How a medieval mystic was the first creator of fanfiction | Aeon Essays
Growing up, I loved books. I loved them so much that I went to graduate school to study them, and I didn’t read a novel for five years. One of the terrible secrets about attending graduate school in literature is that it can ruin your ability to read for pleasure; pick up a book, and a nasty voice whispers that you should be reading something serious – or reading something seriously. So in the classroom, I learned to put away my body. Outside of the academy, however, specifically through fanfiction, I was learning to read with it.

|| This is a great essay to read as a fan, just to luxuriate in the 'yes, yes, that, these are things I know and believe and I am glad someone in the academy is sticking up for them.'

The title's a hot mess--no way was fanfiction first invented in medieval Europe, stories have been around too long, but whatever, people do shit for clicks. It's fine.

The Velociraptor Diaries - FeatheredMenace - Fail_Fandomanon RPF [Archive of Our Own]
Third-favorite clutch-sib and I, inspired by vintage holovids, investigated mixing vodka, tequila, gin, and sake. Experiment a success, but side-effects dubious: clutch-sib suddenly decided wants to create "webcomic" using terrible "bundled software," make it super-meta about trolls, or us, or coming of age or the end of life or some deep themes like that, also include lots of classist stuff and (unclear, both quite drunk by then) either royalty or Marxist theory.

The Bar at the End of the Fandom - firstlightofeos - AO3 Tags, Meta - Fandom [Archive of Our Own]
Once inside, PWP looks around the bar, taking everything in. It's fairly empty, and quiet, though that's not unexpected, given that the fandom's still in its early days. Ratings and Length stand behind the bar, chatting easily as they prepare and serve drinks. A counter above the bar declaims "FICS SERVED," and increments each time a drink is finished. The bunnies that form the waitstaff hop around, collecting and passing out drink orders—at this point, it's a fairly small staff, and they seem to be collecting more than distributing, but that'll change soon enough. It always does.

Then PWP sees the tag sitting with her back resting against the bar, dark eyes scanning the room assessingly. PWP grins brightly and heads over.

"PWP," Bechdel Test Pass greets dryly as PWP slides into the empty seat next to hers. "Took you long enough."

Heads up, fandom! by sineala
If you have a Delicious account hanging around that you haven't checked in a while, it might be worth it to swing by your user page and check that it's not displaying your REAL NAME in GIANT LETTERS right there on the page.

[[TO REMOVE YOUR NAME, YOU HAVE TO OVERWRITE IT WITH A SUBSTITUTE AND SAVE]]

I never thought I'd have to tag something deliciousfail again. Also, I looked to the FAQ to figure out how to deactivate--they say it's in the Tools setting. Yeah, no.

astolat | Anything For Love (Thor/Loki, Fandom, epic feels)
This is our Vividcon 2012 premiere vid which we enter in the category of... best documentary. The VVC audience summarized it as "Dubconned into feels," which pretty much is both the story of this vid and fannish life in general.

Oh man, so I finished this with both tears in my eyes and a big :D on my face--I'M SORRY BIG SMILES MAKE ME TEAR UP, IT'S A PROBLEM--because, yep. Accuracy tag. I love fandom so much.

may the fourth - irnan - The Avengers (2012), Marvel Avengers Movies Universe [Archive of Our Own]
So there's this project Tony has been working on since he was ten years old which is only marginally less awesome than the specs for the TARDIS he totally could have built if Fury would've just let him had the Tesseract for a couple hours longer.

The beginning's a little rocky, but once it gets into the geekery and the dialogue, it is endless fun.

Fanfic Symposium: When Worlds Collide
But you know, that should not be a problem. It should not be seen as "anti-male" to admit that I'm mostly writing for other women. And we shouldn't have to keep fighting for the spaces that, I have to say yet again, we made for ourselves. And we really, really shouldn't feel any need to apologize for having made those spaces for our interests, and made them to reflect our interests. Seriously, can we stop that? This is not oppression. It is not male-bashing. It is simply a lack of male privilege, and that? Is not a bad thing.

I've read this so many times, often accidentally, and now I am finally saving it.

cypher: Yuletide, the AO3, and my own little modding corner
I worry that the decisions being made for Yuletide are going to increase that reluctance at my end of fandom: the eligibility criteria this year (AO3 presence alone) suggest that a fandom doesn't "count" for YT purposes unless it's housed there, that other fannish production and thriving communities aren't worth consideration. And "prove yourself to us by showing up to our space [instead of just sticking to the places where you already have friends]" is not generally a sentiment that gets a lot of positive reactions in fandom. Hell, in human interactions in general.

wistfuljane | Not A Love Song
Western centricism and imperialism dominate fandom and the message being sent by yuletide, OTW and fandom as a community for me is this: adopt this Western-centric point of view of what it is to be a fan and a fandom, conform to this Western media fandom method of fannish participation, be this Western media fan, for the good of the community and all; otherwise, the community don't need you. It is an insidious message similar to the ones that permeate my life and those who lived similar experiences and we're tired of it even as we try to conform and rebel.

Important. As someone who flits around on the fringes of fandom, without participating as a writer, I didn't have the background on this for it to read concretely, if that makes sense; it read, on the first read-through, like a lot of abstractions--that I just didn't have the toe-holds for. However, wistfuljane's writing is full of embedded links, so the source/clarifying material is there, one just has to be willing to go out and read it.

seanan_mcguire: I know a little girl and her name is Mary Mac: The Misuse of Mary Sue.
Mary Sue is a problem in a piece of fanfic. But if she's in her own story, if she's on her own stage, she can still be implausible, overly perfect, annoying, and unlikeable. What she isn't is an actual Mary Sue; what she isn't doing is warping the story to suit herself. She is the story, and that changes everything.

FAVORITE. FOREVER.
