Eating a donut is an integral part of my career celebration process.

Years ago, I found that whenever something awesome happened in my career – maybe I got published, or promoted, or launched a project – I wouldn’t take the time to celebrate the achievement. I’m an achiever by nature, the kind who feels like every day starts at zero. Not deliberately marking these moments left me feeling like I wasn’t actually accomplishing anything. “Oh cool, that A List Apart article went up,” I would think, then move on with my day.

Once I realized that this was happening, I decided to be deliberate about marking achievements by eating one donut. Well, sometimes more than one, if it’s a really big deal. The act of donut-eating has actually helped me feel like I’m accomplishing my career goals. As I started to share this idea with more people, I found that it resonated with others, especially young career-driven women who are routinely achieving goals and furthering their career but don't take the time to note their own success.

I decided to start celebrating in a public way so that more people may be inspired to find their own ways of marking their career achievements. These are those donuts.

Sour Cream Old-Fashioned Donuts -
These are great, and with a few tweaks, I think they could be even better. Crumb is great, flavor is good. I added a pinch of nutmeg, and next time I would add more. I followed weight measurements listed in recipe. Dunking the hot doughnuts in the glaze makes the glaze set up quickly.

For the glaze, I omitted the sour cream and added a little more salt and Penzey's cinnamon.

Unfortunately, the fryer oil taste was very strong (used canola from Costco).

Made these with Zach 5/18. They were delicious!

I used recipe ingredients as listed (16oz water/ 1.5oz butter/ 1oz sugar/ 1 tsp vanilla/ ½ tsp sea salt/ 8.5oz AP flour/ 2 eggs), but followed my own technique:

Boiled water, butter, sugar, vanilla, and salt.
Transfered to bowl of stand mixer with paddle.
Added flour on low speed.
Beat on medium speed until temp dropped to 140-160ºF.
Added eggs one at a time, scraping bowl down as needed.
Mixed until glossy.
Piped directly into large dutch oven with oil @ 375ºF using ateco 876 large star tip.
Patted off excess oil and rolled in cinnamon sugar.
Kept in 200ºF oven in hopes that the insides would firm up a bit (they didn't really).

Our only complaint was that the insides were a little eggy/soft, whereas we prefer chewy. Maybe fry them in 350ºF oil next time? Increase flour or use only one egg?
