The Steadfastness of Stars - by itsnatalie
Even from space, Jadis was white. Spock had to channel his revulsion into something more productive.

“Goddamn,” remarked Dr. McCoy, staring through the window of the ship at the faintly glowing planet, scowling. “That looks like a bucket of problems waiting to happen. If you get hypothermia or pneumonia, Jim, I’m not clearing you for duty for weeks. Weeks, do you hear me? Plural.”

“Cheer up, Bones,” said Jim from where he was scanning an information database. Spock was at his right, patiently waiting: he’d already memorized all pertinent sections. “I know somebody from this planet. She’s since become a Starfleet ambassador, she’ll be waiting for us.”

“What exactly is their issue, anyway?” Dr. McCoy was still scowling, and Spock privately agreed with the sentiment.

As Jim was still reading, Spock volunteered, “Their planet has experienced subzero temperatures for a period of over a thousand years, and as such, the way of life of the people of Jadis has become dependent on just this phenomenon. Over the last several weeks, however, the temperatures have begun altering alarmingly, and since they fail to fall within the parameters of observed anomalies, have begun to cause structural and ecological damage to the point of concerning permanence.”

“Their weather is changing? What’s happening?”

“It’s warming up, Bones,” said Jim, flicking through his PADD as they walked; Spock was tempted to take Jim’s shoulder and steer him just so he wouldn’t collide with people or objects. “They might have summer and that might literally be the end of the world for them.”

In which Jim finds himself fake-married to his first officer every other month. It's not his fault. Mostly. Dowries and Klingons are involved. Starfleet is decidedly not amused.

sparky77: How to Avoid Kicking Puppies and Other Valuable Lessons in Leadership
“I can’t be an authority figure,” Jim clarifies, spitting the last two words out like they’re the worst thing he’s ever had to consider.

McCoy starts laughing. Screw work. This is much more entertaining. “Children acting up?”

Kirk slouches in his chair and sighs. McCoy will give him this; the man is a champion at slouching. There’s something about the way he slouches that seems to be saying, ‘I could be sitting straight, but the universe just couldn’t handle the awesomeness of me being fully upright in this chair.’ It’s a lot to say in just the way he sits. It’s impressive.

McCoy nods. “It happens when you don’t establish proper boundaries. Or when things aren’t stable at home. Have you been fighting with Spock again? The children don’t like it when Mommy and Daddy fight.”

“Funny,” Kirk says and then frowns. “Wait… which one of us is which?”

“Oh, I think that’s obvious,” McCoy grins.

It really does take a village to raise a Jim.

The members of the Kelvin's crew watch over Jim as much as he lets them.

Ship Leave - by KiaraSayre
"It was supposed to be a courier mission," says Pike. "Not even diplomatic – not really, just a semi-formal reception." He looks pointedly at Jim, and waves his hand as though bequeathing the rest of the story to him.

Jim reminds himself that cursing out a superior would probably be a bad career move, and he keeps his eyes away from Pike or his mother as he speaks. "It turns out that Jallidarians have – well, had – a small but, uh, enthusiastic isolationist faction. Militant isolationist faction, I should say. They got the drop on us right after we'd delivered the paperwork – me, Bones, and Spock. The rest of the away team got away, at least." He clears his throat to cover his hesitancy – he's still not entirely sure how far he's going to go with this story. "They had us for three days, before Sulu and everyone else managed to track us down and extract us, but the extraction was – messy. I got a little stabbed." There – everything he said, completely true. Honest? No. But true, at least, and peripheral details shouldn't matter too much.

He glances at Pike. Spock's report, no doubt, was perfectly clear and precise, without a minute unaccounted for. But Pike says nothing about Jim's omissions, just purses his lips thoughtfully, and Jim decides it's time to change the subject.

"Here's the hydroponics lab - "

They don't linger too long, there – the lab is full of technicians, some sent from the spacedock to help prepare the massive quantities of fresh fruits and vegetables for the Winter Reception, all of whom look overworked and underpaid.

The bridge ends up being the last stop, and Jim, in an unusual display of tact, manages to make their destination perfectly clear in advance, in case former-Captain Pike should want to avoid it. Pike makes no move to do so, however, and they all pack into the turbolift together.

the ship in port is the safer one (but it's not the reason it was made) by KiaraSayre
The Enterprise's first mission is a boring one. Luckily, the ship more or less makes its own trouble, including: stills, toilet paper, lighting issues, awkward crewmembers, lunchroom seating politics, and, of course, the Admiralty.

annenburg: Pre and Post-Pubescence
It was all just puberty. Fucking puberty, and it’d be over soon.

At least, that was what Jim had to keep telling himself. Chekov was bypassing his work in favor of ogling Spock again, and really, it had been funny at first. Of all the people for him to like – Spock? It put a whole new definition on ‘hormone laden’, as far as Jim was concerned.

Still, it was rather odd. Whereas Jim’s teenage years had included reckless behavior (in abundance), promiscuity, a general disdain for commitment, alcohol, several attempts at emancipation, a motorcycle, and one horribly misguided and humiliating incident involving a tattoo parlor and three hits off a drug illegal even on Risa, Chekov’s pubescence seemed filled with flowers and adoration and mathematics and other absurd things. The strongest intoxicant he seemed interested in was theoretical warp drive mechanics (which yeah, if you thought too much about could make your head spin in ways even Udura root couldn’t, but still), and instead of getting into shouting matches with his parents, he seemed more prone to file complaints about the voice recognition features of the ship.

Yes, Chekov in puberty was an interesting sight to behold, if only because of how disappointing it was. But once he’d started making eyes at Spock, that was it.
