Vehicle fire at Olean Kwik Fill sets off fire suppression system
OLEAN — The Olean Fire Department extinguished a vehicle fire Friday at the Kwik Fill on Main Street, but not before the gas station’s fire suppression system blanketed the area in white powder.

The engine of a red Kia Sedona minivan ignited into flames at approximately 4:40 p.m., causing a Kwik Fill employee to activate the fire suppression system, said Olean Fire Capt. Patrick Zink.

However, the minivan was not parked under the gas station canopy and the dry chemical agent did not extinguish the flames. Firefighters then arrived on scene and used a handline to extinguish them.

“Obviously gasoline is quite flammable so anytime we get a call for a fire near a gas pump it can be more dangerous, but it’s really no different from any other fire,” said Zink, adding gas stations have emergency switches to shut down its fuel pumps as well.

No one was injured by the flames, but a few individuals on scene were exposed to the extinguishing agent and checked out by EMS personnel. Zink said they all refused transport to Olean General Hospital, which is located directly across the street from the Kwik Fill.

Zink said the minivan operator had pulled into the station to get some gas, but noticed an issue with the vehicle and spoke with a Kwik Fill employee. Zink said the operator left the scene prior to the fire and was not on scene when firefighters arrived.

Robert Jackson Bennett - What It's Like to Own an Electric Car
And this is the real revelation buried in a lot of my experience with electric cars: the driving experience is in no way right-sized.

When you buy an ICE vehicle, you are not buying a transportation solution to fit your regular transportation needs. You are buying a transportation solution to fit your most abnormal, maximal transportation needs.

This is a little bit like saying, “I drive from Houston to Austin a fair bit – but occasionally I fly to London for work. So, it makes total sense to buy a private jet, just in case, and fly that to Houston and Austin.”

4K Gallons of Gas Spilled When Tanker Rolls Over on Cape Cod
A gasoline tanker rolled over Thursday morning, dumping thousands of gallons of gas into the streets of Harwich.

The tanker rolled over outside of Shaw's Supermarket on Sisson Road just before 4 a.m. Thursday, closing Sisson Road from Route 28 to Gilbert Lane until 8 p.m.

When officials arrived at the scene early Thursday, they called for additional resources, including a Hazmat Team. More than 90 responders from over 20 different local, county, state and federal agencies arrived to help.

The truck was carrying about 11,500 gallons of gasoline. Officials estimate they cleaned up 8,000 gallons of gas from the truck and another 2,000 from catch basins and the tidal marsh the storm drains in the streets emptied into.

Philly 'narrowly dodged a catastrophe’ as deadly chemical wasn’t released in refinery fire
A series of explosions and a spectacular fire ripped through a South Philadelphia oil refinery early Friday, rattling windows, injuring workers, unnerving the city, and causing gasoline markets to spike on speculation of fuel shortages.

The incident at Philadelphia Energy Solutions (PES), the East Coast’s largest refinery, injured five workers, who were treated at the scene. The fire was still burning Friday night.

Safety advocates said the danger could have been far worse had the blast released a cloud of hydrogen fluoride, a deadly chemical used in the refining process.

The U.S. Chemical Safety and Hazard Investigation Board (CSB), an independent federal agency, announced Friday that it was dispatching a four-person team to Philadelphia to investigate the incident, which was similar to refinery accidents in Torrance, Calif., in 2015 and Superior, Wis., last year that came perilously close to releasing hydrogen fluoride. The Wisconsin accident prompted a temporary evacuation of residents.

The Most Important Scientist You’ve Never Heard Of | Mental Floss
"Lead makes humans sick because the body confuses it with calcium. The most abundant mineral in the human body, calcium helps oversee blood pressure, blood vessel function, muscle contractions, and cell growth. As the milk cartons boast, it keeps bones strong. In the brain, calcium ions bounce between neurons to help keep the synapses firing. But when the body absorbs lead, the toxic metal swoops in, replaces calcium, and starts doing these jobs terribly—if at all."

Credit union evacuated after chemical spill in Kalamazoo
KALAMAZOO, Mich. — A hazmat crew was sent to Alvan Road and a nearby credit union was evacuated after a chemical spill at a trucking company.

Kalamazoo Department of Public Safety and members of the Kalamazoo County Hazmat team were called to the Old Dominion Freight Line just before 10 a.m. and found a 55-gallon drum of trimethyl phosphate had been punctured and was leaking in a trailer.

Trimethyl phosphate is a chemical used as a gasoline additive, paint solvent, and in preparing polymers and resins, according to the U.S. National Library of Medicine Toxicology Data Network.

The Hazmat team stopped the leak, but not before nearly 25 gallons had leaked into the trailer.

Houston Ship Channel remains closed after tanker collision spills gasoline
Much of the Houston Ship Channel remained closed Saturday a day after two vessels collided, causing a large gasoline blend spill and setting off another round of environmentalists concerns for the Gulf Coast.

The 755-foot tanker Genesis River carrying liquefied natural gas collided Friday afternoon with a tug boat pushing two barges, each carrying 25,000 barrels of product, around 3:30 p.m., the U.S. Coast Guard said. One barge capsized and the other was damaged, leaking a gasoline product called reformate.

The channel closure is the first unplanned shutdown since March, when a massive chemical storage tank fire at Intercontinental Terminals Co., in Deer Park spilled petroleum products into nearby waterways. That three-day closure cost the energy industry about $1 billion, experts estimated.
