The Mercury Project: Home
Mercury is a logic/functional programming language which combines the clarity and expressiveness of declarative programming with advanced static analysis and error detection features.

Its highly optimized execution algorithm delivers efficiency far in excess of existing logic programming systems, and close to conventional programming systems. Mercury addresses the problems of large-scale program development, allowing modularity, separate compilation, and numerous optimization/time trade-offs.

Man Accused of Dumping Mercury Down Drains Appears in Court
A man pleaded not guilty Monday to felony charges of illegally disposing hazardous materials as related hazmat investigations spanned throughout the county.
The Environmental Protection Agency told NBC 7 the man was trying to extract gold from ore and other metals using mercury and illegally disposed the material.
Michael Starr, 49, left a short-term rental house in Pacific Beach in disarray in early October, according to prosecutors.
When clean-up crews came in, they noticed awful smells coming from the oven and called the police.
While bomb and arson investigators found no threat, law enforcement found signs of mercury having been illegally disposed down drains and in trash chutes.
Prosecutors said Starr also contaminated a house on La Jolla Farms Road with mercury.
Starr cooperated and led law enforcement to Golden Triangle Self Storage in Sorrento Valley, where he was storing mercury and other chemicals.

EPA to unveil plans to weaken rule limiting toxic mercury pollution (The Guardian)
"The EPA isn’t rescinding the standard as of yet but has finished deciding to reconsider the analysis for the Obama-era rule" — with the intent to contest or undo rules being reported on, one does not expect much of enforcement, whatever the rules are.

Demolition of a Mercury Contaminated Facility
URS / CH2M Oak Ridge LLC was awarded a contract to perform demolition of the West COLEX process system that was shut down in the 1960s. Only residual amounts of mercury were thought to remain in the facility. That proved not to be the case. Lessons Learned: D&D is a unique subset of construction requiring skill sets and expertise not otherwise needed in other construction fields. When initiating work on a facility with chemicals and configurations that are different from those previously worked around, it is critical to have a full understanding of the challenges and limitations present throughout the whole life cycle of the project.

Mercury leaks inside U.S. Postal vehicle in James City Co. neighborhood
JAMES CITY CO., Va. - James City County emergency personnel responded to a hazmat situation in the 4600 block of Noland Boulevard in Lightfoot Thursday afternoon.

A call reporting an unknown substance that had apparently leaked from a container came in at 2:35 p.m.

Authorities say the substance spilled inside a U.S. Postal Service vehicle. The postal service employee received medical evaluation and required only minimal care.

There is no indication of any immediate concern at this time, according to emergency personnel.

A firefighter was taken to Sentara Norfolk General Hospital for heat-related problems. He is said to be in stable condition.

The James City County Fire and Police Departments, along with the U.S. Postal Inspection Service, Virginia Department of Emergency Management and the York County Department of Fire and Life Safety also responded to the scene. The Department of Fire and Life Safety assisted in identifying the substance.

The Liberty Crossings neighborhood was blocked off for hours before residents were allowed back into their homes.

In a statement, a spokeswoman with the U.S. Postal Service said the spilled substance was identified as mercury and that the mail that was inside the vehicle will not be delivered until it has been deemed safe to do so:

Three Days After Mercury Spill, Still No Mail for Some in DFW
If you checked your mail Friday and the box was empty, you are not alone.
People across the metroplex have told us, they are still not getting mail three days after a hazmat spill shut down the U.S. Postal Service distribution and processing center in Coppell.
It all started Tuesday morning when a mailed package containing mercury spilled. Our media partners at KRLD report that it was four gallons worth of mercury, but the USPS currently will not confirm.
That day, employees were told to get screened when leaving the building and to put their clothes and shoes in a plastic bag outside their home, while they waited for further instruction. Mail was temporarily redirected and workers were assigned to different locations nearby.

Mercury spill inside Bourne condo prompts hazmat response
BOURNE, Mass. - Bourne firefighters and a hazardous materials team are on the scene of a mercury spill at a condo complex Tuesday night.

First responders were called around 6 p.m. to 9 Ships Way after a vial of mercury spilled.
The unit was immediately evacuated and secured.

Bourne Fire requested a Tier 1 hazmat response. Bourne Fire is part of Department of Fire Services Hazmat District #1, which consists of 110 cities and towns. Each department has firefighters who are trained hazmat technicians. A Tier 1 response calls for 5 firefighters from surrounding cities and towns to respond to the scene. Bourne Fire Chief Norman Sylvester, a hazmat technician, is the incident commander.

The hazmat team is trying to collect as much of the mercury as possible.

When spilled, mercury breaks apart in beads instead of clumping in a puddle. These beads can be very tiny, making them hard to find. Mercury also evaporates at room temperature and its fumes do not have a smell, which makes it difficult to detect without sensors or other specialized instruments.

Bourne Fire Deputy Joseph Carrara told Boston 25 News the mercury spilled on a hardwood floor, which is harder to clean up than a tile or linoleum surface. The spaces in the hardwood floors make it harder to remove all of the mercury.

Mercury can turn into poisonous vapors that can have dangerous health effects, especially for children and pregnant women.

Editorial: Elect prosecutor, not plagiarist, Contra Costa DA
Nearly nine months after the Contra Costa Board of Supervisors selected a plagiarist as county district attorney, voters will get a chance to reconsider the pick.

They should end more than a year of turmoil by electing Senior Deputy District Attorney Paul Graves, the only candidate with meaningful experience as a prosecutor, to lead the DA’s office.

They should reject Diana Becton, who has never prosecuted a criminal case but was nevertheless appointed last year to fill the remainder of the term Mark Peterson vacated after his felony perjury conviction stemming from illegal personal use of campaign funds.

Becton, a retired judge, narrowly won the interim appointment despite submitting an application in which she copied and pasted without attribution from Martin Luther King Jr.’s “I Have a Dream” speech, opinions from an open letter written by two U.S. senators, and excerpts from the Alameda County, Santa Clara County and San Francisco district attorney websites.
