The Holiday Ten - Chapter 5 - sunryder
John was 87% sure that the SGC hadn’t actually hired Bilbo Baggins, Rodney had just forged the paperwork and no one wanted to ask questions. Honestly, John wouldn’t have been surprised if Rodney had sent a team of Marines to tranq the good doctor, and had them pack up everything he owned while he was unconscious and ship him off to the Pegasus galaxy without actually asking Bilbo if he actually wanted to come. Bilbo was a friendly enough sort of guy that John figured the man would’ve just huffed at the bad planning, then got right back to work, not caring at all about the change in location.

Summary: The thing Gandalf neglected to mention when he assured Thorin Oakenshield and Company that Bilbo Baggins of Bag End would be the perfect thief for their mission was this:

A Hobbit wouldn't be able to tell a diamond from a pearl, or from an Arkenstone - no matter how hard they try.

This leads to some confusion, on Bilbos part. And some frustration, again on Bilbos part.

(What sort of a description was 'heart of the mountain', anyway? A useless one, that's what.)

Disappearing Act
Summary: n Erebor, Bilbo Baggins thinks about disappearing. But he gets distracted by Kili and Fili and their mother Dis and by Thorin Oakenshield, King Under the Mountain, sleeping, healing, and listening to Bilbo's words.

|| Bilbo often found himself touching the ring, checking it was still in his waistcoat pocket. He hadn’t put it on since the end of the battle, since Thorin had been carried into the Mountain, to the healing rooms. His thoughts had been consumed by Thorin since the words they’d exchanged when Thorin had believed himself dying. Thorin who lay so still now.

But the temptation was strong sometimes - to disappear, to avoid all the Dwarvish eyes that always seemed to be looking at him. They looked at him as though they wanted him gone, as though they blamed him for what had happened to Thorin, and Bilbo lowered his eyes and tried not to trip, his hand sliding into his pocket, thinking about Hobbiton and Bag End and his lovely Hobbit clothes that fit him perfectly and the beautiful hollyhocks in bloom and..

Under mountain, under stone...
The day Thorin was born his parents thought he was cursed. Not for a mark on his skin or a evil spell, but because of that damn bird on the windowsill in front of his crib. He was a huge black raven, so old the end of his ruined feathers have turned somehow gray. He was menacing, ugly looking, and Thorin’s mother tried everything to get him away from the chamber. But the bird wouldn’t budge, he stayed still for days, months, just looking down and Thorin while he grew up. Only one time he spoke in front of others, when the five years old prince asked him his name; “Carc” he had answered with a strained voice. Carc became a permanent fixture and, eventually, everyone just accepted him because he didn’t seem to have bad intention.

as sunshine falls on the wretched
Summary: Bilbo Baggins, the newly appointed Master of Bag End, has just reached his majority. He lives alone in his fine house, managing his estate, and ignoring the people of Hobbiton as much as they avoid him. When a storm lands him with an unexpected (and unwelcome) little visitor, all Bilbo wants to do is find the baby Dwarf's missing family so he can get back to his own life.

That's not what happens.

|| Bilbo was thirty-three. A momentous occasion, to a Hobbit, marking the transition from the irresponsible tweens to the true beginning of adulthood. He was an adult, and a gentlehobbit, and possessed, if truth be told, of more money and property than he knew what to do with.

He was also sulking.

It wasn’t hard to blame him, honestly - at least he didn’t think so, but he might be biased. All of his relations, the pitiful handful that there were, had turned up early in the evening for the formality of the occasion - and to receive presents, of course - and now Bilbo was alone in his home. It truly was his now, though the transfer of legal ownership had been a mere formality. He’d had the management of Bag End since he was only twenty-nine, and had surprised the adults by his careful handling of the estate’s affairs. The money had only grown under his careful (some might say tight-fisted) management.

For a half a Took, they whispered carefully, he seemed to be doing well.

They didn’t dare say such things to his face.

Summary: Among the craftspeople's stalls, Thorin Oakenshield finds an unexpected kindred spirit. Pre-canon.

|| Market days in the towns of Ered Luin where Dwarves resided saw the emergence of the Dwarves from craft and hearth, from forge and study and beds for the old and feeble, to a bustle of crowds and to stalls where jewels twinkled in the mountain sunlight. In old Gabilgathol, where crumbling buildings of the First Age surrounded the newer homes of Broadbeams, Firebeards, and refugees of Erebor alike, market stalls made the center of the old city shine with colorful food and crafts.

Summary: Perhaps this was their gift, their treasure, the light in the darkness after losing so much.

|| Tauriel came in from the snow and shook her head, scattered snowflakes everywhere. Hearing a giggle that sounded suspiciously like her daughter, she followed the sound until she came to Thorin’s sitting room, and was not surprised in the slightest to see her babe with her little fingers buried in Thorin’s thick hair, making messy braids and laughing at the curls.

"She’s very fond of you," Tauriel murmured, smiling, and Elin whipped around with a huge grin.

Her Mother's Daughter
Summary: Bella Baggins has her mother's wanderlust and her father's business sense. We all know how the trip to the Lonely Mountain ought to go...

|| Bella Baggins, as the whole Shire knows, inherited a full share of her infamous mother’s personality, her wanderlust and Tookish love of adventure. But it is impossible for even the stuffiest matron to deny that Bella Baggins also inherited her father’s reliable steadiness and impeccable business sense; and so it is that when Bella Baggins is thirty-three and finally ready to make her very first solo trip out of the Shire, she returns from Rivendell having not only spent three months among the elves, but also having forged a remarkable trade agreement in order to sell the excess produce of the spice gardens which her father so foresightedly planted in the fields around Bag End. The agreement makes her very rich indeed inside of ten years, and her proud father goes to his grave swearing up and down that his daughter is a better businessman than he; her mother, equally proud, watches Bella set out each year with the caravans and wipes away happy tears to see her daughter blossom so.

Hearts Will As Hearts Must
Summary: The Dwarves are returning to Erebor reclaimed, and the elves uphold their promise to safeguard the caravans as they pass through Mirkwood.

One particular Dwarf has wit and spark enough to match Legolas Greenleaf - perhaps even outmatch him.

It's hate at first sight.

|| “Quiet!”

“I am being quiet! This is as quiet as we get!”

“And yet you still speak, and you crash through the trees as though you were a herd of Oliphaunts! Do you mean to run into every single one?” Legolas growled, and he rubbed at his forehead. There was a tension headache building just behind his eyes. Why had he offered to scout ahead again?

Oh yes, that was it. He had wanted some respite from the crashing, noisy, foul-mouthed and foul-natured Dwarves. They moved in slow, stately procession through the Greenwood now, returning to the seat of their old Kingdom. Elves had been set to guide and guard every wagon and train, to ensure their safety and protect their own lands.

But his moment of peace was not to be: not to be outdone, the very worst of the lot had offered to join him. ‘Lightest, swiftest and youngest,’ he remembered the Dwarf saying, his peach-fuzz jaw out-thrust.

Blessings and Rituals
Summary: In which Dwarves have a religion - and Hobbits don’t.

|| It made sense to Bilbo that all Dwarven rituals – if that was really what they were and not just habits – included stone. They were stone workers after all. But he couldn't figure out why. Why so many and what was the purpose of it. And he wasn't quite sure how to ask. So he watched and occasionally jotted the little rituals down in his journal for further contemplation later.

It was the watching that eventually got him his explanation. Óin glanced up at him from piling the stones in his nightly upside-down tower and harrumphed. "It's for protection," he said, piling the stones one by one, smallest on the bottom, then the next smallest, and the next, until the biggest one came on top. "I'm asking for Mahal's protection for the camp and for the night. If the tower holds, the camp is protected – if it tips over, it isn't safe."

"Ah," Bilbo said, frowning. He hadn't even considered that it might have to do with gods and such, but it made sense. "That's why Thorin had us switch camps a few days back."

|| Listen, but that would be an AMAZING way to kick Thorin out of goldsickness.

The Becoming of Bilbo Baggins
Summary: This was why Hobbits did not leave the shelter of the Shire. The world outside was a Dark place where you would only starve and starve until you broke, until it would be all that remained, like in the Wandering Days, like in the Dark Days.

|| So they'd become Small and they'd became Simple and they made their own food and cooked it well and worshipped it on fine plates and it was good. They had almost became Good themselves and Kind and Fair. But above everything else, they became sated.

But at the heart they were still Fell Things, no amount of Hobbitish joviality and easy life could breed out the darkness that resided on the heart of all their kin. And the Hobbit-form itself was a reminder of it – it had been a Becoming too, one they'd all shared in. Their first joint communal meal – one the things they'd thrown into the pot to make it had never thanked them for.

Heart of the Mountain
Summary: After the Battle of Five Armies, there is still the matter of the Arkenstone and the Lonely Mountain to be settled.

|| "The Heart of the Mountain, huh?" he murmured.

The old Dwarf nodded. "It became synonymous with the king's right to rule," Balin added quietly. "It made Thrór the king he was, for better and for worse. And quite possibly led to his madness. If nothing else, it made the fall all the more swift."

"What will happen if the Arkenstone won't glow for Thorin?" Bilbo asked quietly.

Balin sighed and shook his head. "The fact of the matter is," he murmured. "I'm not sure if he should ever have it at all."

|| The arkenstone chooses the King, and whoops, that fucker is only shining for Bilbo.

Hobbitish Mannerisms
Unsafe Places: Hobbits do not, in general, have records of their time before the settling of the Shire. But some things are known. Some things are held as truth.

One of those, held in the mind of every hobbit before they even have the words to define it, is that fauntlings must be protected at all costs.

So when Bilbo wakes abruptly to a muffled crying, there's nothing for it.

I am Lost to Peace: Tugging his blanket more firmly around his frame, Bilbo pushes himself to his feet and crosses the hall. He shall not sleep tonight. May as well make use of the time.

Ah, there.

He looks at raven hair to his left, then golden to his right. They’re safe. His boys, his nephews. Safe.

Not because of him. Fool.

The Morning Brings No Relief: “Bed rest,” Óin says after a thorough examination. “And plenty of liquids. No arguments.”

Bilbo makes one last-ditch attempt. “You are all overreacting.”

Óin just looks at him severely.

Prompt Post 8 - The Hobbit Kink Meme
The fight doesn’t so much as begin as it ends very, very shortly. The Goblins and Wargs left alive were rather puzzled. For you see, they had been fighting, when quite suddenly, there was a marked End to the battle heralded by a blowing of a horn from some unknown distance at their knees, the sound of crossbows snapping, and their legs decorating the ground quite prettily.

Dwarf Wisdom
Summary: The older dwarves all have no sense of direction above ground. Fíli sees getting lost as a very enviable skill he should try to aquire.

||Fíli grew up surrounded by dwarf wisdom. It had never been explained to him, but since he was a bright child, it soon made perfect sense: it was safe enough to go straight where you wanted to when you were underground, but there was no way of knowing what dangers lurked above ground.

The only way to travel safely with the threatening nothingness of the sky above you was to loop back, zigzag across even terrain and pass certain landmarks from at least three different directions. After all, you needed to throw possible enemies off your trail.

He had seen it work countless times. On one memorable occasion, a pack of orcs chasing them had watched in bewilderment as Dwalin led them in a dizzying pattern across a large forest clearing. After an hour, the orcs had simply shaken their heads and turned away in what Fíli could only assume to be frustration.
