SF State Holds Fundraising Event at Masonic Auditorium
SAN FRANCISCO CHRONICLE -- I was at the bar at Sam’s the other night, watching TV, when KPIX-TV sportscaster Dennis O’Donnell appeared on the screen from the annual San Francisco State awards fundraiser at the Masonic Auditorium.

“I just hope Willie Brown gets here on time, because you know he is always late,” O’Donnell said.

With that, I was out the door and up the hill to join my fellow alumni.

Alum Ben Baller is the Go-To Jeweler for Your Favorite Celebs, Rappers
THE HUNDREDS -- Having spent five years in San Francisco, the city where he graduated from college (SF State), the IF and Company founder recognizes that even though the cost of living up north is higher than Beverly Hills, you won’t find the same levels of clout up there. Littered with Ferraris, Rolls Royces and Lamborghinis, 90210 is the destination for anybody who’s become famous by entertaining or by using “the apps” — YouTube, Instagram, Vine, Snapchat, etc. — a phenomenon we see all too often.

What most people may not know is that Ben started out in the music industry, deejaying and even producing for Dr. Dre. However, those days were never as fulfilling as being able to work for himself and call his own shots. Now, he’s created custom jewelry pieces for artists spanning many music genres and generations, from Drake and Kanye West to John Mayer and Justin Bieber.

International Conference at SF State Brings Iranian American Diaspora Together
SF WEEKLY -- It’s no coincidence that SFSU is hosting. The conference is put on by the University’s Center for Iranian Diaspora Studies, the first academic institution of its kind. In November, SFSU announced the center, along with its Documentary Film Institute, would produce “We Are Here, We Have Always Been Here” to document the Bay Area’s Iranian diaspora — another first.

“I want to sort of show that it’s not a homogenous community. It’s not just the post-1979 upper class,” says Persis Karim, “We Are Here” co-director and the center’s director. “It’s about the Bay Area and the way the Bay Area has influenced them, as much as they’ve influenced the Bay Area.”

Alum Juan Alvarado Valdivia Paints Short, Pithy Portraits of Latinos in 'Ballad of a Slopsucker'
SAN JOSE MERCURY NEWS -- The title tale, “Slopsucker,” is the story of a Bay Area man of Peruvian heritage stepping tentatively into his 10-year high-school reunion at Horatio’s restaurant in San Leandro. He’s a headbanger turned head hanger, full of regret for lost loves, lost friendships and feeling about as low as his band name suggests.

It’s one of 12 very different stories, many involving regret — perhaps a way of working through his own Catholic guilt, Alvarado Valdivia says with a wry laugh. Most are set in the East Bay, and they’re all assembled in a very intentional order — kind of a “mix tape” of themes, he says, with everything from love, family and masculinity to workplace weirdness and adventures on BART. And while there’s humor and hope, most of the stories land on the serious side.

Born to Peruvian parents in Guadalajara, Mexico, Alvarado Valdivia grew up in Fremont. He received a Bachelor of Arts degree in Cinema from San Francisco State University and has a master’s in creative writing from Saint Mary’s College.

Professor McBride Discusses Classic Film 'It Happened One Night'
BBC -- It happened one night in February 1935 that a film, that had been largely ignored by the critics, romped for the first time in Oscar history to all five top awards. In this final program in the current series, Paul Gambaccini tells the story of the triumph of “It Happened One Night.”

Joseph McBride, professor of Cinema at San Francisco State University, wrote the definitive biography on director Frank Capra. McBride discusses the social significance of “It Happened One Night.”

“It was about class issues — about a working-class newspaperman who’s stuck with a snooty heiress who’s running away from wealth,” McBride says. “[Screenwriter Robert] Riskin, one of his themes was, the point is that the heroine doesn’t want all the money; they want freedom. And that appealed to the [Great] Depression audience.”
