Alexa can wake up more of your smart home devices
You can certainly use Amazon's Alexa to turn on some devices, but that support is frequently limited. What if a device is in a low-power state and won't respond to your hue and cry? Amazon now has a solution. via Pocket

Amazon asked to share Echo data in US murder case • BBC News
<p>A judge in the US has asked Amazon to hand over audio recordings from an Amazon Echo which was in a house where two women died.
Their bodies were found under the porch of a home in New Hampshire with multiple stab wounds.

The man accused of their murder has pleaded not guilty and is due to stand trial next year.

Amazon said it would not hand over any data about the device without a legally-binding instruction.

The judge had also requested any additional data, such as which devices were paired with it at the time the women were attacked in January 2017.

Amazon told the Associated Press it would not hand over anything "without a valid and binding legal demand properly served on us".

Last year the tech giant did agree to hand over data from an Echo that may have been operating at the time of a murder in Arkansas - but only after the defendant consented.</p>

This is going to become standard operating procedure for police forces very quickly. And that's before you get to Nest devices, proximity sensors and so on.

Sonos One seen as "Smart Home" device, not "Alexa enabled" device | Sonos Community
(On the limitations of Sonos’s Alexa implementation:)
“This limitation means you cannot use the Alexa simplified room lighting/device controls.

“For example, if within the Family Room you create an Alexa group consisting of the Alexa Echo physically in that room, along with the lights in that room, say ‘Couch Lamp’, ‘Ceiling Light’, and ‘Spot Light’, then when you are in that particular room and speak to the Alexa in that room, you can say ‘Alexa, Lights on’ instead of ‘Alexa, Family Room Lights On’, or worse, having to ask for each light individually, by name, to be turned on.

“This is particularly useful when you have multiple Alexa devices in multiple rooms. With the ‘smart grouping’, you can walk into any room and say ‘Alexa, lights on’ and the appropriate, pre-selected set of lights for that room, turns on without having to remember the unique names of the lights in that particular room.

“The problem is that with Sonos ONE not being recognized as an ‘Alexa-enabled device’ you cannot replace an existing Alexa with a Sonos ONE in a particular room and continue having the same capability. That sort of defeats the whole purpose of using a Sonos ONE as a ‘superset’ of a regular Alexa for voice commands but with much better sound. Now you have to give up existing convenience if you want better sound, you can’t have both.”

Amazon Alexa's Whisper Mode Live in U.S. | PYMNTS.com
A couple of weeks after teasing Amazon Alexa’s ability to whisper back to voice commands, the feature is now live.
According to a report citing Amazon, the feature is now live in the U.S. Currently, it only works in the U.S. with English. Amazon is betting this Alexa feature will come in handy at bedtime or at night, when a person is trying to keep a quiet environment, and for parents who don’t want to wake a child with a loud voice command or response from Alexa.
Whisper Mode is one of a bevy of features Amazon is developing for Alexa. At a September event, the eCommerce giant also announced Alexa Guard, which is a sound detection system that enables Alexa to recognize the sounds of smoke alarms, carbon monoxide alarms and glass breaking, the outlet reported.
