Why no one has solved event discovery — Hugh Malkin
In 2011, I set out to create an app named Hugecity to help people discover what is happening around them in real-life, rather than simply connecting online as most social networking applications had done. Over three years I grew Hugecity to a million visitors a month but struggled with retention.

What Happens to a Place When the Data About It Is Lost? - Finn Arne Jørgensen - The Atlantic
This piece takes me back to early 2000s and discussions with geologist, ecologists, geographers, and historians about non-urban digital place marking with historical background on distinct place, but also tied to a vertical understanding of the geological formations that are miles deep and up through the atmosphere.

This was a riff a reader of my finding and tracking the Urban Tapestry folks were looking at (doing something very similar in urban environments). These people that reached out were in Montana and the Dakotas. All the information was tied into geolocation through GPS. Nobody had the funding, but the all had the same vision and dream.

Play by your own rules
Josh Williams, one of the founders of Gowalla, looking back at when Gowalla launched and needed to compete with Foursquare

While we were busy playing tug-of-war over check-ins, someone else found a path to the goal with less friction.

And no, that “someone else” isn’t Foursquare …

Play by your own rules. — Work & Education — Medium
About the same time we began exploring themes for other game-like experiences to build. A few ideas were basically PackRat re-skinned for a different audience. Another was a quasi-RTS that would reward you for polluting the world (I kid you not, it was going to be awesome). But only one of our ideas truly stood out as being unique.

The first iPhone with GPS had just landed, so were enthralled with the idea of mixing art, game-like incentives, and real-world location to inspire people to go explore and share their favorite places and experiences. Eventually we would refine this goal as “a way to see the world through the eyes of your fiends." We believed this idea to be the craziest of the lot, so we set about on a rigid pace to launch it in time for SXSW (these being the days you still had a chance of being heard).

Of course, this idea was Gowalla.

Play by your own rules | Josh Williams
'Play by your own rules. Listen to your users more than the press. Don't get sucked into the gravity hole between you and your competition. Ruthlessly run your own path, not someone else's.'
