Is the NHS's long-term plan workable? - BBC News
Bleak picture
Budgets for public health (including prevention) and training of nurses, doctors and other staff have not yet been set out and, if less generous than the NHS settlement, they could affect the ability of the service to deliver the long-term plan, in the view of the report authors.

And what of the short term? The watchdog paints a bleak picture.

The financial health of some trusts, it says, is getting worse.

NHS workforce 'at crunch point' - BBC News
The UK's medical profession is at a "crunch point", facing the prospect of too few doctors to treat rising numbers of patients, the regulator says.

The General Medical Council says the supply of medics has failed to keep up with demand and warns against the over-reliance on overseas staff post-Brexit.

The GMC's Charlie Massey called it a "crucial moment" for UK healthcare.

It comes despite government promises in England to increase the number of doctors in training.

Portsmouth hospital missed lung cancer cases - BBC News
A hospital failed to spot cases of lung cancer because it did not check patients' chest X-rays properly, the Care Quality Commission has found.
The health watchdog found that three patients at Queen Alexandra Hospital in Portsmouth suffered "significant harm".
It emerged that junior doctors complained they had been asked to carry out specialist radiology work without the appropriate training.
The CQC has now launched a review of NHS radiology services in England.
All NHS bodies have been instructed to provide details about their backlogs, turnaround times, staffing and arrangements for routine reporting of images.

NHS Budget plan not enough, say bosses - BBC News
NHS Bosses Simon Stevens and Health Improvement have asked for 4bn more each year to meet targets again // Traditionally the health budget has got an extra 4% a year above inflation to help it cope with the ageing population and cost of new drugs and treatments.
Since 2010 that figure has dropped to close to 1% - and this extra money does little to improve that.
Those working in accident and emergency units point out that the £350m for this winter could easily be swallowed up by spending on agency staff.
It is why staff on the front line are still predicting rising waiting times for treatment.

Jeremy Hunt's GP recruitment pledge in tatters as 1,000 full-time NHS doctors quit last year | The Independent
Despite £20,000 incentives to attract trainees and attempts to hold on to senior staff, the NHS is now 1,200 GPs further away from its target of recruiting an extra 5,000 GPs by 2020 than when it was first set by Health Secretary Jeremy Hunt in September 2015.

The Department of Health baseline at that time was 34,592 full-time GPs, but two years on the September 2017 figures show overall numbers stand at 33,302. &! https://www.thesun.co.uk/news/4969314/nhs-workforce-crisis-sees-1600-gps-quit-since-since-health-bosses-pledged-to-tackle-shortages/

GP practices receive less than 7% of NHS spending - Evening Express
Overall NHS operating costs rose by 4.1% in cash terms to almost £11.7 billion in 2016-17 – with £800 million, or 6.8% of the budget, going towards the running of Scotland’s 963 GP practices.

The Scottish government has pledged to increase funding for GP services to reach 11% of the NHS budget by 2021 amid concerns over the future of the service.

The Royal College of General Practitioners (Scotland) has predicted the country could face shortfall of more than 850 GPs by 2021.

NHS staff 'working on edge of safety' - BBC News
NHS staff in England are working on the "edge of safety" as rising demand is outstripping the increasing numbers being employed, health bosses say.
There are now 6% more staff than there were three years ago, but demand for services has risen by three times as much in some areas.
NHS Providers, which represents health chiefs, said staff shortages was now the number one concern in the NHS.

Psychiatrist vacancies 'double in four years' in England - BBC News
Attracting students
Prof Burn said the rise in vacancies was down to the difficulty in recruiting psychiatrists.
At the same time, more posts were being created for consultant psychiatrists as mental illness moved up the health agenda, but there were no specialists to fill them, she said.
She said medical schools need to broaden their pool of applicants in order to get more psychiatrists into the workplace.
"We are keen that medical schools should take in people studying psychology A-level - because they will be more likely to end up as psychiatrists."
It takes 13 years to train as a consultant psychiatrist.

Thanks but no thanks, CareRooms. In the NHS we need staff, not beds | Rachel Clarke | Opinion | The Guardian
Trained staff – carers – are what the sector lacks, not physical spaces in buildings. Urgent investment in trained, regulated carers is the only safe way to address this, not outsourcing the problem to random homeowners with no clearly defined standards for safeguarding, clinical governance and infection control, not to mention other risks to patients who are at their most vulnerable.
