Adam Serwer: White Nationalism’s Deep American Roots - The Atlantic
A long-overdue excavation of the book that Hitler called his “bible,” and the man who wrote it
Robert bowers wanted everyone to know why he did it.
“I can’t sit by and watch my people get slaughtered,” he posted on the social-media network Gab shortly before allegedly entering the Tree of Life synagogue in Pittsburgh on October 27 and gunning down 11 worshippers. He “wanted all Jews to die,” he declared while he was being treated for his wounds. Invoking the specter of white Americans facing “genocide,” he singled out HIAS, a Jewish American refugee-support group, and accused it of bringing “invaders in that kill our people.” Then–Attorney General Jeff Sessions, announcing that Bowers would face federal charges, was unequivocal in his condemnation: “These alleged crimes are incomprehensibly evil and utterly repugnant to the values of this nation.”
The pogrom in Pittsburgh, occurring just days before the 80th anniversary of Kristallnacht, seemed fundamentally un-American to many. Sessions’s denunciation spoke to the reality that most Jews have found a welcome home in the United States. His message also echoed what has become an insistent refrain in the Donald Trump era. Americans want to believe that the surge in white-supremacist violence and recruitment—the march in Charlottesville, Virginia, where neo-Nazis chanted “Jews will not replace us”; the hate crimes whose perpetrators invoke the president’s name as a battle cry—has no roots in U.S. soil, that it is racist zealotry with a foreign pedigree and marginal allure.

Calling Out White Nationalist Bullies
I’ve always despised bullies.
Ever since I was a young boy I could see them clearly; on the playground and in the hallways and on the street corners—the way they terrorized people while being themselves internally terrified.
Even as they brutalized the other kids with words and fists, I heard the shaking of their voices and noticed their quivering hands, and I knew how petrified they were.
I almost pitied them.
I watched them prey upon those who were vulnerable or alone or different—not because these people posed any true threat to them, but because the violence provided a moment of escape from the voice in their heads that told them they were worthless and unloved and endangered. They could only find value if they had a space to own and impose their will on people within: a classroom, an alleyway, a neighborhood. They needed a domain to define themselves by.
Some of these grammar school bullies grew up. They eventually had words of love spoken into their ears or they tapped into their inherent humanity or they found a sense of worth outside of wounding other people.
Some weren’t so lucky.

My six years covering neo-Nazis: 'They're all vying for the affections of Russia' | Books | The Guardian
Vegas Tenold, author of Everything You Love Will Burn: Inside the Rebirth of White Nationalism in America, tells of his reporting on the far right
The Norwegian journalist Vegas Tenold started reporting on neo-Nazi and KKK rallies in 2011, six years before the violent clashes in Charlottesville, Virginia, that made the resurgence of white supremacist groups into an international news story.
Tenold’s new book, Everything You Love Will Burn: Inside the Rebirth of White Nationalism in America, excerpted here, chronicles the experience of those six years.
How did you introduce yourself while doing the reporting? How did you explain who you were, beyond just saying: ‘I’m a reporter?’
I always make a point of saying that I’m their enemy, in the sense that I’m a Norwegian socialist. In Norway, you can still vote socialist and it might still have some kind of impact. I tried to be disarming about it. That allowed me to fight with them, argue with them and push back because they know that I disagreed. I told them I was really interested in finding out what draws you guys to this scene. What makes you want to subscribe to this ideology and carry the vast social costs of being an out-and-out Nazi.

America's dark underbelly: I watched the rise of white nationalism | World news | The Guardian
Journalist Vegas Tenold spent six years among some of America’s most extreme white supremacists, and discovered a people who believe the white race is under threat and the enemy is everywhere
It was almost 3am, and Matthew Heimbach and I were sitting in an International House of Pancakes restaurant somewhere between Harrisburg, Pennsylvania, and Paoli, Indiana, when Matthew asked me why I never asked him about the Holocaust.
The question caught me by surprise, not because I was unaccustomed to Matthew talking about Jews – only a few hours earlier he had ranted about how Jews were behind tens of millions of aborted white babies – but because I didn’t know the answer to the question.
It was on the evening before the presidential election, and I had known Matthew for a few years, watching him gain steam as a nationalist leader in America and putting together the Nationalist Front, his ragtag coalition of white pride malcontents.
I had spent the past six years with members of the radical right in order to write a book that explains the resurgence of rightwing radical groups who march in the streets, whose beliefs are rooted in the flotsam of decades of American racism, antisemitism, and white supremacy.
Matthew’s vision was to bring the these groups together within a single political movement – and in the time I knew him he became one of the most significant far-right figures in the country.
His question about the Holocaust made me wonder if all the time we had spent together had dulled me in some ways or softened my journalistic instincts.

The neo-Nazi plot against America is much bigger than we realize | World news | The Guardian
The neo-Nazi plot against America is much bigger than we realize
Lt Christopher Hasson is the product of traditions in white supremacist circles, and experts say there are ‘thousands like him’
In the early summer of 2017, US coast guard lieutenant Christopher Hasson had an idea. He had been trying to figure out an effective way of killing billions of people – “almost every last person on Earth” – but found himself coming up against the daunting logistics of such a task.
He suspected “a plague would be most successful”, but didn’t know how to get his hands on enough Spanish flu, botulism or anthrax. His idea, he wrote in a draft email from 2 June of that year, would be to “start with biological attacks followed by attack on food supply”. He acknowledged the plan needed more research.
While horrifying in their ambition, Hasson’s plans, gleaned from email drafts, are scatterbrained and bear the hallmarks of a person still trying to figure things out. His tentative plans, outlined mostly in emails to himself, were thwarted when he was arrested last month on firearms and drugs charges and investigators discovered his inner life as a neo-Nazi and his plans for mass murder – along with a huge cache of weapons and a hit list of prominent Democrats and media figures.

Anonymous Message To Neo-Nazis And White Nationalists – Anonymous
This week, a horrible and senseless attack was carried out by an individual who strongly identifies as a white nationalist, and has called for further violence to advance his agenda, and the agenda of his partners in crime.
The attack in New Zealand shows that this is a global problem that we facing.
The attacker was hoping to spark a new civil war between people of different races and ethnicities, and he was using the media hype surrounding the so called culture war that has dominated western politics for the past several years.
The mainstream media plays a role in these terrorist attacks too, by putting flames on the fire of division between different political and cultural groups who were able to coexist with their differences not very long ago.
The intensity of coverage for fringe political beliefs have now given those beliefs power and helped with recruitment.

Black Panther and the myth of Kirby vs the KKK – Matt Kamen – Medium
Here are the actual facts:

Yes, Jack Kirby — along with writer Stan Lee — created Black Panther, who first appeared in the pages of Fantastic Four #52–54, in 1966.
However, Black Panther’s first solo stories were published in Jungle Action, starting in #6 in 1973. (Technically #5, though that was a reprint of a Panther-focused issue of The Avengers.)
The series was written by Don McGregor, and pencilled by Rich Buckler and Billy Graham.
Jungle Action, incidentally, saw the first appearance of Erik Killmonger, the antagonist of the Black Panther movie.
The comic was, at different points, edited by Roy Thomas and Marv Wolfman.
‘The Panther vs the Klan’ was a storyline, by McGregor and Graham, beginning in Jungle Action #19.
Jungle Action #21 featured this still-shocking cover:

Improbably, a Black activist is now the owner and leader of the "National Socialist Movement," which he is turning into an anti-racist group / Boing Boing
The National Socialist Movement is one of America's oldest and most influential Holocaust denial/neo-Nazi movements, proprietors of one of the world's most prominent Holocaust denial websites and defendants in a case over members who participated in racist violence at the Charlottesville "Unite the Right" rally.

James Hart Stern is a Black civil rights activist who has previously -- through very unlikely circumstance -- become head of a prominent KKK organization, which he took over in order to dissolve it. Stern was able to do this because he became a confidant of former Ku Klux Klan Grand Wizard Edgar Ray Killen while they were cellmates, while Killen was imprisoned for murder and Stern was imprisoned for mail fraud. Killen ended up giving Stern power of attorney, which Stern used to take over the Klan and shut it down.

Jeff Schoep was the longterm president of the NSM, credited with reinvigorating it and growing it. He became acquainted with Stern through Stern's connection to Killen. He claims that he sought Stern's advice on his legal exposure from the Unite the Right suits, and that Killem convinced him that he should sign over control of the NSM to him in order to protect himself, and that Stern tricked him into signing over control.

EXvangelicals #ExposeChristianSchools. Want to understand T***p base? Read these horror stories
Rising in response to a bout of insomnia early this morning, I got on the computer and found a trending topic on Twitter: #ExposeChristianSchools. What was this?
Seems that in response to criticism of his wife for teaching in a Christian school, vice-pr*sident Mike Pence tweeted:
Mike Pence✔ @mike_pence
We’ll let the critics roll off our back. But the criticism of Christian education in America must stop.
...because it’s not as if there’s a First Amendment or anything like that.
Remember Christopher Stroop, the Exvangelical movement leader I cited extensively in a diary about the movement a little while back? He responded.
Chris Stroop ✔ @C_Stroop
Hey fellow Christian school grads, let’s tell @VP and @DavidAFrench how traumatizing those bastions of bigotry are. Use the hashtag #ExposeChristianSchools
So they did, to the tune of 14,100 tweets as of 4:55 a.m. Eastern as I write.
It’s mind-blowing, horrific, sickening. And for me—an epiphany about why white evangelicals support T***p despite his frequent and obvious violations of what purport to be Christian values. They’ve formed a cult of T***p because they were raised in a cult. They support an abuser because they grew up with routine abuse of every imaginable kind at school. They cannot see through his lies because their education was lies, and extinguished critical thinking. They worship a hateful man because they were taught that secretly hating themselves and outwardly hating others was sacred.
I included a lot of tweets, won’t be at all surprised if people don’t read all of them, but even so could not begin to do justice to what the former students/victims have written.
These are the people who were intelligent, strong and independent-minded enough to get out, realize what they were in and seek healing. The people who are still trapped in the brainwashing aren’t tweeting here.
Trigger warning. This stuff is really tough to read.
