In this semi-AU (the supernatural exists and John is seeking revenge on the thing that killed Mary), children go through designation testing at age 10 to determine their optimum role in society and begin training along paths of education tailored specifically towards reinforcing their designation and where they fit in society. The designation scoring is on a scale of -10 to +10 – the negative end of the scale is submissive and the positive end is dominant, with dead center being neither and both, a switch.

In Dean’s case, maybe the high respect and natural obedience he showed towards his uber dominant father was misinterpreted as submissive. Or maybe it was the learned tendency to distrust any authority figure other than his father that had him withdrawn and unresponsive during the testing, which the evaluator put down as cowering before a more dominant designation (the evaluator’s designation was mid-scale). Whatever the reason or reasons, the evaluator designates that Dean is a -9 and then convinces John how difficult it would be to raise such a needy, dependent submissive but that fortunately, the state offers self-funded long term submissive training and job placement.
