Trump mistakenly refers to shooting in Toledo | TheHill 080519
President Trump on Monday misstated the location of one of two mass shootings that occurred over the weekend during a speech condemning the violence, referring to Toledo, Ohio, instead of Dayton, Ohio. "May God bless the memory of those who perished in Toledo, may God protect them. May God protect all of those from Texas to Ohio. May God bless the victims and their families," Trump said from the White House.

Is social media destroying democracy? Are Russian propaganda or "Fake news" entrepreneurs on Facebook undermining our sense of a shared reality? A conventional wisdom has emerged since the election of Donald Trump in 2016 that new technologies and their manipulation by foreign actors played a decisive role in his victory and are responsible for the sense of a "post-truth" moment in which disinformation and propaganda thrives.
Network Propaganda challenges that received wisdom through the most comprehensive study yet published on media coverage of American presidential politics from the start of the election cycle in April 2015 to the one year anniversary of the Trump presidency. Analysing millions of news stories together with Twitter and Facebook shares, broadcast television and YouTube, the book provides a comprehensive overview of the architecture of contemporary American political communications. Through data analysis and detailed qualitative case studies of coverage of immigration, Clinton scandals, and the Trump Russia investigation, the book finds that the right-wing media ecosystem operates fundamentally differently than the rest of the media environment.
The authors argue that longstanding institutional, political, and cultural patterns in American politics interacted with technological change since the 1970s to create a propaganda feedback loop in American conservative media. This dynamic has marginalized centre-right media and politicians, radicalized the right wing ecosystem, and rendered it susceptible to propaganda efforts, foreign and domestic. For readers outside the United States, the book offers a new perspective and methods for diagnosing the sources of, and potential solutions for, the perceived global crisis of democratic politics.

POLITICO Playbook PM: Pelosi’s SOTU guests, Trump’s pre-speech message and who Elizabeth Warren dined with - POLITICO 020519
CLIMATE FILES -- “Climate Change Could Leave Thousands of Lakes Ice-Free,” by NYT’s Nadja Popovich: “In a study published last week in the journal Nature Climate Change, scientists for the first time quantified the effects of rising temperatures on ice cover across 1.4 million lakes in the Northern Hemisphere.
“They found that, from Wisconsin to Japan, thousands of lakes that used to freeze reliably every winter already see some years without ice, and that ‘an extensive loss of lake ice will occur within the next generation.’ The vanishing ice will affect cold-water ecosystems and be felt by millions of people who live near northern lakes, the study said.” NYT

Trump surprised by response from women in white during State of the Union address – video | Global | The Guardian 020519
A record number of female House members were present for Donald Trump's second State of the Union address on Tuesday night. Many, including the speaker, Nancy Pelosi, and Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, dressed in white in tribute to the women's suffrage movement. Trump obviously wasn't expected the dancing and laughter that broke out among the mainly Democratic members when he talked about record levels of female employment in the US economy. 'No one has benefited more from our thriving economy than women who have filled 58% of the newly created jobs last year,' Trump said before the large group of women stood up and cheered. 'You weren't supposed to do that,' Trump joked before pointing out that the midterms had seen the largest number of women elected to Congress.

SOTU: Why the Women Wore White - The Atlantic 020619
Megan Garber: And then they did something else: They rose to their feet, first a few of them, and then several, and finally all of them, a body of white against a sea of dark suits, the women laughing, cheering, clapping, and pointing to themselves—reveling in the irony that their presence in the Congressional chamber was one thing a boast-prone president really was responsible for: Many of the women, indeed, had ended up in their new jobs—running for Congress, and winning—precisely as a reaction to the presidency and policies of Donald Trump. | It was that most unexpected of moments in a State of the Union event that was otherwise dully divisive: unscripted, human, fun. The rote inertias of party politics colliding with the brief delights of, simply, a party. But the scene that erupted in the House chamber on Tuesday was also a moment of reclamation: You weren’t supposed to do that, done nonetheless. Here was a line in a speech that, like most of the president’s lines, was meant to be about him; and here was a group of women, dressed in the outfits of suffrage, insisting that it was, in fact, about them.

Autocracy: Rules for Survival | by Masha Gessen | NYR Daily | The New York Review of Books 111016
Masha Gessen: One of the falsehoods in the Clinton speech was the implied equivalency between civil resistance and insurgency. This is an autocrat’s favorite con, the explanation for the violent suppression of peaceful protests the world over.
The second falsehood is the pretense that America is starting from scratch and its president-elect is a tabula rasa. Or we are: “we owe him an open mind.” It was as though Donald Trump had not, in the course of his campaign, promised to deport US citizens, promised to create a system of surveillance targeted specifically at Muslim Americans, promised to build a wall on the border with Mexico, advocated war crimes, endorsed torture, and repeatedly threatened to jail Hillary Clinton herself. It was as though those statements and many more could be written off as so much campaign hyperbole and now that the campaign was over, Trump would be eager to become a regular, rule-abiding politician of the pre-Trump era.

Masha Gessen on the "Impulse to Normalize" | On the Media | WNYC 120616
The journalist Masha Gessen recently wrote a piece called "Autocracy: Rules for Survival" in the New York Review of Books. Rule #1 is: "Believe the Autocrat. He means what he says." But when a leader makes false tatements or contradicts himself, how should he be covered?
Gessen warns that in the Trump era there will be an impulse to normalize, causing coverage and thinking to drift in a Trumpian direction. She saw that drift when she returned to post-Soviet Russia after years of living in the United States, and noticed that even the way certain words were used had become constrained. She talks to Brooke about how the press need to bridge the gap between reporting the facts and telling the truth, and how historical lessons offer a way forward for covering Trump.

POLITICO Playbook 071818: A thought exercise: What could Mueller find to satisfy expectations and top what we know? - POLITICO
BY HISTORICAL STANDARDS, ROBERT MUELLER has already been so successful in delivering prominent scalps that in a different context, his work product would be unassailable, and PRESIDENT DONALD TRUMP would likely be considered in immediate mortal political danger, so toxic that it would be impossible to do business with him.
-- INDICTED the president’s former campaign manager Paul Manafort -- who is currently behind bars and is soon going to trial for a host of federal charges, including tax and bank fraud.
-- SECURED the guilty pleas of former foreign policy adviser George Papadopoulos, the president’s first national security adviser Michael Flynn and former Trump deputy campaign manager Rick Gates. Alex van der Zwaan also pleaded guilty for lying to federal investigators. And, Richard Pinedo pleaded guilty to using stolen identities to create bank accounts.
-- CHARGED 13 RUSSIAN nationals and three Russian companies in February with interfering with the 2016 presidential election and trying to aide Trump’s campaign.
-- INDICTED 12 RUSSIAN intelligence officials, unraveling a massive cyber campaign to influence the 2016 election. “Those GRU officers, I’ve already seen the intelligence, they were the people that conducted this cyberattack on our elections,” Speaker Paul Ryan said matter-of-factly Tuesday.
SEPARATELY, prosecutors have indicted a Russian woman on charges she was acting as an agent for Putin’s government, cultivating relations around Washington and working with the NRA.
-- RUTHLESSLY ATTACKED the Mueller probe, terming it a tainted operation and falsely saying it is being run by partisan Democrats. Mueller has kept quiet through a yearlong attack on his integrity.
-- WENT INTO A ROOM alone with Vladimir Putin, a man who Republicans and Democrats agree has nothing in common with U.S. interests. He had no aides or advisers and just one interpreter. He said the meeting went well and it’s the news media’s fault that it’s being misjudged.
-- STOOD NEXT TO THE STRONGMAN LEADER OF RUSSIA and equated his word to that of his own director of national intelligence, and seemed to side with Putin because he was “extremely strong and powerful in his denial” that he meddled in the 2016 election. Trump said he had no reason to think they involved themselves in the election.
-- LATER SPOKE FROM THE WHITE HOUSE and said this: “In a key sentence in my remarks, I said the word ‘would’ instead of ‘wouldn’t.’ The sentence should have been: I don’t see any reason why I wouldn’t -- or why it wouldn’t be Russia. So just to repeat it, I said the word ‘would’ instead of ‘wouldn’t.’” This walk-back ran contrary to everything else Trump said in two television interviews and the rest of his news conference with Putin.
THE THOUGHT EXERCISE … The volume has been turned to max for so long in our political culture, what could Mueller unveil that would shock our sensibilities, transcend partisanship, silence the GOP and satisfy the inflated expectations of Democrats?
BY THE WAY … IF PAST IS PRECEDENT … This whole walk-back episode will be undone when Trump doesn’t get the results he wants and then walks back the walk-back. Someone on his staff seems sure to get the blame.

For Melania Trump, fashion diplomacy was defined by a hat - The Washington Post
PULITZER PRIZE WINNING WAPO FASHION CRITIC ROBIN GIVHAN on MELANIA’S HAT: “The day began with a hat. It ended with the hat, too. Not literally, but nostalgically. Over the course of 12 hours, no Cézanne at the National Gallery, no forest of cherry blossom branches, no Clinton or Bush china, no goat cheese gâteau, not even Chanel haute couture could compare to that magnificent halo of pure white light perched atop first lady Melania Trump’s perfectly groomed head. Nothing else mattered. There was nothing else.
“That hat, broad-brimmed with a high, blocked crown, announced the first lady’s presence as boldly and theatrically as a brigade of trumpeters. It was the bright white hat of a gladiator worn on an overcast day, a kind of glamorous public shield when sunglasses would not do at all.
“That hat was a force field that kept folks, the wrong folks, from getting too close. It was a diva crown. A grand gesture of independence. A church hat. The Lord is my shepherd. Deliver us from evil. Amen.”

Top 5 Alternative Energy ETFs for 2018 | Investopedia 122917
The alternative energy space has not been as lucrative as environmentally-conscious investors would like. And with the Trump administration promoting legislation that would cut resources for alternative energy, the immediate future for the sector could be turbulent. However, those interested in gaining some exposure to this potentially profitable market can diversify across several companies by buying alternative energy exchange-traded funds. (See also: Alternative Energy ETFs Drop to Key Support.)
The potential for this sector is very large due to growing awareness about global warming and the depletion of oil reserves over time. In addition, with oil prices expected to keep rising, alternative energy is becoming more attractive to many consumers. This can boost the bottom lines of alternative energy companies.
We selected five alternative energy ETFs based on market cap, liquidity and year-to-date returns. All performance figures are current as of December 28, 2017.
