J'attendrai - Quasar - Rivers of London - Ben Aaronovitch [Archive of Our Own]
Probationary Constable Peter Grant met me for the first time when I walked up to him by the portico of the Actors' Church on a freezing winter night and said, "Hello. What are you up to?" However, I first met Detective Sergeant Peter Grant when he jogged up to my doorstep on a mild autumn afternoon and said, "There you are, sir. It is you, isn't it?"

I've Found a New Baby - knight_tracer, thefourthvine - Rivers of London - Ben Aaronovitch [Archive of Our Own]
It’s an embarrassing cliché, I know, but there was an actual basket, made of what looked to be actual wicker, actually sitting there. It was oval and large and had spaces for handholds on either end; for a minute, I thought it was full of laundry, and my mind spun an image of a ghost laundress. Then the small hand emerged from the basket, waved around for a minute, and smacked down again.

A few weeks after the events in Broken Homes, Peter and Nightingale have to deal with multiple drownings in the Hampstead Ponds. The situation is messy. The relationship between England's only two officially sanctioned wizards even more so.

four and twenty lovebirds (baked in a pie) - stardust_rain - Rivers of London - Ben Aaronovitch [Archive of Our Own]
In which Thomas Nightingale is the fearsome judge of Great British Bake Off, and Peter Grant is the unerringly goofy and supportive contestant that wins his (and the nation's) heart. Epistolary/media fic that really gets into what is great about GBBO (found families, kindness, hilarious mishaps, heartbreaking goodbyes) and what is not great about tabloid culture (tbh, the last third of this fic started to wear on me a bit with its multiple faux thinkpieces), with lots of bad puns and squeal-inducing romance peppered throughout.

Peter Grant is a contestant on The Great British Bake Off 2016, Thomas Nightingale is its famously stoic, poker-faced judge. The nation’s running commentary is their background soundtrack as they flirt onscreen. It’s gonna be a very long ten weeks.

Bootleg Turn - leupagus - Rivers of London - Ben Aaronovitch [Archive of Our Own]
In which Peter shows off some of his newly acquired advanced driving course skills to mess with Nightingale, and it ends with rather more messing about than either of them anticipate. Hilarious and snarky and sexy and just the tiniest bit sweet.

A Few Years Later - Sixthlight - Rivers of London - Ben Aaronovitch [Archive of Our Own]
In which it's been about a decade and Peter's graduated to full-wizard, the Folly's managed to acquire a few more apprentices, Molly goes outside sometimes, and Peter and Nightingale do a rather stupid, wonderful thing and fall in love. Hilariously, the author couldn't make up their mind about how they actually get together, and so instead gives us three possibilities for that sparking off point and then a number of fics set in and around the aftermath. The get-together fics were all nice, but the author really hit their stride when they got into the low-key established relationship groove. Every single one of those fics was a gem, from the garbled romance, to the heartily confused but mostly supportive outsider povs, to the wry little background notes on what the Folly's got going on, ten years down the line, with Peter in a position of relative power (lord help them all). I think Inappropriate Conduct might be my favorite (Lesley! Actual "I love you"s!), but that may just be because it's the culmination of a lot of built up moments and feelings and developments and small, but no less real, happinesses.

Shelter - Esteliel - Rivers of London - Ben Aaronovitch [Archive of Our Own]
In which Peter and Nightingale find comfort in each other after Broken Homes. Look, I am as into uber emotional sex scenes as the next person, but one way you can pretty much guarantee I will flinch back with embarrassment is if they BOTH CRY.

Longhouse - Philomytha - Rivers of London - Ben Aaronovitch [Archive of Our Own]
In which Peter and Nightingale are forced to take shelter in the very magical, extremely malignant house they believe to be the culprit behind two recent deaths on the Dartmouth moors. I avoided reading this because I am a big old baby about scary shit, but as usual I underestimated fandom, as plot (and of course, romance!) soundly trumped horror in this suspenseful little action fic.

First Impressions - manic_intent - Rivers of London - Ben Aaronovitch [Archive of Our Own]
In which Peter realizes that he should trust his first impressions more as Nightingale's soft spot for him starts to take on capital-I-Implications and Abigail's capacity for being a holy terror takes a turn for the disconcertingly literal when the Folly realizes she's superbly magically gifted. Slashy, epic casefic written before Broken Homes, meaning that we get some wonderfully weird found family stuff at the Folly in addition to a romantic subplot not predestined to end in femme fatale ignominy. Because as much as I hate the idea of turning to slash in reaction to bad het in the canon, /this/ canon is so good outside of its worrying inability to stop screwing over the female love interests that it's kind of a relief to read a story that tosses that aspect of canon but keeps everything else (i.e. compelling supernatural shit and casework with lots of great characters and a dedication to diverse representation). Really, this fic tunes in so well to Peter's canonical voice that it's a bit uncanny how easy to pretend that this is just another book in the series. Sadly, the case/plot doesn't quite live up to the books, since in going for something a bit more grandiose in scale, it had to give up the contained act structure that characterizes the series. This lent a slightly manic air of "this is supposed to be epic so lots of dramatic things need to happen!!!!" to proceedings that didn't always improve the reading experience. Still, great characterizations, great team dynamics, great low-key romance element not overshadowing the ambitious and really, very extremely cool plot = great fic, no matter how I split hairs.
