Earth Rights Institute
"Earth Rights Institute (ERI) is designed to be an equilateral knowledge platform, where local people collaborate with academics and development professionals, both local and foreign, by exchanging skills, experiences, and knowledge to solve crucial development issues such as widespread poverty, land right disputes and environmental degradation.

ERI takes an innovative approach to join education, advocacy and research in building ecologically, economically and culturally sustainable communities in some of the world's poorest communities. ERI advocates a model of development that supports the re-localization of development expertise. We believe that in order to empower communities to manage and direct their own development, strategies and expert knowledge must be conceived locally.

We are affiliated with the IU as a United Nations NGO (Non-Governmental Organization) for these UN Departments

- ECOSOC (Economic and Social Council)
- UN Habitat
- UNCSD (United Nations Commission on Sustainable Development)
- UN Finance and Development

[...] offer online courses: 'Become a Leader in Sustainable Development' and 'Course on Land Rights, Land Value Taxation and Commons Rent'"

KBpedia - Open-source Integrated Knowledge Structure
"KBpedia is a comprehensive knowledge structure for promoting data interoperability and knowledge-based artificial intelligence, or KBAI. The KBpedia knowledge structure combines seven 'core' public knowledge bases — Wikipedia, Wikidata,, DBpedia, GeoNames, OpenCyc, and UMBEL — into an integrated whole. KBpedia's upper structure, or knowledge graph, is the KBpedia Knowledge Ontology."

Isaac Asimov: Becoming Educated | Design Luck
If there is one thing we can conclusively say about Isaac Asimov, it’s that he could write. His body of work extends to over 500 books, many that he edited and quite a few that he penned. To add to that, he was never bound to a specific domain.

Designing better file organization around tags, not hierarchies
Excerpts from introduction:
"Computer users organize their files into folders because that is the primary tool offered by operating systems. But applying this standard hierarchical model to my own files, I began to notice shortcomings of this paradigm over the years. At the same time, I used some other information systems not based on hierarchical path names, and they turned out to solve a number of problems. I propose a new way of organizing files based on tagging, and describe the features and consequences of this method in detail.

Speaking personally, I’m fed up with HFSes, on Windows, Linux, and online storage alike. I struggled with file organization for just over a decade before finally writing this article to describe problems and solutions. Life would be easier if I could tolerate the limitations of hierarchical organization, or at least if the new proposal can fit on top of existing HFSes. But fundamentally, there is a mismatch between the narrowness of hierarchies and the rich structure of human knowledge, and the proposed system will not presuppose the features of HFSes.
existing alternative systems like Git and Danbooru bypass HFS problems to deliver a better user experience. Then I describe a step-by-step model, starting from basic primitives, of a proposed file organization system that includes a number of desirable features by design.
I care most about the data model and less about implementation details. For example in HFSes, I focus on the fact that the file system consists of a tree of labeled edges with file content at the leaves; I ignore details about inodes, journaling, defragmentation, permissions, etc."

Stripe Home
Under the hood, Home is built on the same technology as our user-facing products (such as the Dashboard) because we wanted to make it easy to move between developing user-facing and internally-facing products. This has made Home a favorite for new Stripes’ spin-up projects and a popular go-to for Hackathon projects. The search feature described was built by a new class of Stripes as their very first project and office pages were built at our most recent hackathon.

Home is such an important part of how we work together and stay connected; it remains a work in progress along with Stripe as a whole. We’re still figuring out how to balance transparency with information overload, serendipity with curated content, and crisp interfaces and team boundaries with the actual human part that makes the company what it is. Our next projects are all about evolving knowledge discovery: from team pages that weave the individuals, metrics, and our users together to a better way to browse and publish information.

calibre - E-book management
"It can view, convert, edit and catalog e-books in all of the major e-book formats. It can also talk to e-book reader devices. It can go out to the internet and fetch metadata for your books. It can download newspapers and convert them into e-books for convenient reading."

GUI with regex search but also can be used by CLI.

A lighter alternative (which is also written in Python) is 'Ebook Viewer' (

It is cross platform, running on Linux, Windows and macOS. For Android there exists the paid app 'Calibre Companion' ( which can sync to library on desktop. There's a simple alternative E-Book (epub) reader for Android called 'Document Viewer' ( yet that one can't sync.

Recoll text search finds your documents
"Desktop search tool that provides efficient full text search (from single-word to arbitrarily complex boolean searches).
Recoll was designed not to require a permanent daemon but on Linux systems it can make use of inotify. Recoll updates its index at designed intervals (for example through Cron tasks) but if desired, the indexing task can run as a file-system monitoring daemon for real-time index updates."

Scope exmple:
Recoll will index an MS-Word document stored as an attachment to an e-mail message inside a Thunderbird folder archived in a Zip file.

Runs on Linux, macOS, MS Windows and Unix.

Farm Commons

We are all stronger when we work together. When farmers and attorneys share knowledge, the entire local food system moves forward. Farm Commons fosters the discussions and connections that build a strong legal backbone for our community.

Farmers should be empowered to take action on the legal situations that affect their operations. Our educational resources help farmers identify issues, break them down into manageable steps, and give farmers the confidence to move forward.

Ultimately, farmers need access to affordable, specialized attorneys. Farm Commons leads the edge of sustainable farm law through client representation, and develops the capacity of attorneys around the country to do the same."
