"Let’s imagine your job is to plan a conference for hundreds of attendees from around country. Your aim is to minimize the total distance that attendees will have to travel to visit your conference. If over half your attendees live in Seattle, it’s possible to show that in order to minimize the total distance, you should host conference directly in Seattle! (which is counterintuitive to a first blush common sense guess, which might have you selecting some common centroid point, which, as we now know, would result in the least-squares solution).

With over half the attendees in one location, you can see how the median must fall in that location, and thus we should host it there!

[1807.03462] A Curious Result on Breaking Ties among Sample Medians
It is well known that any sample median value (not necessarily unique) minimizes the empirical L1 loss. Interestingly, we show that the minimizer of the L1+ϵ loss exhibits a singular phenomenon that provides a unique definition for the sample median as ϵ→0. This definition is the unique point among all candidate median values that balances the logarithmic moment of the empirical distribution. The result generalizes directly to breaking ties among sample quantiles.
