Oxidation
Author's summary: as oil paintings dry, the process is not evaporation as there is no water in the paint to disappear; instead, the oils in the paint are oxidised causing them to harden over years in a process that never really stops.
Reccer's comments: This fic is heartbreaking, and stupendous. The premise is that Sherlock is a famous artist who's commissioned by Harry to paint a portrait of John, who in this AU didn't survive Afghanistan. But then Sherlock starts to see and hear John, who comes alive for him like a modern Galatea and sets a seemingly inevitable series of events in motion. This story has the best tortured artist Sherlock I've read, and the sense of color and emotion and desperation, and the tragedy of Sherlock seeing John but not being able to keep him, make this something haunting and unforgettable. I hurt not only for Sherlock, but for everyone who cared about him too, including Victor, and this story has one of the best versions of him I've read. (The supporting characters in this are excellent.) I liked, too, that the magical realism elements weren't over-explained, and that the author didn't pull punches emotionally. On that note, mind the warnings and bring a hanky; you'll need it, as this is pretty devastating, and I absolutely mean that as a compliment. It's not an easy story, but it's a very good one, and well worth reading for the fantastic writing and the wrenching believability of this Sherlock. It's incredibly visceral, indelible work.

Author's summary: In which John gets a cat and names it Sherlock.
Reccer's comments: This fic was so well done that it made me cry. It's a beautiful character study, and a very moving portrait of John's grief. Cat!Sherlock is perfect, and watching John try to heal from Sherlock's death through looking after his feline namesake is unexpected and poignant. It's a unique and emotionally honest take on post-Reichenbach, and it's really stuck with me.

The Frayed Edge
Author's summary: Lestrade deals with the aftermath of the fall.
Reccer's comments: Told from Lestrade's POV, this is his story of how he had his own fall after Sherlock's. It was written well before S3 aired, so it's not remotely canon, but the opening scene with Sherlock's return is one of the most moving I've read. We see Lestrade struggle with guilt and forgiveness over his role in the fall and we learn how he perceives his friendships with both Sherlock and John. This is Lestrade's story, but he is incredibly insightful when it comes to Sherlock and John's evolving relationship and we are witness to that through his eyes. Mary has a slight presence here; her departure falls more in line with ACD canon. I love everything this author has written and this is no exception. It's intense, sad, maybe even a little grim in spots when we see Lestrade at his lowest, but there is a thread of hope and optimism throughout. When Lestrade bursts into tears at the end, after John asks him an important question, I want to as well. Just a very lovely, moving story.

The Doubtful Comforts of Human Love
Author's summary: Or, The Adventure of the Red Shoes. UK Ballet principal dancer Sherlock Holmes and assistant rugby coach John Watson met and fell in love as ambitious, optimistic teenagers. Twenty years on, they are entering midlife, facing the break-down of their bodies and the ending of their careers, and contemplating what the future holds for two middle-aged men forced to start over. With a frightening crisis unfolding at the Ballet, Sherlock must balance the demands of his career, his friendships, and his marriage with his own struggle against bitterness and discontent, while John takes a long-overdue glance from the outside, in, and stutter-steps toward making a kind of peace. AU - ballet!lock/rugby!john
Reccer's comments: If the ballet!lock/rugby!john note makes you want to nope out, then you are precisely the audience for this fic. This takes all the tropes from the popular AU and blows them out of the water.
I thought this was an especially brave story to write because it doesn’t portray Sherlock and John as an ‘opposites attract’ odd couple who only find true happiness in each other, or star-crossed lovers who are destined to be together. This is a startlingly mature and stark story of two very flawed individuals who struggle with both themselves and each other, and the weight of their shared history. There are some very difficult scenes, emotionally speaking, and I don’t think I’m spoiling anything by saying that there is no fairytale ending. (But it’s hopeful! The author promises it in the tags… ;))
The dance scenes are some of the most powerful ones in the story, but it’s not a prettified, sugarplum version of ballet; it’s tough, gritty, and powerful in a very earthy way, full of sweat, anger, and blood. And speaking of blood…
On top of the frankly masterful study of Sherlock and John’s dual mid-life crises, the author has been bold enough to add a full-fledged casefic, loosely leaning on Hans Christian Andersen’s ‘The Red Shoes’. It’s beautifully (and creepily) done, and is definitely not for the faint of heart.

The Guarded Secret
Author's summary: After his war injury, John feels broken, small, and useless. On a whim, he takes a position as a security guard of sorts at the gorgeous Holmes Hall in Yorkshire. As it turns out, he is not as broken, small, or useless as he thinks. A story of beauty and blossom, murder and mystery, loss and love.
Reccer's comments: This Secret Garden AU was one of my favorite fics of last year. Sherlock and John's growing friendship and love for each other is beautifully done, and the garden as metaphor is just as gorgeous as it was in the original book. This has family secrets, a case very close to Sherlock, well-drawn supporting characters, and Sherlock on a motorcycle, all wrapped up in a Johnlock bow as he and John help each other heal. The slow unfurling of their emotions is lovely to watch, and a pleasure to read.

Sherlock, P.I.
Author's summary: For the Fall TV Sherlock fusion project. Sherlock, P.I. is an American television show that follows the exciting adventures of genius private investigator Sherlock Homes and his friends as they live their lives on the beautiful island of Oahu in Hawaii. Sherlock is a British expatriate, US citizen, and former agent for the US Naval Investigative Agency. His friends include Greg Lestrade, an ex-Navy Investigator and helicopter pilot; Molly Hooper, a former Navy Medical Examiner turned private beach club manager; and Sherlock's brother Mycroft Holmes, majordomo of the Masters Estate and well connected political and social figure. Sherlock solves crimes as he wrestles with the ghosts and demons of his past.
Reccer's comments: Don’t be fooled by the rather soft start: this is a full-on angstfest with a huge plot that takes you from the lush tropical beaches of Hawaii in the 1980s to the treacherous jungles of Viet Nam in the mid-70s and even further into the troubled mind of one Sherlock Holmes. The plot takes nail-biting twists and turns as the past comes back to haunt the present, and everyone has more secrets than they know what to do with. The characters all transfer beautifully to the setting and I was particularly impressed with the interpretations of Molly and Mary. I’m only vaguely familiar with the TV series this is based on, but I had great fun with it anyway. As of this writing, this fic doesn’t have nearly the number of kudos or hits that it’s worth, in my opinion, so whatever it is that’s putting you off from giving this a try, set it aside, grab a pina colada, and settle in on the beach for a great read.

To the Sticking Place (Screw Your Courage series)
Series:http://archiveofourown.org/series/380434
Author's summary: Renowned Shakespearean actor Sherlock Holmes has finally burned all of his bridges in the theatre industry save for his constant director, Greg Lestrade. John Watson has made a name for himself in the musical theatre circuit, but age and injury are working against him. Can they reinvent themselves for an all-male Macbeth without killing one another?
Reccer's comments: There will be inevitable comparisons made between this and Mad_Lori’s Performance in a Leading Role, as the author acknowledges from the outset. To my mind, this fic absolutely stands up to the scrutiny, amply filling the shoes of the classic actors AU. It’s by no means a derivative or a copy, however, standing completely independent on its own considerable merits.
The author writes with authority, familiarity, and an obvious love of the New York theater world, including Broadway, musicals, plays, the Tony Awards, restaurants and other establishments, and many popular personalities from Ian Clarke and Sean Fagan to Neal Patrick Harris and Helen Mirren. This intimacy makes this an absolute pleasure and thrill to read, drawing the reader in emotionally as well as in a very nearly viscerally physical way such that it’s all but impossible to escape the pull of the floorboards and greasepaint.
But brilliant as all of that is, let’s be honest: most of us are probably here for the Johnlock. And that, my friends, is absolutely incendiary. From the moment they meet, their mutual admiration and appreciation is clear to everyone, and I especially liked that the author allowed their relationship to grow and mature through friendship and trust, realistically depicting the potential pitfalls of navigating a publicly scrutinized relationship, even in a segment of society as relatively accepting of homosexuality as this is.
There are a couple of touches of angst as both Moriarty and Mary are allowed a chance to try and wreak their havoc, but I don’t think I’m spoiling anything by saying that in the end, no hearts are broken or burnt, and even though all the world’s a stage, these characters are not just players but as real and vivid as the affection and love they have for each other, and we for them. Truly a tour de force offering.

Homo Faber
Author's summary: In which Sherlock's mother's maiden name is Frankenstein and Dr Watson has been invalided home towards the end of the Napoleonic Wars... What if Dr Frankenstein had had Dr Watson to keep him right? Excerpt: “We are all egoists,” he said. “Every child likes to hear the story of his beginnings, the tale of his parents’ courtship, the events surrounding his birth, the parts of his story he cannot know himself.”
Reccer's comments: It's hard to pick just one of saki101's works to recommend this month, but here we go. This is a lovely variation on the Frankenstein tale which turns the novel's original themes on their head by dwelling on the wonder and beauty of Dr. Frankenstein's victory over death rather than on its unnaturalness or horror. Saki101 sets the scene on the beautiful grounds of a hospital and sanitorium where Dr. Watson joins forces with Sherlock Holmes to heal the wounded minds and bodies of traumatized veterans returning from the Napoleonic Wars. Having seen so much terrible mortality, Watson welcomes Holmes's reanimated man as a precious and worthy patient, while Holmes himself recoils in guilt from the mauled, imperfect life he created.
The story ultimately celebrates the compassion that motivates pioneers in medicine to push back against death itself, and sometimes - miraculously - win. It also shows the quiet but consuming ways that Holmes reanimates Watson himself, and is guided to greatness, acceptance and love in return. A beautiful story.

A 2015 Sherlock Advent Calendar
Author's summary: Posted on Tumblr for the 25 Days of Fic-mas challenge. As many Christmassy Sherlock ficlets as I can manage between now and Christmas, based on the tags as follows: Shopping for gifts, Hot cocoa, Winter wonderland, Christmas cards, Ghost of Christmas past, Naughty and nice, The Nutcracker, Baking, Making a Christmas list, Scrooge, Mulled wine, Ugly Christmas jumpers, Warming up by the fire, Trimming the tree, Christmas party, Family traditions, Christmas without you, Mistletoe, Christmas songs, All wrapped up, Christmas movies/specials, Snowed in, All I want for Christmas is you, St. Nicholas, Christmas morning. Completed.
Reccer's comments: I feel very lucky to get the chance to rec this month, as I have been reading so much wonderful fic thanks to all the holiday fests and challenges recently. This anthology by Odamaki was one of my favorite stories to follow this December -- I was stunned by the richness, poignancy, and variety of these vignettes.
Every chapter was rewarding, and I was especially touched to read about Lestrade struggling to find a way to reconnect with his adolescent daughter; James Sholto approaching Christmas with a determination to surpass the limits placed on him by physical disability and emotional isolation; and an absolutely breath-taking magical realism AU, running across multiple chapters, which followed Sherlock and John through an intricate, absorbing and unique rendition of the Nutcracker fairytale.
I hope you enjoy this lovely collection as much as I did, and if you like, the author has devoted the final chapter to providing easy navigation links identifying the pairing and main characters of each chapter and also marking the magical realism chapters so that you can easily seek out or avoid whichever vignettes suit your taste. A beautiful wintery gift to the fandom from a very talented author.

An Innocent Man
Author's summary: "And what about John Watson?" Sherlock had asked. He had expected a rather dull answer...after all, he had been away. He had not expected to hear that John had spent the past two years in prison. Series 3 AU. Not slash.
Reccer's comments: If you like John whump, this is certainly the fic for you. Sherlock comes back after two years of being away, only to find out that John has spent that entire time behind bars, convicted of being an accessory to Sherlock's supposed 'crimes.' He's exonerated and released just before Sherlock's return - but not before going through some pretty traumatic experiences at the hands of certain guards and prisoners.
This is a Series 3 AU, but you will still meet some of the characters from that series, only under different circumstances. And some of the same dialogue takes place as well - only, again, in different scenarios than in canon. I particularly liked Bill Wiggins here, as he happens to meet John while they are both serving time, and ends up in a happier place than his counterpart does as a result.
I really liked Lestrade's character her as well, as he ends up being the loyal friend and champion that John needs to secure his eventual release.
A big part of the story is John coming to terms with the fact that the people who knew about Sherlock's fake death - Mycroft and Molly - never came forward with the truth so as to exonerate John before he ever went to trial. Sherlock is off the hook in this regard, at least, since he had no idea what was happening with John while he was away.
Throughout all of this, there is also an actual "Empty House" scenario unfolding through it all. We get an actual Sebastian Moran and an actual, very tense confrontation, something I really missed in the BBC's version.
And one final warning: There is mention of John having attempted suicide while in prison, although the event itself occurs offscreen. Just be aware.
Enjoy!

A River Without Banks
Author's summary: "You love this, being Sherlock Holmes." He had once. When had it all gone so wrong?
Reccer's comments: First of all, I will directly quote the author from their beginning notes: "I assure you that there WILL be a happy ending, by which I mean John and Sherlock, together exclusively and forever, world without end, amen. (Just so we’re clear.)" So if the warnings scare you, know that EVERYTHING IS TEMPORARY AND IT WILL BE FINE. But the bad stuff still happens, so if it's triggery be aware that parts of this fic get very intense. The first half has a lot of angst, but never fear; there are also happy, romantic times as well.
This story is by the same writer who gave us "The Frost is All Over". The fic begins right where HLV left off, with Moriarty supposedly returning from the dead. In essence, it is a time-travel fic, with Sherlock going back in time in an attempt to put the universe back on its correct course after being shifted out of alignment by Moriarty's actions on the rooftop of Bart's. I am a *sucker* for time travel stories, with all of the paradoxes and twists and turns that that genre entails. And boy, does Chryse deliver in spades. Because not just one journey back in time is required; each failed attempt ends with Sherlock's death in that timeline kicking him back into his own (hence the character death warning). And every time Sherlock makes another attempt, his memory of all the previous timelines is erased, making each journey back its own self-contained story with its own adventure and ending, some happier than others. There's also a case that keeps showing up in subsequent timelines, just biding its time until the 'correct' version of Sherlock Holmes shows up to solve it.
My heart ached for Sherlock during a large portion of this fic, as I watched him struggle, literally time and time again, with the emotional fallout of each and every timeline. The storytelling is vivid and layered, with each timeline building on the previous ones and moving the story forward in Sherlock's search for the 'true' timeline that will set everything to rights. The perfect 'fix-it' fic for Series 3, in my opinion.

The Measure of a Gentlemen (TMaoG Universe series)
Series: http://archiveofourown.org/series/223403
Author's summary: It is a truth universally acknowledged, that a single man in possession of a good fortune, must be in want of a partner.
Less universally acknowledged is that a single man in possession of very little in the way of fortune may be in want of a partner as well, but John Watson had little time or energy to devote to his own wants or needs...
Enter one Mr Holmes...
Reccer's comments: I adored this story to pieces it is brilliant. She did an amazing job with the manner of speech and such a great writing style. John and Molly are so cute as friends and the story is just charming.
I do love all the retellings of Pride and Prejudice and in this verse it's wonderful. Her fic is original and delightful. I also love how there is no period homophobia...love who you want and live how you want.

The Only Emperor
Author's summary: It never occurred to Sherlock Holmes that an ice cream shop might attract children.
Reccer's comments: There must be hundreds of 'alternate profession' stories out there for Sherlock and John, but this one is special to me. I love coloredink's writing, and this story consistently charms my socks off.
Sherlock is determined to revolutionize the field of ice cream, largely by creating the strangest flavours imaginable and making them work, and John takes charge of paying the bills and keeping a firm separation between Sherlock and the customers. In some respects this is a fairly faithful alternate version of series 1, and I love the creative way the author translates the dramatic conflicts into the world of ice cream. Sherlock makes quite a wonderful Willy Wonka-esque figure, so deadpan and so bizarrely committed to creating something new in the world of food. I love the easy camaraderie between Sherlock and John, the charming whirlwind of their shop where most of the series regulars eventually pass through, and the imaginative appearance of The Blind Banker and other motifs from the earliest days of the show. Quietly funny, off-beat and warm, it's a strange and lovely (and tasty!) AU.

That's not my name! - women of bbc sherlock
Music Title & Artist: "That's Not My Name" by The Ting Tings
Reccer's Comments: This vid offers a fun, punchy, sharp and somewhat angry commentary on the limited character development and screen time provided for the women of BBC Sherlock (note that this was made before S3, so it does not feature Mary or Janine). Entertaining, catchy, cleverly edited, and a fierce piece of meta to boot. It gave me fresh appreciation for the investment so many fine actresses have brought to the show and the ways that they used what opportunities they had to create moments in which their characters could live and breathe.

Love or What You Will
Author's summary: John is an English professor who specializes in War and Post-War Literature and Sherlock is the brilliant yet impossible Ph.D. student assigned to be his TA because no one in the Chemistry Department is willing to put up with him. And - somewhere between Waugh and Plath, e-mails and takeaway, novels and villanelles - they fall in love.
Reccer's comments: After subscribing to this fic in its infancy and watching the chapter count go up, I finally got a chance to sit down and read it through yesterday, and found it really quite brilliant. Sherlock and John are wonderfully in character, despite a major change of profession for both of them, and I think that the feeling of familiarity came from the dialogue and kindness, on John's part, and the wit, mental acuity, and crime solving on Sherlock's. Other characters including Molly, Lestrade, and Mycroft make short appearances that really add to the story. In my opinion, John and Molly's friendship is perfectly done, and in addition to that small mentions of Donovan and Anderson were written perfectly. Even Moriarty - who can feel very out of place in some AUs - was well done and fit in with the story. Besides that, I especially loved the way poetry was integrated into the story, the tension that was built between Sherlock and John, and the final resolution of that tension; by the end, I felt entirely satisfied.

The White Tower and the Winding Stair
Author's summary: Molly reads a lot of fairy tales and she knows very well how this story is supposed to go. The Princess in the Tower is rescued, either by the handsome Prince or the plucky young stable boy, and then they fall in love. What definitely isn’t supposed to happen is that the handsome Prince and the stable boy fall in love with each other, while the Princess is instructed to marry the Prince’s legendarily cold-hearted brother. But life rarely goes Molly’s way.
Reccer's comments: Molly is one of my favourite characters and I think she is quite difficult to write well. In canon she’s such a mass of conflicting qualities: she can seem timid but she’s also bold, brave and able to stand up for herself; she’s socially awkward but is highly intelligent with a successful career; she can seem innocent and unworldly but as part of her job deals with the aftermath of violent deaths; she can be misled because she wants to see the good in everyone but is also observant and can see things as they really are.
Here I think the author has captured her perfectly—perhaps ironically as this is an AU. The fic is set in a fairytale-like world but a realistic one in which there are no magical solutions, and happy endings for good people are not inevitable. Molly is a princess by birth who has to learn how to be one in practice. She discovers how to be independent while at the same time gaining many friends: though Molly takes centre stage this is an ensemble piece—the cast taking on new roles but everyone recognisable and in character.
This is first and foremost a great story—you want to keep reading and find out what happens next. But it’s the quality of the writing that’ll bring you back to read it again. This was one of the submissions for the Summer 2015 holmestice exchange and it was one of the highlights of the fest for me.

Dark Things
Author's summary: The answer should be obvious. It's almost always obvious. But these murders... They don't make sense.
Reccer's comments: Take Sherlock in clever deduction mode, have him meet Lovecraft and a new genre is created: tentacle casefic.
London is confronted by a string of atrociously violent murders and no one, initially not even the world’s only consulting detective can make head or tail of them. There’s no motive, no method, just a trail of hideously abused corpses.
Of course Sherlock is the one to eventually figure out what’s going on, staying true to his maxim that when you have eliminated the impossible, whatever remains, however improbable, must be the truth, even if you'll first have to wrap your head about the fact that it slithers and has numerous tentacles.
As any Lovecraft-enthusiast is justly weary of those tentacles, Sherlock’s actual explanation for the murders had me snorting with laughter.

Game Nights
LJ: http://random-nexus.livejournal.com/258870.html
Author's summary: John's meeting with Greg, Molly, and another DI from NSY for game nights. Sherlock's feeling a bit jealous and has to figure out what to do about the problem.
Reccer's comments: This is very cute and funny. John meets up with Greg and others for a Dungeons and Dragons game night at Greg's flat, leaving a note for Sherlock who is, of course, stuck in his mind palace and unaware that John has left. Most of the story takes place during the game itself as John and his friends play the game. The names and characters the players have chosen for themselves are amusing and apropos; I found myself giggling and thinking 'but of course, what else could they have chosen?' Sherlock comes out of his mind palace to find John gone, and decides to find out for himself what these game nights are all about. But instead of just coming to the front door and knocking like a normal person, he sneaks in by breaking into Lestrade's bedroom and spying on everyone as they play.
The funniest part of the story happens when Sherlock surprises John by accepting his standing invitation and tagging along for the next game night. The reveal for what character and name Sherlock has chosen for himself is epic, and the very last line? Priceless.
