in U.S, U.K and Germany, hence organic cocoa are supplied to developed economies of North America and Western Europe to manufacture organic cocoa products. Currently, Dominican Republic is dominating the organic cocoa market" HAG

[...] opposing this development." [...] "using the methods of organic agriculture and forestry, they concentrate on as varied production as possible. In the forested area they grow coffee, cocoa, fruit and spices (ginger, turmeric, vanilla, lemongrass, cinnamon etc.) under the high trees, thus creating a productive forest." [...] "RFA and UTZ are agrochemical standards. Agrochemicals are never sustainable, this kind of standard perpetuates the suffering." New U.S, Swiss organic arrangement marks a critical step forward with Europe
Excerpts: "The new pact allows organic products certified in the United States, or Switzerland to be sold as organic in either country and eliminates the need for two sets of fees, inspections and paperwork while still upholding high organic oversight standards. [...] The signing of the U.S.-Switzerland Organic Equivalency Agreement builds on the U.S. 2012 landmark equivalency agreement with the European Union, and in 2009 with Canada, the two biggest trading partners for the U.S. organic sector. It also follows the opening of the Asian market to American organic made possible by the equivalency arrangements with Korea in 2014 and Japan in 2013." HAG

Organic certification opens Chinese market for SA Winery
Many organic imports to China got prohibited by the increasingly more stringently applied Chinese organic certification requirement. Since this process leads to costs of thousands of Euros and months of paperwork, some organic associations came up with a Global Organic Market Access Agreement in cooperation with a Chinese organic certifier. Like in this case the National Association for Sustainable Agriculture, Australia (NASAA) with the Chinese certified CHC. HAG NASAA Certified Organic operator to attain full organic certification under the NASAA – CHC . In March 2014 NASAA signed a global market access agreement with Chinese organic certifier CHC to inspect organic operations within Australia for export to China.

Organic Content Standard
Abstract by "The Organic Content Standard (OCS) is a new Chain of Custody Standard to track certified organically grown raw materials through the supply chain with the use of Scope Certificate and transition certificates, all verified by an independent third party, Textile Exchange reports. The OCS will allow any kind of certified organically grown material now and is no longer limited to cotton. It will replace the OE 100 and OE Blended standards, within an allowed transition time, and combines them into one standard. There will continue to be options for labeling, according to final organic material percentages and whether it has been blended with its conventional counterpart. Since the OCS can be used with any raw material, it is relevant for industries beyond textiles." HAG

Organic certification officials regularly accept "gifts" from food companies in China
IFOAM Asia president Zhou Zejiang feels comparatively with conventional production has organic become over-regulated.

"17-digit tracking number on the packaging of all organic products, and that has to link to full information – size and weight, source, the producer."

"You can’t just rely on tough [top-down] supervision, you need joint oversight by consumers and society."

"But once food safety emerged as an area of concern, “organic” came to be seen as some sort of savior. I don’t think it’s right for organic agriculture to be the focus of the food safety agenda."

"And as organic food is pricier than other products, consumers are more concerned – so organic food has actually become the focus of regulation."

"And besides certification, I’d like to see a system for building trust between responsible consumers and honest producers, encouraging local sourcing and consumption, reducing food miles, protecting the environment and saving resources."
