I'm working on a selfhostable Google Photos clone : selfhosted
I'm working on a selfhostable Google Photos clone. The reason why I'm working on this is because I want a nice and fun way to view the photos I've taken over the years, but am too lazy to go to through them and organize them by hand.
Google Photos provides a nice solution to this, as you can just set it up on your phone, which will sync all your photos to their servers and do all the cool stuff like automatic album generation. The use case I had in mind is that you'd have some other instant photo backup solution, like Nextcloud, and have this project watch the synced directories and do all the cool stuff.
This has been an ongoing side project of mine for the past month or so, and so far I've gotten a few of the core features I wanted to implement. It's in very early stages, so it's not really ready for daily usage.
For more details, you can check out the github repos.
https://github.com/hooram/ownphotos-backend https://github.com/hooram/ownphotos-frontend
The instructions are a bit long, but if you have 30 min to spare, you could install and mess around with it.
I would appreciate any constructive feedback and stay tuned!

Using Google Photos for unlimited IP security camera off-site storage | istartedsomething
I recently upgraded my home internet from a measly 2Mbit upload to a more respectable 40Mbps on the Australian National Broadband Network. I’ve been thinking of good uses for this newfound upstream bandwidth and one idea was to off-site my IP security camera footage.

I’ve previously used cloud surveillance storage services like CameraFTP but the retention time (how long the photos are stored) were limited to 7 or 30 days, the UI was clunky and slow and the pricing seemed exorbitant for what is essentially just a few MB of storage quota.

Then I remembered Google Photos where I recently backed up around 300GB of family photos and videos. It’s free and unlimited storage (for 16MP), easy to upload and browseable from anywhere on desktop and mobile.

Now all my security camera images are stored on Google Photos with infinite retention for free!

Boring Google – Stratechery by Ben Thompson
The opening to Google I/O couldn’t have been more different. There was no grand statement of vision, no mind-bending re-framing of how to think about the broader tech ecosystem, just an affirmation of the importance of artificial intelligence — the dominant theme of last year’s I/O — and how it fit in with Google’s original vision.
