The Charley Project: Lilawattie Buerattan
"Buerattan was a breeder of exotic birds on a ranch in Loxahatchee, Florida in 1994. She worked with her nephew, Bhagwaniala Lall, who was the birds' primary caregiver. Lall acted as the main businessperson. Their family in Guyana had an established business importing wild birds, but Lall and Buerattan began breeding the birds instead when the United States tightened laws regarding imports in 1993. (..)
A feed delivery person made a routine stop at their ranch on June 5, 1994. No one greeted the worker at the gate, which was unusual. He knew that Lall and Buerattan did not stock reserve feed for the birds, so the worker left the boxes at the gate. The feed was unclaimed when he returned the following day and he alerted authorities. Investigators did not search the ranch until June 16, 1994, ten days after Lall and Buerattan's absences were reported, due to a bureaucratic error. Authorities discovered hundreds of birds dead or dying of starvation inside the ranch when the search was finally initiated. There was no sign of Buerattan or her nephew. Their ranch hands, Daljeet Gobin and Roland Felix Eyoum, were also missing. Investigators determined that there was approximately $700,000 worth of wild birds inside the ranch. Authorities said it appeared that the property's occupants had been interrupted by unknown individual(s) prior to their disappearances."

The Charley Project: Edward Ryan Makua Hanai Aikau
"No one drowned during Aikau's shift. It has been established that he saved dozens of lives at the beach, but he failed to file many lifesaving reports. It is believed that Aikau saved many more beachgoers. The phrase "Eddie Would Go" became popular around Waimea Bay and elsewhere during the early 1970s, as Aikau gained a reputation for jumping into any perilous situation."

The Charley Project: Davis Samuel Cortez Jr.
"Cortez was last seen between 12:30 and 1:00 a.m. on April 15, 2000 at the Amfac/JMB Lihue Plantation sugar cane processing plant in Lihue, Hawaii. He worked there at night, oiling and maintaining plantation equipment. When other employees went looking for Cortez, they found his midnight snack, coffee mug, keys, and street clothes in the break room and his car in the employee parking lot. There was no sign of Cortez himself, however.
Cortez's family speculated that he fell or was pushed into the cane-crushing equpiment inside the factory. A shredded green shirt and a mangled rubber work boot in Cortez's size were found in a cane juice extracting machine near the factory the day after his disappearance, but the crime lab couldn't find any blood on the boot."

The Charley Project: Torey Clarke Newlin
"He traveled to Hawaii with a group of students on February 12, 2002 for a seven-day vacation. They planned to attend a String Cheese Incident concert in Lahaina four days later. Newlin's mother said that her son attended over 100 of the group's shows since 2000. Newlin normally juggled orange and green glow balls during the concerts, making him familiar to other fans.
Newlin's friends told authorities that he took a large dose of LSD at approximately 8:00 p.m. on February 16. His group gathered at the Lahaina Civic Center prior to the String Cheese Incident's concert. Newlin became disoriented immediately after taking the drug. He approached a security guard and repeated the phrase "I don't know where I am" before running out of the building. He left his wallet, backpack and cellular phone inside the facility."

The Charley Project: John Stephen Kozma
"Kozma was last seen in Phoenix, Arizona on November 20, 1996. It's unclear why he left his trailer home near 27th Avenue and Osborn Road, but he may have gone into the Superstition Mountains to look for gold: he left behind a handwritten note that read, "Gold-panning trip." Kozma has no known living relatives; it was his senior dancing group that reported him missing. He has never been heard from again. Few details are available in his case."

"In January 1961, Bennie wrote to Diane's mother in a response to a letter she'd sent him. Bennie said he hadn't seen or heard from his wife in a long time. The last time he'd seen her was when he gave her $100 and put her on a bus to visit her parents at their home in Kingman, Arizona. He said she wrote him once after that to say she had been pregnant but had miscarried. He never heard from her again after that."

The Charley Project: Kristen Deborah Modafferi
"Modafferi was an industrial design major at North Carolina State University in 1997. She arrived in San Francisco, California on June 1, 1997 to attend a summer photography course at the University Of California at Berkeley. She was employed part-time at the former Spinelli's coffee shop (now called Tully's Coffee) at the Crocker Galleria in San Francisco's financial district during the work week. Modafferi worked at Cafe Musee in the San Francisco Museum Of Modern Art during the weekends. She lived with a roommate on Jayne Avenue in Oakland, California at the time, and was also taking a dance class.
Modafferi asked a co-worker at Spinelli's for directions to Baker Beach, which is located next to Land's End Beach, on June 23, 1997. Her shift ended at 3:00 p.m. that day, but Modafferi was seen approximately 45 minutes later on the Crocker Galleria's second floor with an unidentified blonde woman. (..)
The unidentified blonde woman with Modafferi has never been located. (..)
Modafferi's personal belongings were searched and a newspaper personal advertisement from the San Francisco area was among her possessions. The advertisement contained the following message: FRIENDS: Female seeking friends to share activities, who who enjoy music, photography, working out, walks, coffee, or simply the beach, exploring the Bay area! Interested, call me."

The Charley Project: Derek Adam Seehausen
"He withdrew $200 money from an ATM in Los Angeles at approximately 10:30 p.m. It's unusual of him to carry that much cash. At 11:54 p.m. he used his smart phone to make a payment to a friend for $2,999. The friend had loaned him the money for school tuition. He was last seen at 12:02 a.m. on August 6, walking northbound on Alvarado Street. This is the last sign of him.

The Charley Project: Gertrude Vreeland Tompkins Silver
"Gertrude's father, Vreeland Tompkins, founded Smooth-On Inc. in New Jersey. She was raised as the youngest child in their family and had a stuttering problem when she was young. (..) Gertrude fell in love with an American aviator who was killed during World War II in the early 1940s. Her loved ones believed that she developed an interest in flying after his death. Gertrude took private flying lessons, then joined the Women's Airforce Service Pilots (WASPs) shortly thereafter. (..) Gertrude married Henry M. Silver in September 1944. The marriage came as a surprise to her family members, who believed that she may have felt sorry for him at the time. Henry's sister died after giving birth out of wedlock and he was preparing to adopt her child in 1944. He had known Gertrude for several years prior to their wedding and some believed that she was still mourning for the her lost aviator at the time of their marriage. Her father adored Henry and thought of him as a son. Gertrude returned to WASP duty two days after the wedding; she and Henry never saw each other again. She was not wearing her engagement or wedding rings when she departed for Texas, nor did she use her married name. (..) Gertrude was scheduled to fly a P-51 Mustang fighter plane from Mines Field in Inglewood, California (now the Los Angeles International Airport, or "LA X") to Palm Springs, California on October 26, 1944. A photo of a similiar aircraft is posted below this case summary. (..) Gertrude taxied to one side of the runway prior to her departure to have her cockpit hatch repaired. She apparently departed from Mines Field at approximately 4:00 p.m. that day, but her flight records were lost and there is no recorded time for her takeoff. The tower and air traffic controllers had no copies of her flight plans for the day. She was not reported as missing until October 30, four days after her presumed disappeatance. The military initiated an extensive search for Gertrude and her plane, but no evidence of a suspected crash was ever discovered."

The Charley Project: Jason Lewis Kyles
"Kyles, who has a history of seasonal depression, had been exhibitingly increasingly bizarre behavior prior to his disappearance: he couldn't sleep, talked very fast, became hyperactive and fixated on religion, and bought an expensive top hat that he wore during walks along the river. A few days later he packed his Ford pickup truck with miscellaneous objects including a bird bath, some photos and his son's guitar. He drove away from his Sacramento, California home, leaving a note for his wife saying he was going to visit a cousin in New York and would make a fortune in the music industry. He was wearing a heavy tan canvas hunting jacket, a t-shirt, blue jeans, black and orange sneakers and a tan baseball cap.
The next morning, Sonoma County authorities found his truck parked near Lawndale Road and Annadel, parked on private property just outside the eastern border of Annadel State Park. The local resident whose land it was found him in her barn sometime after 9:00 a.m., where he was crying and saying the horses were sad. Later, a cyclist reported seeing him in the park, naked and chanting. His discarded clothing and shoes were later discovered in the woods, with the tags torn off each item and Christmas ornaments and refrigerator magnets in the pockets."
