The New Tech CEO Archetype – AVC
I believe that product is the heart and soul of tech companies, it is where it all comes together. You can’t build a great company without great products (or great people). So it’s heartening to me to see that the next generation of technology leaders is coming from product management. I think that bodes well for those companies and the tech industry in general. // learned from past mistakes, putting COO, finance guys, pure MBA managers, or else in the CEO role of Tech Companies *Yahoo! anybody? after all in a new world that is being build, its about the product and thus the user (experience) [UI UX product strategy, and thus companies strategy alignment]. And not about purely sales and marketing (stuffing products down the throat of companies that the end users hate (and the manage hates as well because staff are complaining and lost productivity), but the procurement manager (or CIO) got a great deal on and got a raise). << that was so 90's and the first decade of the 2000's.

The first, and most obvious, is that they are a gimmick. But these buy buttons also support a shopping experience that involves almost zero interaction, whether that means browsing store shelves (IRL!) or tapping a touchscreen to browse and buy virtually.

Umfang und Art des Angebots dürften der Konkurrenz das Leben schwer machen. [...] Apple muss damit nicht reich werden Allerdings sind die Ausgangspunkte sehr unterschiedlich. Bei einem Umsatz von 1,3 Milliarden Dollar machte Spotify im vergangenen Jahr 197 Millionen Euro Verlust. Mit dem Geldverdienen klappt es also nicht einmal beim Marktführer so richtig. Und trotzdem wird das schwedische Unternehmen mit acht Milliarden Dollar bewertet. Für Apple aber ist es viel einfacher: Der kalifornische Konzern muss mit seinem Angebot gar kein Geld verdienen. Der iTunes Store und der App Store dienen in erster Linie dazu, Kunden an Apples Plattformen zu binden und damit den Verkauf der viel profitableren Apple-Hardware anzukurbeln. Genauso ist es auch mit Apple Music.

Other platforms emerged 2 hang digitally with ur friends that are way more simplified (tuned down 2 1 usage; Appification) with much less bells & whistles & complexity/depth & distraction vs hooked). Thus the defensive acquisition of WhatsApp, Instagram & fork-out of Messenger. They saw Snapchat as a vector of attack bc of the appeal of ephemeral in todays 'always on record' products. [Samsung] is so identified with the government and the progress of Korea that the country is occasionally referred to locally as the Republic of Samsung. So when Samsung repeatedly presented bad news to investors this past year, particularly its results last quarter that showed a drop of 15% of its operating profit — the first drop in three years — there has been something of a slowly boiling panic underway in the country. From talks with people who work at the company, stress levels are off the charts, intensified by the pressure to return previously-paid performance bonuses. My colleague John Biggs has already talked about Samsung’s race to the bottom, but that was before these most recent results. With consumers unwilling to pay top dollar for Samsung’s best smartphones and Chinese manufacturers readying a dizzying array of competitive and inexpensive products, Samsung faces what might be considered an almost overpowering inevitability crisis about its downfall.

YouTube Music’s Head Quits, a Setback to Paid Service - Digits - WSJ
LaRosa is the second person in charge of YouTube’s music service to leave over the past 12 months. The other, Nikhil Chandhok, left last fall according to his LinkedIn profile. Chandhok was a director in charge of music, paid subscriptions and live streaming, according to the profile. Both departures resulted in part from frustrations that YouTube has been unable to launch its music subscription service in the year-plus since the first version of it was developed, according to a person familiar the matter. Those delays have resulted from internal arguments about how the service should be designed, including what features YouTube should charge users for and how the service should be integrated with the rest of YouTube. [Is another testament that YT is 4 Larry Page only 2nd Class [no urgency]. GOOG wont be hurt by those incidents, but moral & motivation suffers. The cash cow is & will be running in perpetuity (Google Search (A Portal) with AdSense & AdSense across the web).]

As I’ve written time and again, Box’s destiny is hardly certain at this stage and drawing such rigid lines in the sand could easily come back to burn the company. Levie, it seems, had no other choice than to accept these onerous terms. It’s not altogether uncommon for late stage investors to request downside protection when a company’s performance is in question. Early stage investors do the same by way of liquidation preference and discounted, capped notes. But the very extent of TPG and Coatue’s protections suggest that Box was in a particularly bad negotiating position.
