In recent years, social media has become ubiquitous
and important for social networking and content sharing. And
yet, the content that is generated from these websites remains
largely untapped. In this paper, we demonstrate how social media
content can be used to predict real-world outcomes. In particular,
we use the chatter from Twitter.com to forecast box-office
revenues for movies. We show that a simple model built from
the rate at which tweets are created about particular topics can
outperform market-based predictors. We further demonstrate
how sentiments extracted from Twitter can be further utilized to
improve the forecasting power of social media.

HP and ASU demo bendable, unbreakable electronic displays
Well, what do you know? Nearly four years after Arizona State University opened its very own flexible display center comes this, a prototype device that's purportedly easy to manufactur, easy on the environment and practically as strong as Thor. HP and ASU have teamed up to demonstrate the fresh e-displays, which are constructed almost entirely of plastic and consume far less power than traditional computer monitors. The "unbreakable displays" were crafted using self-aligned imprint lithography (SAIL) technology invented in HP Labs, and while we'd love to see this in a pliable laptop at CES 2009, we suspect it'll be a few years yet before these slither out to the commercial realm.Filed under: Displays HP and ASU demo bendable, unbreakable electronic displays originally appeared on Engadget on Mon, 08 Dec 2008 10:30:00 EST. Self-publishing, publish-on-demand magazines. Send a PDF, and they handle printing, delivery, subscriptions, etc. Seems such an obvious idea now Derek Powazek and co have done this. (via Daring Fireball)

Steve: Developing on the Edge - Arity
HP Labs' Steve Loughran shares a short list of pros and cons of the Java platform (interesting that most of the cons are fixable) intermixed with some comments on Prolog and Erlang.
