Rec: Enemy States
Summary: I’m so sick of hearing about the war. It’s everywhere and you’re not.

“How’s Tuvi, Jake?” they say. “I haven’t heard from him,” is my refrain.

Review: Holy mother of god, Karin Lowachee writes war and it’s consequences well. This short story is from the PoV of someone waiting for their partner/lover, however you want to define it, to come back from a war somewhere out in space. It starts with their first meeting and goes from there.

Lowachee also wrote the Warchild series, which has not been recced at tsp apparently (travesty! I will attempt to rectify this), and just like with Warchild she’s not afraid to pull her punches here.

My favourite thing about this fic is the language. About 90% of the sentences here had me going “oh that is pretty.” I want to quote every single one of them but the last line…Jesus, the last line:

Tell me a story and begin it with I love you.

Rec: The Heathen Queen
Summary: A princess, sheltered all her life and valued for her purity, finds herself traded to a warrior queen in exchange for peace in her kingdom.

Review: A fairly standard “marriage of convenience” story, it still manages to be both sweet and hot, a really enjoyable short read. It’s nice that their eventual intimacy comes from a place of mutual trust instead of any kind of ‘ownership’ on Odessa’s part.

Rec: Second Chance
Summary: After going through some rough years, Anthony now has a job and a home, is applying to college, and still has time to volunteer at an inner city school. It’s a dream come true, except he still doesn’t know how to reveal his feelings to the man he loves.

Review: Anthony is a pretty great character as someone whose intelligence and history you can sense, and whose situation is simultaneously interesting (from an outsider’s perspective). Vsentyabre does a good job of making the reader step into his shoes, especially regarding the racial issues brought up, allowing it to drive the story forward. The romance between him and Yale is a rather soothing balm, Yale’s awkwardness and Anthony’s semi-hero worship butting heads to make their lives difficult. Be sure to check out the S2B2 version for the art–Vsentyabre is a good artist.

Summary: Intrepid author T.Spoon has come out with another collection of stories long and short, this time exploring the meaning of revolution. From rebellions to life-changing events to coming round full circle where nothing has changed at all, it’s about the choices we make and the choices we can live with.

Rec: Fred and Ginger
Summary: Patisserie Chef Christopher Miller is looking forward to Christmas alone, then his boss calls him with a last minute order—the order of his dreams. Just as he is about to make the delivery Chris’s world turned upside down by an explosive, fateful meeting with Fred, a chocolate Labrador. The dog’s owner turns out to be Robin Summers, a 1 night stand from months before, a man Chris could not forget.

Review: Well, let’s see – there’s a novelty erotic bakery, penis cupcakes, a chocolate lab, and a ginger hottie. Maybe the author was hungry when she wrote this? The story is as sweet and fluffy as meringue, with a salty sense of humor, and a very satisfying sex scene.

Also, I learned something new about egg whites.

Rec: Like It Is In The Movies
Summary: Owen spends most of his time daydreaming that he and his co-worker, Sandy, are going to have a passionate romance like the ones he’s seen in movies. But Sandy’s life is less than storybook, and their first encounter isn’t quite what Owen had imagined.

Review: Owen the narrator is awkward and shy to Sandy’s smooth and sexy, and they make a great pair together. It’s a really hot “first time” kind of story, with a few hints at something deeper going on behind the scenes. The first part of the story is a little rough, but it really picks up in the second half, rocketing you all the way to the finish.

Summary: Noah breaks everything he touches.

Review: This is a nice and sad story that you shouldn’t read if you’re not feeling well because it won’t help you feel better (as the warnings show). It might also gross you out if you’re sick and tired of the bury-your-gays trope. But if you’re in for short, tragic stories, this is for you!

Rec: you could make a life
Summary: “I think you’re my new best friend,” Dan says, excitement beating out common sense, social filters, the need to play it cool.

“Hello Dan Riley,” Marc says, his mouth twitching. “It is nice to meet you, new best friend.”

Review: So this is a series of sports fics centered on Dan and Marc, two kids drafted by the Toronto Maple Leafs–an NHL team from, you guessed it, Toronto. Not gonna lie, this fic does use a moderate amount of hockey lingo, but if you can ignore technical details for the storyline then you’ll be all right. Or, y'know, if you’re into hockey.

I like it precisely because it’s a hockey fic with all the technical detail that entails. Marc is kind of a snobby Quebecois asshole while Dan is at times a dickhead by accident but at the end of the day they’re both dudes who just want to play hockey (and win at it too). The series deals primarily with the relationship between Dan and Marc but as it’s from Dan’s PoV, you also get Dan’s relationship with his family, his worries about being bumped down to the minor league, his freakout about being a gay professional athlete. Which is great cos I love it when characters have more going on in their lives than just the Love Interest. Over all, the side characters are lively, the prose is well written and not overwhelming with descriptions, and the dialogue is easy to follow.

Sure, the tropes this fic explore isn’t anything new and exciting nor is it subversive but it is a fun read. And given how few good hockey fics there are in original slash, I’m really happy about this one.

Rec: You Give Me Butterflies
Summary: “I probably have a condition.”

“Yeah,” Nia said. “Lovesickness. That’s your condition.”

Or, Mei is a regular girl who gets a funny feeling in her stomach around the person she likes. The rest isn’t so regular.

Review: If it wasn’t obvious from the summary, this is a SUPER CUTE fic! It is an absolutely adorable fic about Mei and how she navigates her utter crush on another girl. Mei’s butterflies are literally that–butterflies, and one particular meeting between Mei and her crush creates so many butterflies that it gets plastered all over the news! (Luckily, Mei doesn’t get caught). And of course, Mei eventually gets together with her crush :)

Summary: A malfunctioning speech-therapy bot goes in for repairs. His mechanic finds that this bot’s highly specialised mouth– and his sensory processor– have been put to a lot of uses that aren’t in the instruction manual.

Review: Definitely a lot of fun. Lucas is flirty and cute and the perfect foil for the narrator, who can be kind of a jerk. Together their chemistry is electric and you finish the story just knowing that wouldn’t be the last time they experimented with Lucas’ sensory capabilities.

Rec: Firebird
Summary: Author’s summary - an adaptation of the fairytale Ivan and the Wolf. Ivan’s father sends him on a quest for the fabled phoenix…but the completion of his quest is only the beginning of his troubles.

Review: I particularly enjoyed this version of Ivan and the Wolf because of the banter and developing relationship between the ever droll wolf and Prince Ivan. As the author’s summary says, the story goes beyond Prince Ivan finding and returning with the firebird and there is a delightful epilogue which reunites us with the cast of characters several years later. This story is a perfect pick-me-up at the end of a long, frustrating day.

If Three Score and Ten is a new author to any readers here, I heartily recommend the other stories posted on FictionPress.

Rec: Usual time, usual place
Summary: “Why, hello there, citizen that I have never met before,” Wondrous Gent said as he carefully placed Miles down. Miles tried to take deep breaths to cut off the quickly escalating feeling of panic inside his chest.

“Are you all right?” Wondrous Gent said, looking very concerned. “I ask only since we have never met before and I would therefore have no reason to know if this quick breathing verging on hyperventilation is normal for you or not.”

Miles rolled his eyes, his panic marginally receding in the face of such sheer boneheadedness. “Seriously? I know who you are, Mark Brent, as you come into my store every day. Like I can’t recognize you without glasses?”

Review: My superhero knowledge is cobbled together from seeing it in popular media–but even that is enough to have fun seeing all the superman references. And even without that, hadn’t you wondered why people in those stories could never see through some superhero’s disguise? This fic is light footed and very fun to read.

Review: I love fairy tales and the golden bird happens to be one of my favorites. So to find a slashed version makes me very happy. This is a light hearted read and not written as a ‘serious’ fiction, but for me it was very nice.

Summary: College journalists find lust in dark spaces.

Review: This is so so much better then the summary makes sound. It’s well written with very few grammatical mistakes. Good character development for the mc, Jeremy, though Bryan was a little one dimensional. And although there is alot of sex somehow this still sort strikes me as fluff. Rec: Orion's New Leash on Life
Summary: The US Recession of 2007 stole Orion Hathaway’s job, his property value, and his savings. With nothing left, he lost something even more important: his mental health. No longer able to afford the fees to his favorite BDSM club, he becomes a hermit, retreating further into depression and the cocoon of his bed until his friends stage an intervention. They have the perfect solution to get Master O back on his feet. Despite his initial reservations, Orion discovers canine therapy might be just what he needs to become human again.

Roan Matthews is used to flaky Masters weirded out by his pup fetish. Deep down, he desires what all dogs want— a forever home. Unwilling participant Orion Hathaway seems an unlikely candidate at first, but Roan realizes if he can help pull Orion out of his depression, perhaps they can make a new home together.

Review: There is no other way to describe this story other than adorable! The author does a great job of hitting on the realities of depression with the character of Orion. And there is no way to avoid falling in love with Roan’s pup side, Pepper. This is a great read for anyone looking for a feel good romance story. And as someone who has never been actively interested in puppy play, this was a wonderful first read.

Rec: Wrong Side of the Bridge
Summary: A river cuts through the city and divides the youth scene: drug-free straight-edge hardcore on one side, drug- and vice-ridden punk on the other. Attempts to combine the two inevitably result in a fight.

Elijah Court is as straight-edge as it’s possible to get. His life is simple: university, tattooing, hanging out with his friend’s band. Falling for a chain-smoking skinhead from the other scene is not part of the plan - especially not when things start heating up with his best friend Pete.

Damien is everything Elijah isn’t – bold, aggressive, wild and out of the closet. He loves to fight and he loves to bring guys to their knees. He sees shy Elijah as the perfect challenge.

Damien is confident he can win Elijah over, regardless of Pete. But as he gets to know Elijah he begins to suspect he won’t be able to keep him as just another notch on the bedpost.

They’re so wrong for each other and their friends can’t even talk without starting a fight. Yet whenever they’re together it feels so right.

Can there ever be a future in falling for a boy from the wrong side of the bridge?

Review: These characters feel real. Damien’s crude, rude and violent. He’s flawed but he’s so himself that it’s sort of appealing. Reading about the whole straight edge culture was very interesting too. I learned something new.

Sam had always thought he was straight but now can’t help but notice the cute little nerd and, well, if anyone’s going to be putting marks on him it will damn well be him!
