The Debate Over Startups and Tipping Could Be Just Heating Up - Bloomberg
“Here’s what happened: Instacart guaranteed its workers $10 per delivery, but only made them whole after accounting for customers’ tips. DoorDash had a similar policy.

“The effect was that the more people tipped, the less the companies had to pay out. So customers who thought they were helping to supplement a delivery worker’s meager income were actually just tossing some extra money to their favorite startups’ corporate coffers. That surely helped the cash-bleeding companies’ bottom lines, but drivers protested, urging people to only tip in cash.”

Instacart changes tip policy after worker backlash • CNN
Sara Ashley O'Brien:

After mounting criticism from workers over its payment practices, Instacart has agreed to make some changes.

In a blog post on Wednesday, CEO Apoorva Mehta said the on-demand grocery delivery startup will no longer decrease the amount it contributes to worker base pay based on the size of their tips. He also said the company will reimburse workers who have been impacted by that practice.

"While our intention was to increase the guaranteed payment for small orders, we understand that the inclusion of tips as a part of this guarantee was misguided. We apologize for taking this approach," said Mehta.

Instacart, along with rival DoorDash, has been under fire in recent weeks from workers who say the tips added by customers on orders are being used to subsidize a minimum pay rate, instead of being used as bonuses.

After Scrutiny, Instacart Will End Its Controversial Tipping Policy
The policy, which attracted the ire of both its delivery workers and customers, meant Instacart used customer tips to subsidize the $10 per-delivery minimum base pay the company guarantees its workers, BuzzFeed News and other outlets reported earlier this week.

earn eighty cents an hour by delivering groceries with instacart! — Working Washington
The batch payment - the amount Instacart actually pays to the worker - is lowered because the consumer included an up-front tip. The company is actually using customers' tips to pay workers' wages. Instacart just pays the worker less to make up for it.

earn eighty cents an hour by delivering groceries with instacart! — Working Washington
“In case that email is as confusing to you as it looks to us, let us help you parse it: what Brie is saying is that because the customer left a high tip on this particular job, the ‘batch payment’ — the amount Instacart actually pays to the worker — was just 80 cents, including a mileage reimbursement.

“In other words, Instacart is now confirming what workers have been saying since the change in pay structure: that the company is actually using customers’ tips to pay workers’ wages. When a customer tips up-front, it doesn’t mean extra money for the worker. Instacart just pays the worker less to make up for it.

“That’s right: the customer’s tip doesn’t get added to the worker’s check — it just gets deducted from what Instacart pays. In other words, up-front tips go to Instacart, not to the worker.”

Instacart launches grocery pickup service in cities across the US - The Verge
“Instacart just announced that its new grocery pickup service will launch in cities across the United States. The new pickup option works alongside Instacart’s delivery service, which supports many of the same supermarkets.

“Any viable grocery delivery / pickup service needs a wide variety of retailers to source from. Instacart has different buying options that include both pickup and delivery to keep customers interested and to stay competitive against the likes of Amazon’s grocery stores, Prime Fresh, or even DoorDash.”

“What Have We Done?”: Silicon Valley Engineers Fear They've Created a Monster | Vanity Fair
Yet even as we roundly condemned the tech world’s treatment of a vulnerable new class of worker, we knew the stakes were much higher: high enough to alter the future of work itself, to the detriment of all but a select few. “Most people,” I said, interrupting the hubbub, “don’t even see the problem unless they’re on the inside.” Everyone nodded. The risk, we agreed, is that the gig economy will become the only economy, swallowing up entire groups of employees who hold full-time jobs, and that it will, eventually, displace us all. The bigger risk, however, is that the only people who understand the looming threat are the ones enabling it.
