howlingcommandoes   36

star-anise: last-snowfall: star-anise: (okay... - that kind of grateful
(okay the actual best part of the day is that my brain is fixated on the time after the Liberation of Paris when Dernier got them all “billeted” at a brothel run by the sister of a friend of a cousin that had running water and baths and food and good shaving-soap and all those good amenities and Bucky and Steve didn’t leave their room for 24 hours)

That time Steve has to admit to Natasha that despite there being historical records of him having been in Paris three separate times, with two of them even SHIELD records saying he had nothing official to do (one of them the infamous Leave of the Howling Commandos, the other twiddling their thumbs after Liberation) he has never seen any of the city beyond the inside of a couple hotel-like buildings *cough* and a few cafes.

“Steve,” she says. “One of the most famous Commandos photos ever is of Dugan pretending to throw Dernier off the Eiffel Tower.”

"Yeah,” says Steve uncomfortably, “I heard about that.”

“Steve,” she says, her mouth starting to curve and her eyes starting to sparkle, “where were you?”

Steve goes slightly pink. Natasha starts to laugh, delightedly.

And to think, all these years a certain subset of French society had been sniggering behind closed doors that the Americans are so prudish, Captain America could stay in a brothel and ask the girls for nothing more than another bar of soap.

The girls in question thought the two of them were just so cute, they never told anyone otherwise. Although the stories about contests to see who could make Captain America blush worst are totally true.

(Natasha may actually laugh herself to death.) (Also Jesus Rogers, he wasn’t actually a supersoldier back then, how did you not break him?) (Steve doesn’t want to talk to her anymore.)

Tonight, I Dream in Technicolor - gwyneth rhys (gwyneth) - Captain America (Movies), Marvel Cinematic Universe [Archive of Our Own]
Steve had concocted numerous highly imaginative scenarios for how he would reunite with Bucky once he finally made it into the army. There was: Bucky’s in a firefight, pinned down by German artillery, when Steve’s unit swoops in to save them, and Steve drops down next to him in the foxhole to ask nonchalantly, “What have you gotten yourself into this time, Barnes?”

Steve slides in next to Bucky in the mess, where he’s regaling his buddies with stories over chow, and says, “Is this seat taken?”

It was never: Steve’s leading a ragtag squad of international war-hero rejects, wearing a dead man’s jacket and helmet, accompanied by a paunchy actor in a Captain America costume with droopy tights and a goofy mask, and together they’re rescuing Bucky from the stronghold of a comic-book villain come to life.

For all Steve’s bravado, his disregard and his blind determination, Bucky knows that neither of them thought they’d end up here – Bucky, with a body full of poison and secrets, a head full of landmines; Steve, with the weight of a nation on his newly-formed shoulders; both of them, with eyes for each other first.

At least that part isn’t new.

to memory now I can't recall - Etharei - Captain America (Movies), The Avengers (Marvel Movies) [Archive of Our Own]
While on a mission storming a HYDRA facility, James Buchanan Barnes touches one of the many strange alien devices collected by the Red Skull. He does this, in fact, twice— in the past, and in the future.

Next thing he knows, Bucky Barnes is opening his eyes in the 21st century, which is full of great gadgets and coffee, and at least includes his old pal Steve. (And, inexplicably, a different Stark.) Meanwhile, the Winter Soldier finds himself in the middle of World War Two, helping Captain America hunt down HYDRA (which is at least familiar), pretending to be Bucky Barnes (which is not), and figuring out the very noisy group of soldiers who call themselves the Howling Commandos.

Silent thunder, as of a thousand wings - kaasknot - Captain America (Movies) [Archive of Our Own]
A theologian once said that angels are constructs of love and holy rage, and chained to obedience through both. Or maybe a theologian hadn't said that. Maybe it was the Bright One himself, or just Uriel being grumpy.

But Bucky knows that he loves Steve, and he loves his taskmaster of a boss even as he gripes about him over beers after work, and he loves the dames with their red, red lips and smooth, soft curves (and he loves the guys, loves their strength and the tall, proud lines of them), and he loves old Mrs. Greene even when her rheumatism acts up and she turns mean as a wet cat. But he loves Steve most of all, and if Bucky is shackled to mindless obedience because of it, he calls it a good trade, because Steven Grant Rogers is the best person he knows. When it comes down to it, he figures his desire only adds a new dimension to a love that was already there, glowing hot enough to burn.

He was sent to Earth in a cage of mortal flesh to watch over Steve, and Bucky can do no less than love him with all his heart.

He tries it the easy way, the first time, like the coward Steve's never believed he is.

It's 1943, and Bucky's still waking clammy with night sweats, phantom restraints pinning him down and Zola's voice in his head. He's still talking big to cover how he jerks away whenever anyone puts a hand on him. He’s pretending he doesn't see the way Steve looks at him, the way they all look at him, like he's in danger of coming apart.

Only this time – this time when they try to give him a discharge, he takes it. He crams what little owns in his duffel and ships off for the states.

stand-alone sequel
The gal in the red dress had come and gone, but Rogers was still in the back, nursing the same beer he’d had all night and deep in conversation with Barnes.

Dugan, watching them, sighed. “He’s the reason we’re alive, you know.”

Morita gave him an “Are you kidding me?” look. “Rogers? Yeah, I was kind of there for that.”

Dugan shook his head. “No, Barnes.”

Falsworth nodded. “He’s the one Rogers went in there to get.” Dernier did the same, saying something in French that Gabe responded to with a solemn expression.

“Can’t be,” Morita scoffed, taking another drink. “You don’t break into an enemy base just to get one guy.”

“Did you listen to the chatter when we got back?” Gabe asked. “No one, including the general, expected to see us.”

“I heard someone say that Rogers offered himself up for disciplinary action,” Falsworth added. “The general, unsurprisingly, declined the offer.”

“And when he was letting us out, he didn’t ask us a single question about enemy intel or guard placement,” Gabe continued.

Dugan nodded. “The only thing he cared about was knowing where Barnes was.”

Silence fell around the table as everyone’s eyes went to the two men still sitting at the back bar.

“So what we’re saying is that the guy we just promised to follow into battle went on a suicide run for one guy,” Morita said finally.

Steve just wanted his best friend back. He gets it, and it's not easier.

"Oh, he's said something, all right," Hill says. "The same thing, over and over again."
On the screen, Bucky lifts his head, jerking his chin up in defiance. Steve's seen him do it a thousand times before.
"Name, rank, and serial number," he guesses quietly.
"How'd you know?" Fury asks.
"It's him," Steve says. "It's really him, not the Winter Soldier. It's Bucky."

caring is not an advantage | Is Bucky and Dugan's relationship canon? And do you think the Howlies got close before meeting Steve? Cheers xx
Is Bucky and Dugan's relationship canon? And do you think the Howlies got close before meeting Steve? Cheers xx

Yes, it is, based on the comics prequel to the first cap movie, “The First Vengeance” by Fred Van Lente.

I’ve already kind of went into a LOT OF DETAIL on how close the Commandos actually were, and how they were a lot closer to Bucky than Steve, especially to start with, here. It also touches on how it is canon that Dum Dum looked after Bucky from the get go.

I have SO MANY Howlies posts and headcanons and my tags are a mess but generally they’re all kind of grouped here and they include some amazing work from some other talented folks as well! :)

PS IF YOU ARE NOT READING LEGACY by monstrousreg you’re doing yourself a disservice and Triplett is disappointed in you.

Leaves Dancing — shanology: mellyblue007: shanology: ...
Okay, so I have a cheesy, poorly-written headcannon about the tent. (I’m a fangirl, not a writer!)
I think, at first, Steve didn’t want to be seen as entitled and he didn’t want the Commandos to view him as “the famous Captain America”, so he slept out in the open with his men. He ate what they ate, and took on more than his share of the boring chores like the nightly guard duty. If the Cap and Sarge always paired up for patrol, or if they happened to sit close enough that their shoulders were pressed together, the Commandos knew that they were best friends from way back and it was obvious that they were like family. And if any of the men ever noticed that Cap and Sarge occasionally looked at each other for just a little too long, until one of them finally dropped his eyes, then they never said anything about it.
Everything changed after “Rogers’ second incident with a grenade”. The first incident with a grenade ended with the Commandos slinking away from the medical tent while Barnes yelled at Rogers and Rogers gave back as good as he was getting. It didn’t escape their attention that their fearless leaders sullenly avoided talking to each other for the next 24 hours after their spat…no wait…their disagreement. The next time Captain Rogers encountered a grenade, he wasn’t so lucky. The Commandos were tasked with rescuing a unit that had been pinned down by enemy fire and, of course, Cap was the first one to run out into the line of fire. When the grenade went off, he bore the brunt of the blast while shielding a wounded soldier. In the medical tent, the Commandos stood around helplessly, while the med techs cleaned the wounds on his back and treated him for inhalation burns. All the while, Bucky clung to Steve’s hand and listened to his labored wheezing in terror, haunted by a thousand nights of asthma attacks and pneumonia that constantly threatened to take Steve away from him. The Commandos had seen their Sergeant irritated…and they had certainly seen him angry…but they had never seen him beg.
"Steve, you can’t keep doing this! One day, you are going to run ahead where I can’t protect you and that serum won’t be enough to save you. If something happened to you…I don’t…I can’t… You are Captain America. You could ask for a transfer and they would give you one. Steve…please."

end of the line (my ass)
I just saw a clip of Robert Redford talking about a recommendation letter Paul Newman sent for him and it made me think of Bucky and Steve, bear with me, okay?

Maybe Bucky’s up for some military award he doesn’t want and Peggy asks Steve to write a recommendation letter. If Captain America writes a recommendation letter, Bucky’s a shoe-in.

To whom it may concern:

Sergeant James Buchanan Barnes has owed me twenty-five cents for over ten years. He will not assume his obligation under threat of loss of friendship, honor, or loyalty. I cannot, in good conscience, recommend him for anything.

Sincerely, Captain Steven Grant Rogers.

The Howling Commandos laugh themselves sick and Peggy smacks Steve upside his stupid, snickering blond head.

Years later, after the events in Washington and London, the collector that had the letter gives it back to Steve because she figures it’s important. Bucky, who has otherwise been quiet for the month he’s lived with the Avengers, reads it and laughs.

Our Perceived Realities - SkyisGray - Captain America - All Media Types [Archive of Our Own]
Bucky Barnes has always lived at the edge of Steve’s map. From grade school to church to this foul-smelling dock job, where Bucky heaves crates around and Steve counts figures in the dark, cool office, they’ve always been close enough to be aware of each other but too far to strike up any real friendship.

They’ve lived in the same neighborhood among the same stock of beaten-down Irish immigrants their whole lives, and they’ve had three proper conversations.
