Would-be CIA chief Panetta denounces waterboarding as torture - Los Angeles Times
Obama's nominee takes a strong stand against the agency's counter-terrorism methods, including rendition of suspects, in a confirmation hearing marked by pointed exchanges over Bush policies. "Nobody is above the law." Panetta's comments were the most forceful denunciation to date of the CIA's methods by a member of Obama's intelligence team. The hearing was marked by pointed exchanges over Bush administration counter-terrorism policies. At one point, Panetta took a verbal shot at former Vice President Dick Cheney, who suggested in an interview this week that Obama's decisions to close the Guantanamo Bay detention camp and to ban harsh interrogation methods risked the nation's security."I was disappointed by those comments," Panetta said. "The implication is that somehow this country is more vulnerable to attack because the president of this country wants to abide by the law and the Constitution."

Feinstein says 'all systems are go' for Panetta's CIA confirmation - Los Angeles Times
President-elect Barack Obama on Wednesday secured the support of Sen. Dianne Feinstein (D-Calif.) for his choice to head the CIA, significantly improving the odds that former California congressman Leon E. Panetta will be the next chief of the spy service. Feinstein, who as chairwoman of the Senate Intelligence Committee will preside over Panetta’s confirmation hearing, said Wednesday that she had spoken with Panetta by phone and that she would support his confirmation. Panetta, who previously served as chief of staff to President Clinton, is expected to play a key role in carrying out Obama’s pledge to dismantle controversial CIA programs launched by President Bush, including the use of harsh interrogation methods on terrorism suspects. Panetta would report to Dennis C. Blair, a retired Navy admiral tapped by Obama to serve as the director of national intelligence, a position that oversees the CIA and the other 15 agencies that comprise the U.S. intelligence community.
