The Wall Street Journal WSJ : The clock is ticking for millions of fliers to update their IDs ID needsEditing passport drivers license
After nearly 15 years, the deadline to get a REAL ID driver’s license is finally approaching. Travelers without one will have to use their passports even for domestic flights.
Read in The Wall Street Journal:
Shared from Apple News
The Oct. 1, 2020, deadline has the potential to create chaos at airports and disrupt travel significantly. Some estimates suggest half of all travelers may have driver’s licenses that don’t comply with requirements called REAL ID. You can quickly tell if you comply by looking for a star in the upper-right corner of your driver’s license.
Unless you can use a passport, military ID, enhanced driver’s license (one with limited passport information embedded) or other approved identification after the deadline, you may show up at the airport and get subjected to secondary screening. Worse, you may not be able to fly. Secondary screening usually involves an interview and efforts to verify identity, and most checkpoints have limited capacity to do that. If there are too many people without IDs, ticketed passengers will be turned away.

Professor Karim Comments on Trump Administration Travel Ban
TAMPA BAY TIMES -- The Trump administration had in fact promised exceptions, but only in certain circumstances. Applicants would have to show they would suffer “undue hardship” outside of the United States — and that their entry would be “in the national interest.”

The conditions are intangible and difficult to prove, said Persis Karim, who directs the Center for Iranian Diaspora Studies at San Francisco State University.

Professor Evason: I am not going to name names. I think one or two senior members of staff bought into the ideology of Universal Credit. Universal Credit is odd. It is not a normal benefit. It is like a religion and, therefore—

Q144 Lady Hermon: We have heard it described as many things but not as some—

Professor Evason: —there is this sort of set of beliefs that it is, by definition, a good thing and, by definition, it will get people into work, regardless of whether or not the work is available. We have had speakers over from England, and we explained all of this and they come back with that line, “No, it is a wonderful thing. It will get people back into work”.

Iranian Emigres Drawn to California by Education, Weather, Professor Karim Says
PUBLIC RADIO INTERNATIONAL -- Persis Karim, director of the Center for Iranian Diaspora Studies at San Francisco State University, says California attracted thousands of Iranians because they had ties to the state.

“Iran sent many students abroad in the ’60s and the ’70s. And California was the epicenter, because we had the Higher Education Act [of 1965], which made college education more affordable at that time, including for foreign students,” she says, adding that California’s mild weather appealed to Iranians, too.

Professor Karim: Iranian American Community Thrives Despite Trauma of Revolution
PUBLIC RADIO INTERNATIONAL -- The generation of Iranians who immigrated to the United States in the aftermath of the 1979 Islamic Revolution faced backlash from what was happening back in Iran.

In November of that year, Iranian students took a group of Americans at the U.S. embassy hostage. This sparked a crisis between the two countries that lasted for 444 days. Anti-Iranian sentiment was high.

“People that were close to me were threatened with violence because of the hostage crisis,” says Persis Karim of San Francisco State University. "My own father didn’t tell people he was Iranian. He said he was Greek to avoid any association.”

Karim says despite all the trauma that Iranians endured, many have gone on to flourish in this country. In Silicon Valley, for example, Iranian Americans hold top posts at companies such as Uber, eBay, Airbnb and Google.

“There are scientists, engineers, but there are also artists and filmmakers and poets,” Karim says.

Leslie Wong Retires from SF State Following Successful Fundraising Campaign
NOB HILL GAZETTE -- Wong, who is retiring next month after seven years as president of SFSU, kicked off the University’s first major fundraising campaign, implemented a campus-wide strategic plan and elevated the school’s athletic profile. From a new Liberal and Creative Arts building to a forthcoming Institute for Innovation in the business college, the University is poised to continue moving ahead, even after Wong’s tenure is over.

“He made us think anything was possible,” says Venesia Thompson-Ramsay, the school’s interim vice president for university advancement. “He just has big dreams.”

The campaign, dubbed the BOLD Thinking campaign, is scheduled to continue for another 18 months, but it’s already raised more than 90 percent of that $150 million goal. Anchored by major gifts from Chris Larsen, an alumnus and co-founder of Ripple, and his wife Lyna Lam, and by George and Judy Marcus, also both alums, the campaign has not only improved campus facilities, but is also providing more scholarship money to students, increasing the number of endowed faculty chairs, and encouraging innovative programming campuswide, like the new Center for Iranian Diaspora Studies.

Contemporary Bay Area Art Featured at Center for Iranian Diaspora Studies Exhibition 'Once at Present'
ART PRACTICAL (SAN FRANCISCO) -- Memory, both personal and collective, exists on a threshold: belonging neither fully to the past nor the present, it occupies its own unique in-between space. “Once at Present: Contemporary Art of Bay Area Iranian Diaspora” at Minnesota Street Project, sponsored by the Center for Iranian Diaspora Studies at San Francisco State University, revels in this space as a site of cultural production.

Through the act of remembering, the works in “Once at Present” give shape, form and sound to the unseen traces of diasporic life.
