The Descent from Summit Part 1 – Emma Burnett
Great piece on the Code for America Summit. Have to say I agree with the idea that civic technologists can be more involved with spreading the message that government can be good (and explain how!).

America Is Not a Democracy | The Atlantic
I'm normally cautious about The Atlantic, but found myself agreeing with a couple of the points about "a new set of political institutions".

Flood Fault Circuit Interrupter Could Save Lives @ Hackaday
What if you didn’t have to risk your life to disconnect the power during a catastrophic storm? That’s a question many people in Houston were asking themselves as they watched water from Hurricane Harvey and other storms surge through the streets, swell in the gutters, and flood their homes.

Among these Houstonians were engineering students [Jon] and [Cyrus Jyan]. They watched as homeowners fought to safely disconnect their homes from the power grid and said, it shouldn’t have to be this way. They designed the Flood Fault Circuit Interrupter to monitor target areas and disconnect the power automatically when a credible threat is detected.

Manhattan's newest luxury building has the air-purifying power of 500 trees — Quartzy
Pureti works by breaking down contaminants clogging Manhattan’s air via a photocatalytic process that transforms polluting particles into oxidizing agents. They’re then released into the atmosphere as harmless minerals. This process happens super fast—like millions-of-times-per-second fast—so that the surface is perpetually self-cleaning, minimizing operational costs for the building.

The system takes pictures that are turned into high-contrast monochrome images. Those high contrast images are then reproduced on the glass using special LEDs.

This Start-Up [Propel] Says It Wants to Fight Poverty. A Food Stamp Giant [Conduent] Is Blocking It.
But in the last few months, the Propel app has been hobbled or become unavailable in many states, sometimes for weeks. Behind the slowdown is a big government contractor, Conduent, which runs the food stamp networks in 25 states, including New York, California and Pennsylvania. In those states, where 60 percent of Propel’s users live, Conduent maintains the database that Propel’s app uses to let people check their accounts.
