MLB -- Manny Machado, Yasiel Puig embrace their villain roles all the way to the World Series
MILWAUKEE -- It was the top of the sixth inning. The Los Angeles Dodgers had two on with two out while still only leading by a run, their World Series hopes still very much teetering in the balance. And Miller Park began to shake. Yasiel Puig, the locals' second-favorite villain, walked to the batter's box, and in that moment, David Freese thought about how he wouldn't want it to be anybody else.
The Dodgers are loaded with star talent, from Justin Turner to Manny Machado to Cody Bellinger. But Puig doesn't fear situations like these, perhaps doesn't even register them. He embraces the noise like few others would. They fuel his spirit. Freese has learned that about Puig in less than two months as his teammate, and so he turned to Dodgers catcher Yasmani Grandal and said, "This is who you want up."

Machado, Bellinger and Puig: The bunt and the bops – Dodger Thoughts
Manny Machado’s shock-the-world, Ahmad Abdul Rahim-style, two-strike bunt to start the second inning of Game 7 of the National League Championship Series was like manna from heaven for the small-ball starved crowd, and as a guy who’s not part of that crowd, I couldn’t have been happier.
It was an exquisite play from a player who throughout the NLCS has remained every bit the confounding conquerer he was when October began, brilliant in conception and execution. No doubt, many people watching used that bunt to double down on how simple the play is. I admired the skill involved.

2018 NLCS: Manny Machado is ready to make his own postseason legacy - True Blue LA
Machado looks locked in ahead of NLCS
The Dodgers are ready to defend their National League Championship title, but this time around they will have to battle the Brewers and not the Cubs. The Dodgers knocked out a very promising young Braves team on Monday night in Atlanta, a club that is sure to factor into the postseason for years to come. Manny Machado was the player of the game, driving in four runs to help the Dodgers clinch the series with a 6-2 win.
Now Manny and the Dodgers will turn their focus to Milwaukee, a team who was one of several teams pursuing Machado before the July non-waiver trade deadline. The Dodgers got Manny in a blockbuster trade, while the Brewers snatched up NL MVP frontrunner Christian Yelich prior to the season. Now the two talented superstars will battle it out against each other to get to the Fall Classic.

Manny Machado confounds, Manny Machado conquers – Dodger Thoughts
Manny Machado occupies an unsettled vortex in Dodgerland, swirling between Kirk Gibson, Andruw Jones, Raul Mondesi, Yu Darvish and Manny Ramirez.
Machado’s body language in failure might be the strangest I’ve seen in a Dodger since Jones, the once-great player from an Eastern division who had this weird coping mechanism of smiling when he struck out. To be clear, I don’t think body language reveals anything significant — an indifferent posture is not a window to the soul. Still, when things go wrong, there’s not exactly inspiration in Machado’s smirk or stride.

Dodgers' Manny Machado 'locked in,' ready for Brewers in NLCS
ATLANTA -- The showdown between baseball's hottest teams is set, in no small part thanks to a big night from a player both teams in that showdown badly wanted in July.
That player is Manny Machado, who drove in four runs Monday to lift the Los Angeles Dodgers to a series-clinching 6-2 victory against the Atlanta Braves. The Dodgers won the National League Division Series against the upstart Braves 3-1.

Dodgers vs. Braves - Game Recap - October 8, 2018 - ESPN
ATLANTA -- When the Los Angeles Dodgers bolstered their already power-packed lineup with slugging shortstop Manny Machado, this is just what they had in mind.
Plenty of long balls. Another deep run in the postseason.
Next stop, the NL Championship Series for the third year in a row.
Machado drove in four runs -- three of them with a seventh-inning shot into the left-field seats -- and the Dodgers finished off the Atlanta Braves with a 6-2 victory Monday in the NL Division Series.
"There are so many expectations put on him," Dodgers manager Dave Roberts said. "We have a lot of good players, but I can't say enough about his focus and preparedness."
Los Angeles took the best-of-five series 3-1 and advanced to face the Brewers. Game 1 is Friday night in Milwaukee.

2018 NLDS: Dodgers clinch third straight NLCS trip behind Machado, Freese - True Blue LA
When the Dodgers acquired Manny Machado and David Freese, they envisioned a pair of players that would help down the stretch and contribute to a deep playoff run. Both would play a big part Monday to help secure a third straight trip to the NLCS.
Entering the game, Machado was a quiet 1-for-12 at the plate with a two-run homer in Game 2 as the only hit to his name in the series. That all changed when he drove in four runs, none bigger than a three-run homer in the seventh inning to secure a 6-2 win for the Dodgers, eliminating the Braves.

Manny Machado gives young Dodgers fan a birthday to remember - True Blue LA
The Dodgers picked up a 3-0 victory over the Atlanta Braves on Saturday night. With the win, LA now holds a 2-0 series lead. Clayton Kershaw was phenomenal, and Manny Machado and Yasmani Grandal both hit home runs.
Though, there may be an even bigger story from the game.
On a 3-0 pitch, Machado connected on one right down the middle, sending his first career postseason homer with the Dodgers into the left-field pavilion.

Young Los Angeles Dodgers fan celebrates birthday by catching Manny Machado homer
Donovan Farrell got an unexpected birthday present Friday night -- a Manny Machado home run ball and a meeting with the man who hit it.
Donovan, who turned 12 on Friday, caught Machado's two-run home run in the first inning of the Los Angeles Dodgers' Game 2 against the Atlanta Braves in the National League Division Series.
"It was an explosion of happiness. I was just going up and down like crazy," Donovan said. "Everybody was high-fives, wanted a selfie, it was amazing."
But the congratulations didn't end there. Donovan met with Machado after the game, and the star shortstop signed the ball.
"He thought it was a great catch," Donovan said. "He said he hit it really hard, so he was surprised I caught it. And then he wrote, 'To Donovan, best wishes, great catch,' and then he just wrote, 'Happy birthday.'"
Donovan said he had never caught a home run ball before, even though his family has season tickets, but that he remembered his little league training.
"I was just thinking like little league, like we've practiced fly balls so many times, like I should catch it by now. I just caught it, and it was amazing," he said.
The Dodgers gave Donovan another gift by beating the Braves 3-0 to take a 2-0 lead in the NLDS.
He said it was "by far" his best birthday.
"Tonight was just my night," he said.

MLB -- Keeping Manny Machado could cause chain reaction for Los Angeles Dodgers
LOS ANGELES -- The widespread, undying belief that the Los Angeles Dodgers will be major players in free agency seems almost laughable. Thirteen nine-figure contracts have been given to free agents since Andrew Friedman became the club's president of baseball operations in October 2014. None came from his Dodgers.
Leading up to the 2017 season, the Dodgers spent $80 million to retain the services of closer Kenley Jansen and rewarded third baseman Justin Turner with a four-year, $64 million deal. They previously allocated $48 million each for three middle-tier starting pitchers -- Rich Hill, Brandon McCarthy and Scott Kazmir -- and guaranteed Kenta Maeda a minimum of $25 million over the life of an eight-year contract.
That's basically it for long-term contracts on Friedman's watch.
But this offseason could be different.

Ten games in, Manny Machado already boosting Dodgers – Dodger Thoughts
Manny Machado’s first 50 plate appearances as a Dodger are now in the books: .400 on-base percentage, .442 slugging percentage. During that time, the Dodgers went 6-4 on a road trip against three playoff contenders, a trip that you could have called a complete success had they won the 16-inning game at Philadelphia and taken all three series.
As it stands, avoiding a no-hitter with a down-to-the-last strike single by Chris Taylor on Sunday at Atlanta provides a nice bounce heading into a homestand that offers Machado’s debut in Dodger whites but hardly any relief: four games against the Brewers, followed by the three-game World Series rematch with the Astros.

MLB -- Who might have won the World Series at the deadline -- or lost it?
Teams that might have won a World Series at the trade deadline:
Los Angeles Dodgers
Additions: Manny Machado, Brian Dozier, John Axford
Everyone tends to believe you need to add pitching at the deadline, but that's only because everyone dreams on the scenario Justin Verlander provided the Astros last year, when he went 4-1 in the postseason with a 2.21 ERA. The Dodgers traded for the best player -- by far -- to change teams in Machado and doubled down on right-handed, power-hitting infielders with Tuesday's acquisition of Dozier. They did so while giving up only one significant prospect in Yusniel Diaz.
The Dodgers now have incredible lineup depth and versatility, and they have hedged against the return of Justin Turner, who is currently on the DL with a groin strain and hasn't been right all season after fracturing his wrist in spring training. Dozier hasn't had a great season, but he has a history of heating up the final two months (17 home runs in 2017; 23 in 2016).
What can go wrong: The bullpen has been hot in July but is still inexperienced, and Axford isn't really a dependable eighth-inning guy. Clayton Kershaw is healthy ... for now. Matt Kemp and Max Muncy were two of the biggest surprises of the first half and are strong regression candidates.

Manny Machado of Los Angeles Dodgers delivers deep consolation in L.A. debut
LOS ANGELES -- Dodger Stadium had already begun to empty, but Manny Machado's most enthusiastic cheering section was still around by the time his moment came.
It was in the bottom of the ninth, with one out in a game the Los Angeles Dodgers trailed by four. Machado connected on a 98 mph fastball -- the type of pitch he had been swinging through of late -- and sent it over the center-field fence, 403 feet deep, one of the few home-team highlights in a 5-2 loss to the Milwaukee Brewers on Monday night.
Only a few feet away, occupying the first row of the first section on the left-hand side, stood 12 men in blue T-shirts that spelled "MANNYWOOD 2.0" in big white letters.
Machado noticed them.
"That's pretty cool," he said, "I'm not going to lie."

First impressions of the Manny Machado-infused Dodgers
MILWAUKEE -- The Manny Machado watch has ended, and we now know that the gem of this year's trade deadline market will be calling Chavez Ravine home, at least for the next few months. Springing into fashion is the No. 8 Dodgers jersey, last worn by Shane Victorino in 2012. Headed for the clearance rack is Machado's No. 13 Baltimore Orioles jersey, which may never again be as lucky for that franchise as it has been since Machado broke into the big leagues.
To begin Machado's L.A. career, the Dodgers took two of three on the road from the Milwaukee Brewers, capped by an 11-2 rout on Sunday. From there, the Dodgers headed out for three games in Philadelphia, followed by four in Atlanta. The hope is that by the time Machado makes his L.A. home debut on July 30 against Milwaukee, he'll be a true-blue Dodger.

Dodgers 3B Manny Machado chose No. 8 for Lakers legend Kobe Bryant - Silver Screen and Roll
The hold Lakers legend Kobe Bryant has over the city of Los Angeles continues, as Manny Machado showed his re24pect with his Dodgers jersey number.
In just a single month, the Los Angeles Lakers added LeBron James — only one of the sport’s absolute all-time greats — and the Los Angeles Dodgers added Manny Machado — only one of his sport’s most exciting, young talents. Not a bad month at all for those who root for the city’s only real basketball and baseball teams.
Friday afternoon, Machado held his introductory press conference and spoke very highly of what it means to add to the city’s incredible history and current collection of stars.
(Quick Note: The amount of star-power Los Angeles currently offers is absolutely insane. James and Machado, plus Zlatan Ibrahimović, Todd Gurley, Aaron Donald, Candace Parker, Clayton Kershaw, that Magic Johnson guy who ties a lot of this together and I’m sure I’m forgetting others. Such an exciting time for L.A. sports)
Machado was asked why he went with number eight for his jersey and had an answer that should endear him to Lakers fans everywhere (via Alanna Rizzo of Spectrum SportsNetLA):
Manny Machado said he is switching to No. 8 to signify a new beginning. Also, to reference Kobe Bryant. “Who doesn’t love Kobe?” he asked.

Manny Machado joins Los Angeles Dodgers with goal of winning World Series
MILWAUKEE -- If the All-Star break is a transformative experience for some, perhaps that has never been so literal than it was for Manny Machado, who entered the break as an Oriole and exited it a Dodger.
Machado joined his new club Friday in Milwaukee, where the Dodgers opened a three-game weekend series against the Brewers with a 6-4 victory. He singled in his first at-bat and went 2-for-3 with two walks a couple of hours after addressing the media for the first time in his new blue L.A. threads.
"I'm relieved," Machado said. "Relieved it finally got done. It's exciting to be here. It's a great group, great organization, with a lot of baseball history. I'll just come here and be myself and try to fit into the club around here."
After the game, Dodgers manager Dave Roberts said Machado fit in just fine. Maybe better than fine.
