Why Price Won't Stop People from Buying the iPhone Xs Max
The iPhone Xs Max is the most expensive iPhone ever made, with a starting price of $1,099. Its 6.5-inch display is the biggest on any iPhone. And its name is certainly the most ridiculous. This is, to be sure, a phone of extremes.
And yet, many of my friends say they'll be getting an iPhone Xs Max the first day it's available. I guess another superlative we need to apply to the iPhone Xs Max may be "most appealing to a certain type of customer."
Let's break down what makes the iPhone Xs Max such an interesting product.
A lack of differentiation
First, here's what the iPhone Xs Max isn't. Unlike the iPhone Plus models Apple released for the previous four years, the iPhone Xs Max doesn't offer anything the standard-size iPhone Xs lacks. The old Plus models had an extra camera with support for zoom modes and, in later models, Portrait Mode. Not the Max — it's got the same processor and cameras as the regular-size, $999 iPhone Xs.

The iPhone XS: An innovation dilemma | Macworld
Does the iPhone XS signify a slowdown in smartphone innovation?
In a financial conference call during the last year, Apple CEO Tim Cook described the iPhone X as setting up the next ten years of smartphones. It’s easy to see now what Cook meant by that: this week, the company updated all of its new iPhones to follow the design example set by the iPhone X.
But even as it unveiled the iPhone XS Max and the iPhone XR, the company ran into a struggle when it came to the iPhone X’s successor, the iPhone XS. How do you take what was formerly your most advanced iPhone and distinguish it from the rest of your now equally advanced line-up?
That’s one reason why during Apple’s event, about halfway through Apple’s description of the iPhone XS, I started to get a bit antsy and, much as I hate to admit it, a little bored. The more the company leaned on the impressive specs in the iPhone XS’s A12 Bionic chip, the more I started to suspect that it was because the bulk of the improvements in this new phone were in the kind of speed and capacity increases that aren’t necessarily obvious to most users.

Apple Event Notebook: iPhone - Six Colors
Here I am, emptying out the rest of my notebook from Wednesday’s Apple event at the Steve Jobs Theater. First up was my stuff about the Apple Watch Series 4; now it’s time for the main event, the iPhone itself.
For smart shoppers who love big phones
Statistic of the day: The iPhone XR costs $350 less than the iPhone XS Max to start. That is a wide gulf, and I think it’s purposeful on Apple’s part. The gap between those prices allows the iPhone XS Max to be very clearly defined as a high-end device; in a sense, the $1099 (and up!) price tag is a label of quality and distinction.
But for smart shoppers who love large phones, it’s hard to imagine that the iPhone XR won’t be a success. In fact, it may be just as well that the iPhone XR isn’t ready for sale just yet—because I suspect the people who order iPhones the moment they become available are far more likely to be buying the iPhone XS Max.
For a less casual iPhone user? The kind who wanders into an Apple Store in early December and looks at all the iPhones, only to realize they can buy into the iPhone X line and get a big phone, all for $250 less than the smaller iPhone XS? That’s an iPhone XR sale.

Apple Introduces New iPhones and Apple Watches | The Mac Security Blog
Today Apple introduced the latest models of the iPhone and Apple Watch at the Steve Jobs Theater on the new Apple campus. If you've been following the Mac news sites, you've seen much of what was announced; leaks made this event less surprising that it often is. This is an "s" year, when Apple iterates the latest model iPhone without any major new features. There are two new top-of-the-line iPhones and one inexpensive model, similar in many respects to the flagship iPhones Xs.
As for the Apple Watch, the update was more interesting. Some major new health-related features join new sizes for the device. A redesign of some of the watch faces means that you will have access to more information at a glance. A new gold stainless steel model adds a bit of class to the product line.
Here's what's new:
iPhone
Last year's new iPhone - the iPhone X - was a major change in the product's form factor. It now comes in three variants; the iPhone Xs, the iPhone Xs Max, and the iPhone Xr. The first two models continue last year's iPhone X lineage, while the Xr is a less expensive version. But don't write it off; for a couple hundred dollars less, you get most of the features of the more expensive models.

Harry McCracken makes sense of the iPhone lineup - Six Colors
Here’s a very nice piece from Harry McCracken (my longtime counterpart when he was editor of PCWorld) about the strange new iPhone lineup:
For all their similarities, the new phones don’t line up into a digestible good/better/best matrix. The cheapest model, the $749 XR, is the midrange model in terms of size and has a nifty twist—six different color options to choose from—which is unavailable on the XS and XS Max. But if you covet a bright-red iPhone in an intermediate size, you’ll have to decide whether the stuff the XR doesn’t have is an issue. And while some of what’s missing is obvious—the XR has only one rear camera—other omissions are somewhat arcane, like the fact it can withstand being submerged for 30 minutes in only one meter of water vs. two meters for the XS and XS Max.
Harry’s analysis seems dead on to me, including the fact that Apple’s all-in on large screens. (Motivated, I suspect, by its excellent knowledge of the desires of the global smartphone market.)

Thoughts and details on the just-announced iPhone Xs (Max) – The Sweet Setup
A screen and a camera. That’s the gist of an iPhone. On the front, you’ve got a screen. And on the back you’ve got a camera lens or two.
And today, at Apple’s “Gather Round” event, they announced the new iPhones Xs which, of course, have better screens and better cameras than before.
Yes, this is expected. But it’s also welcomed! I’ve had every iPhone since the first one in 2007, and it’s pretty much always been within arms reach (unless I leave it at home thanks to my Apple Watch with LTE, but that’s a story for another time).
We all use our iPhones every day (perhaps a bit too much, but let’s not go there), and that means we are looking at and tapping on that display all the time. And so, the better the display gets, the better our experience using these devices that we carry around in our pockets 24/7.

Hands-on with the new iPhone XS, iPhone XS Max, iPhone XR, and Apple Watch Series 4 | Macworld
It’s an iPhone X world, and we’re living in it.
Sure, there’s ample underground parking and free food, but the biggest attraction at any Apple media event is the chance to get your hands on new Apple products more than a week before they go on sale to the general public. I was there at Apple Park on Wednesday to see (and use) Apple’s latest iPhones and Apple Watch. Here’s what I learned.
iPhone X, everywhere
A year ago, Apple declared the iPhone X the future of the smartphone. From the perspective of September 2017, this is the future—and the biggest story out of Wednesday’s event is that all of Apple’s new iPhones are a part of the iPhone X family. Every single one of them has glass front and back, with edge-to-edge screens and Face ID. If you buy a 2018-model iPhone, you will be buying an iPhone X—and flipping up from the bottom of the screen with your thumb to unlock rather than pressing a home button.

DxOMark Launches Selfie Scores for Rating Front Camera Image Quality
DxOMark is known for rigorously testing the image quality of cameras and smartphones, but for smartphones, it had focused on the main rear-facing cameras. That has now changed with the launch of DxOMark’s new Selfie scores — it’s a new test protocol for determining the quality of front cameras.
“We have designed this protocol to do the same for front cameras as our well-established DxOMark Mobile protocol does for main cameras: offer neutral and reliable test data about smartphone front camera performance and image quality to consumers and other interested parties,” DxOMark says, noting that the protocol is based on the same procedures and methodologies as the standard Mobile (rear camera) score.
The DxOMark website has been updated to include smartphone Selfie scores in various areas. From the updated smartphone image quality leaderboard, we can see that Selfie score sometimes diverges quite a bit from the main Mobile score.

iPhone XS Smart Battery Case Review | iMore
The new iPhone XS, iPhone XS Max, and iPhone XR Smart Battery Cases are here. No, it's not a dream. It's not a drill. Apple has really made new iPhone Smart Battery Cases for the new iPhones. And... they may not be pretty, but they're pretty damn good.

Smart Battery Case: Previously...
I loved the previous Smart Battery Cases. Yes, they were ugly, yes they were expensive, but the technology inside it made them the most efficient cases on the market. They did so much more with so much less. Apple put function ahead of form and wow but did a lot of people lose their minds.
Here's why, from my earlier preview:
Instead of covering up the radios with non-RF transparent battery, Apple cut it away on the sides. Yeah, leaving the stuff of Dieter Ramm's worst design-is-how-it-works nightmares — a hump the likes of which you could never not see — but also something that not only didn't interfere with reception but actually included a passive antenna to boost reception. That way, rather than start screaming for signal, the radios could keep their chill and your phone could really get its charge on.
Also, iOS could understand the difference between the case and a plug, so the iPhone could stay in mobile mode. That way, none of the more power intensive and expensive processes spin up, all the chips could still race-to-sleep, and the charging could be as fast and efficient as possible.
Now, we have a new set of Smart Battery Cases — For iPhone XS, iPhone XS Max, and iPhone XR

The New Apple iPhone Battery Cases — MacSparky
Today Apple released battery cases (in black or white) for the iPhone XS, iPhone XS Max, and iPhone XR.
It has been a long time since I used a battery case on my iPhone. (I am pretty sure my last battery case fig my iPhone 3GS.) The reason I gave up on them is that when you get a new phone, the battery case is of no further use to you.

Apple releases official battery cases for iPhone XS, XS Max, and XR | Ars Technica
They closely resemble similar cases for prior iPhone models.
Today, Apple quietly began taking orders for battery-equipped cases for all three 2018 iPhone models—iPhone XS, iPhone XS Max, and iPhone XR. The value proposition and designs are essentially the same as with battery cases made by Apple for prior iPhones.
As pictured above, each phone gets a black and a white option. The cases are made of silicone and closely resemble the existing, not-battery-equipped silicone cases that began shipping with the phones first became available late last year, except for the significant bumps on the lower two thirds of the backs of each case. The bump houses the battery, of course. Since the three phones are each different sizes, these cases are not interchangeable between models.
These cases work with Qi wireless chargers, and you can charge both the case and the phone at the same time from said chargers—though it should probably be said that Qi speeds on iPhones are nothing to write home about, and that's a whole lot of lithium-ion battery to fill up. In many cases, you'll be better off going wired, and that's OK, because the cases support fast-charging from USB-PD compatible chargers.
With the iPhone XS case, Apple promises up to 33 hours of talk time, 21 hours of Internet use, or 25 hours of video playback. For the XS Max, it's up to 37 hours talk, 20 hours Internet, and 25 hours video playback.

Apple launches Smart Battery Case for iPhone XS, iPhone XS Max, and iPhone XR | iMore
Pick up your Apple-branded iPhone charging case right now!
For anyone that's been waiting for Apple's Smart Battery Case for the latest and greatest X series of iPhone, your wait is over. Apple just launched a new version for all three in the current model iPhone X line, that the iPhone XS, iPhone XS Max, and iPhone XR.
iPhone XS Smart Battery Case
iPhone XS Max Smart Battery Case
iPhone XR Smart Battery Case
It comes in just black or white, so your choices are limited, especially for iPhone XR owners that are proudly sporting those bright colors. The Smart Battery Case for iPhone 7 also came in (Product)Red, so it's possible we'll see a version for the iPhone X line in the future.
This is more than just an update to fit the latest iPhone. Apple took to heart all our cries of disgust at the Smart Battery Case's "humpback" design and smoothed it out to look like a more traditional battery case.

iPhone XR/XS/XS Max Apple battery cases appear - Six Colors
Apple has brought back the bulge. The company is now selling battery cases for the iPhone XR, XS, and XS Max models. These cases support Qi charging and it’s the first time Apple has made a battery case for larger phones. As Juli Clover at MacRumors reports:
Available in black or white, each Smart Battery Case is priced at $129 and is designed to add extra battery life to the iPhone. The cases are similar in design to the past battery case option Apple offered for the iPhone 7, with a bump at the back to house a battery pack.
If you desperately need more battery life out of your iPhone, these may be the cases to get. The previous models, released for the iPhone 6 and 7, were generally considered a cut above other battery cases because of secret software sauce added by Apple.

Apple Launches Smart Battery Cases for iPhone XS, XS Max, and XR – MacStories
Apple today updated its online store with the addition of three new products: Smart Battery Cases for the iPhone XS, XS Max, and XR. Every version of the case costs $129, regardless of iPhone size. Each new case is available in both Black and White, and the designs resemble that of the previous Apple Smart Battery Cases, with a silicone exterior and a large bulge on the back to accommodate the battery.
The Smart Battery Case is compatible with Qi chargers, so you can still take advantage of wireless charging while using the case. These are the quoted charge estimates for each case:
XS: 33 hours talk time, 21 hours Internet use, and 25 hours video playback
XS Max: 37 hours talk time, 20 hours Internet use, and 25 hours video playback
XR: 39 hours talk time, 22 hours Internet use, and 27 hours video playback
In the past, Apple hasn't made Smart Battery Cases available for Plus-sized phones, so it's great to see that now, regardless of your iPhone size, you can get a case that raises battery life to meet the needs of heavy use.
