Henry Kissinger’s Mixed Record on Nuclear Arms Control
And yet Kissinger accomplished much. He and Nixon proved that strategic arms control was possible. They negotiated the ABM Treaty which allowed subsequent arms reduction efforts to eventually succeed. And Kissinger spoke our language when he sought the Vladivostok Accord and railed against those who argued that a nuclear war between superpowers could be fought and won

Christopher Serpell reviews ‘The White House Years’ by Henry Kissinger · LRB 20 December 1979
Two things: I've actually read this book and it's terrible beyond belief. Also, a shockingly sympathetic review for this venue.

The end of Atlanticism: has Trump killed the ideology that won the cold war? | News | The Guardian
"special relationship" - The foreign policy establishment has been lamenting its death for half a century. But Atlanticism has long been a convenient myth // Atlanticism has never had a very stable meaning. For one thing, the US and Europe have not always considered each other natural political partners. For most of American history, there hasn’t even been a unified “Europe” to partner with. [...] Advertisement

In 1973, Henry Kissinger, himself a transatlantic refugee, launched a “Year of Europe” tour to try to save the relationship in the name of containment, preventing the further growth of the Soviet Union. Speaking as Nixon’s national security adviser, he asked whether the Atlantic community could thrive as the memory of the second world war began to fade. As the “rigid divisions of the past two decades diminish, new assertions of national identity and national rivalry emerge”. He argued that Americans should continue to support European unity. “If we permit the Atlantic partnership to atrophy … we shall miss our historic opportunity for even greater achievement.”

War Without Reason
The idea that spirit and intuition need to be restored to a society that had become “overcivilized” and “overrationalized,” too dependent on logic, instruments, information, and mathematics, has a pedigree reaching back at least to the late 1800s.

Dr. Ruth, Dr. Kissinger, and Trump’s Cruelty to Families | The New Yorker
“The Evian Conference gave us no help,” Dr. Ruth said. “If not for the Kindertransport, I would not be here today. I hope something more comes from this conversation about the Syrian refugees than came from Evian.” At this point she was looking directly at Kissinger. Now I understood why Merkel had wanted her at the dinner. There wasn’t a trace of accusation in her voice—the whole time she’d been telling the story in the same half-apologetic tone—but no one, least of all Kissinger, could have missed her point: You and I were the same as each other, the same as the Syrians. I have not forgotten. Have you?
