Digital Catalogues Study
This report presents findings from a study of scholarly digital catalogues published by the Art Institute of Chicago, the J. Paul Getty Museum, the National Gallery of Art, and the Philadelphia Museum of Art. Each of these institutions has forged new ground in museum publishing, taking the traditional print catalogue and reimagining it for an online environment. Each catalogue selected for this study was designed as digital-first, incorporating features to enhance the reading experience such as zoomable images and integration with the museums’ online collection pages. All were developed for a target audience of researchers, other academic non-specialists, and college-level students. These projects tend to be distinguished from other types of web publications in that they originate from print-publishing traditions, are specifically authored, are published (and potentially revised) at a specific date, are highly visual, and include scholarly apparatus such as footnotes, bibliographies, and appendices.

Getty Exhibit on the Art of Alchemy
Long shrouded in secrecy, alchemy is now recognized as the ancestor of modern chemistry. Alchemists were notorious for attempting to make synthetic gold, but their goals were far more ambitious: to transform and bend nature to the will of an industrious human imagination. For scientists, philosophers, and artists alike, alchemy seemed to hold the key to unlocking the secrets of creation. Alchemists’ efforts to discover the way the world is made have had an enduring impact on artistic practice and expression around the globe. Inventions born from alchemical laboratories include metal alloys for sculpture and ornament, oil paints, effects in glassmaking, and even the chemical baths of photography. The mysterious art of alchemy transformed visual culture from antiquity to the Industrial Age, and its legacy still permeates the world we make today.

The Getty picks a theme for Pacific Standard Time 2024: art and science - Los Angeles Times
"Over the last eight years, the Getty-funded Pacific Standard Time exhibitions have tackled the art of Los Angeles and Latin America. Now the Getty is getting ready to launch a PST series for 2024 that will go beyond the world of fine art: “Pacific Standard Time: Art x Science x L.A.” will explore the intersections between art and science in Southern California.

The Getty developed the “Art x Science x L.A.” theme with its planning partners, the Hammer Museum and the Los Angeles County Museum of Art. As part of the initiative, the Getty will expand participation to scientific institutions across Southern California. (..)

As in the past, institutions around Southern California will be invited to apply for grants from the Getty for the purpose of researching, developing and staging exhibitions. Cuno declined to give an exact dollar figure but said it will be in keeping with past efforts. The Getty spent $16.3 million on the 2017 iteration of PST."
