Bahrain's flashy crony capitalism cannot last | Ala'a Shehabi | Comment is free | guardian.co.uk
In Bahrain's hosting of the grand prix, crony capitalism is fighting back with a vengeance, and is seeking to guard the political and economic formulas that have been causing social discontent. The high economic growth rates in the Gulf over the past decade (even taking into account the international financial crisis) have illustrated that these regimes are as susceptible to social unrest as other countries.

The Formula One event and the neoliberal project that it is integrally a part of is not just about politics and economics, it is about violence, risk and security racked upon people. It may be too early to believe that revolutionary dreams will soon replace the realpolitik of oil and money and end the hyper-modern projects of the quintessential Gulf state. But they will one day.

Syrian rebels get influx of arms with gulf neighbors’ money, U.S. coordination - The Washington Post
Syrian rebels battling the regime of President Bashar al-Assad have begun receiving significantly more and better weapons in recent weeks, an effort paid for by Persian Gulf nations and coordinated in part by the United States, according to opposition activists and U.S. and foreign officials.

Obama administration officials emphasized that the United States is neither supplying nor funding the lethal material, which includes antitank weaponry. Instead, they said, the administration has expanded contacts with opposition military forces to provide the gulf nations with assessments of rebel credibility and command-and-control infrastructure.

FreeBSD Quarterly Status Report January-March, 2012
Both FreeBSD 10.0-CURRENT and 9.0-STABLE now have Clang 3.0 release installed by default. At least on 10.0-CURRENT, both world and the GENERIC kernel can be completely built without any -Werror warnings. This may not be the case for all custom kernel configurations yet.

Saudi Arabia "to announce union with Bahrain" | Al Akhbar English
"I expect there will be an announcement of two or three countries. We can't be sure but I have a strong expectation," Samira Rajab, Bahrain's minister of state for information affairs, said on Sunday.

"Sovereignty will remain with each of the countries and they would remain as UN members but they would unite in decisions regarding foreign relations, security, military and economy."

Gulf Disunion - By David Roberts | The Middle East Channel
Yet the core reason why there will be no meaningful security or military cooperation is that the United States guarantees the security in the Gulf. Difficult decisions to subsume personal and state rivalries, to overcome ingrained problems with joint training and even joined up procurement can be avoided with a U.S. security umbrella. Indeed it may be instructive to note that Bahrain, the base of the U.S. Fifth Fleet, is the only Gulf country seriously considering such a union and is also the only Gulf country about which there has been a debate recently about the removal of U.S. forces. Only when America, like the Ottomans, and the British before them, finally leave the Gulf will the Gulf States be truly forced to come to terms with their own security situation and will potentially countenance subsuming their national proclivities for a collective alliance.

A Monarchical Affair: From Morocco to the Arabian Peninsula
The proposal of Moroccan integration into the GCC is most obviously an act of political desperation. Should the Moroccan monarchy have fallen to a popular uprising, the Gulf monarchies would have lost one of their remaining political and economic extensions in North Africa. Even as a nonmember of the GCC, Morocco is already benefiting from its ties with the Gulf monarchies. Investment from the Gulf contributed in placing Morocco at the top of FDI Markets 2011/12 “African Countries of the Future” list, before South Africa and Mauritius. It is imperative to assess the rationale behind Morocco joining the GCC in the context of government-led reforms in response to protests. The Moroccan regime’s response to protests through quick reforms and rushed elections provided a model for another Arab monarchy, namely Jordan. Several months later, Bahrain also played lip service to the idea and announced constitutional reforms of its own.
