Popping the Question
Summary: In Balin’s estimation, ‘awkward’ is hardly covering it. Just when the Company had thought they had finally prodded their leader and their burglar past the whole shy avoidance stage of affection and into a much more honest dialogue with one another about their feelings, they had to run into this problem.

The problem is, in Dwarven culture, the woman is the one who proposes marriage.

|| Glóin is the next to speak up. “My wife proposed to me with a contract,” he says. “She had it all drafted up and even brought a notary to the proposal. I accepted her on the spot.”

“Not a hard catch, my brother, when perfectly-worded clauses can make him weak,” Óin adds with a wry chuckle, causing Glóin to shove him.

“I’m quite sure her beauty caught my eye even before her penmanship,” he declares, tucking his thumbs into his belt quite smugly, “and her axe-throwing abilities even before that.”

Billie looks between the two of them, an eyebrow quirked. “Your wife proposed to you,” she states.

Red Lines in Dark Stone
Summary: After BOFA Thorin is wrecked by guilt, convinced that most of the bloodshed is his fault (see: the arkenstone debacle). As king and responsible for Erebor, he decides that he will do anything to stop himself from succumbing to the gold sickness again, even if it means hurting himself.

When his family and friends find out, they don't react as he'd expected them to.

(Original prompt in the author's notes.)

|| The first time it happens it’s an accident, the shards of the pretty little vase Bilbo had brought back from the Shire having left shallow cuts on his left hand and arm as it shattered under the pressure of his grip. Thorin had broken a lot of things lately, when his mind flashes back to battlefields and sickness without warning and the sudden assault makes him gasp for air into constricting lungs.

He stands in the middle of his chambers, unheeding of the incongruously bright flowers littering the floor around him as he stares at the drops of red on his scarred skin and finds himself distantly thinking this could work.

It doesn’t take long for it to become a habit.

Fish & Barrels
Summary: Escaping Thranduil's dungeons via barrels doesn't go to plan. What plan there was.

Why Hobbits don't swim. Most Hobbits.

|| The water was an icy shock, slamming into his small body and forcing the air out his lungs. Bilbo twisted, icy pain shooting through his limbs, and clawed for the surface.

He broke free with a gasp, surprised at how fast he had dragged himself up. Hobbits weren't known for their swimming.

A Light Touch
Summary: Bilbo discovers that dwarves have to seriously consider the possibility of someone becoming their spouse if said someone manages to add a braid to their hair while they are sleeping - without waking them up! This seems to him to be a perfect opportunity to both train for his task as a burglar... and maaaybe get something else at the same time.

|| “I was under the impression that dwarves are usually heavy sleepers, though,” Bilbo said thoughtfully. “It doesn’t seem like it would be such a large feat to manage to braid your hair without waking you.”

“Usually it isn’t,” the cook nodded. “It is mostly used as a way to state your intent. This way, you cannot be dismissed out of hand, your One has to at least consider you. There is nothing saying that it will absolutely result in marriage, of course, as you can always say no, after careful consideration, but it heightens your chances, certainly.”

“Ah,” the hobbit nodded, comprehension lightening his face as he reached around his companion to prepare the fat for the frying pan. “Well, I suppose that makes more sense.”

Summary: When (badly hidden) secrets come to light in Trollshaw, the Company decides to set out and rid the threats that plague the Middle Earth, one at a time.

a.k.a. the time travel fic where the whole company goes back.

|| In hindsight, Bilbo Baggins of Bag End should have noticed something amiss about his Dwarves.

He should have noticed they were much more polite and pleasant than the last time they arrived. Each one of them, even Thorin Oakenshield, introduced themselves with a grin and a bow fit for a king or a hero (not that Bilbo knew of this custom). Most of them had tears in their eyes (even Dwalin and Nori) and Bofur had to be held back by both Bifur and Bombur lest he bowl over their Hobbit host.

Her Mother's Daughter
Summary: Bella Baggins has her mother's wanderlust and her father's business sense. We all know how the trip to the Lonely Mountain ought to go...

|| Bella Baggins, as the whole Shire knows, inherited a full share of her infamous mother’s personality, her wanderlust and Tookish love of adventure. But it is impossible for even the stuffiest matron to deny that Bella Baggins also inherited her father’s reliable steadiness and impeccable business sense; and so it is that when Bella Baggins is thirty-three and finally ready to make her very first solo trip out of the Shire, she returns from Rivendell having not only spent three months among the elves, but also having forged a remarkable trade agreement in order to sell the excess produce of the spice gardens which her father so foresightedly planted in the fields around Bag End. The agreement makes her very rich indeed inside of ten years, and her proud father goes to his grave swearing up and down that his daughter is a better businessman than he; her mother, equally proud, watches Bella set out each year with the caravans and wipes away happy tears to see her daughter blossom so.

One of These Days (Again and Again)
Summary: “Right,” Fili said. “We need to all stay alive, then. That shouldn’t be too hard.”

“You try it,” Bilbo muttered. “See how well you do.”

By a curse or a blessing from the Valar, Bilbo finds himself repeating the same horrific day of war outside of Erebor again and again. His repeats are always triggered when someone from the company falls. He suffers days and days on his own before the others begin to repeat the day with him.

One would think that with the whole company, an elf king, and a bowman all knowing what was to come, Bilbo would have an easier time getting them all through the day alive.

so many beautiful reasons
Summary: They say actions speak louder than words. Thorin hoped his actions would tell Bilbo all he could not say of his feelings. But when courting someone of a different culture, perhaps, a few words would not go astray.

|| “It’s a glory-of-the-snow. I’ve heard of them before but I’ve never seen one. Thorin says they grow here, before the snow even melts sometimes. He said it was to symbolize strength in the face of adversity.” Bilbo blushed again and Nori couldn’t help grinning wickedly and winking at him. Bilbo had learned long ago to ignore him and just continued with his explanation. “He didn’t say what the blue stones are and I didn’t think to ask but the center stone is a chip of the Arkenstone.”

Nori thought there was probably more it than that - you don’t break bits off a bloody priceless heirloom to cheer on someone’s stubbornness, no matter how much you wanted in their pants - but he didn’t push sensing it was a private thing between the two.

And Dori said he didn’t have any decency. He thought maybe Dori agreed with his assessment judging by the look on his face. That was his thinking hard about something serious face. Not that it was truly appropriate now. At least, it didn’t seem to be. But Dori was surprisingly adept at noticing things others missed sometimes. It drove Nori spare as he was supposed to be the one that did that.

“And did he say anything else about the bead? Or the braid?” Dori asked, though Nori couldn’t see why.

“Hmm,” Bilbo frowned in thought as he sipped his tea. “No, that was it.”

Growing Dwarves (And Kingdoms)
Summary: Sometimes, Bilbo finds, not everything goes according to plan.

First an injury and the coming winter delay his leaving Erebor, then word from the Shire leaves him mourning his beloved Bag End. And because getting added to Thorin's council isn't trouble enough, Kili is in love with an elf, Fili may or may not have his eyes on a certain little scribe, everyone seems to think he is a lady hobbit, and Thorin needs to find someone to marry.

Okay. So the last part might not be trouble, exactly, except for the part where it makes Bilbo's rather hopeless attachment even more painful. Or it wouldn't if he hadn't possibly accidentally promised to provide Thorin with an heir... and Dáin just might still be scheming something.

Fortunately, if there's one thing hobbits are good at, it's growing things. And Thorin did promise him a garden.

|| This is my favorite. That one with one with the magic acorn baby and Bilbo giving the youngest dwarrow the sex talk and Dain the matchmaker.

Eats Me Up Inside
"Hobbits are accustomed to being well-fed, but Bilbo's too polite to just push in and grab the way the dwarrow do and there's not even scraps left by the time they've finished. But Bilbo doesn't complain; Thorin already finds him annoying and the others don't seem to care all that much for him either, so he tightens his belt and makes do...until he can't anymore. " HKM Prompt

|| "Careful, we don't know the extent of his head injury-

"It's alright, halfing. Just relax-"

"No, no, please-" he tries but his voice is gone and his head aches furiously; though his vision is oddly distorted and the cold is a strong distraction, he sees Gandalf from behind the familiar and unfamiliar dwarrow faces. He tries to convey a request for help but the wizard just looks at him sadly, never saying a word. They lift the mug to his lips again and he can only turn his face away, his stomach already revolting at the little bit he swallowed. They coo at him but also grumble, a mix of indecipherable Westron and gruff Khuzdul.

"You must eat, " one says and he knows them but can't come up with a name, " You've been asleep for too long, Bilbo."

"Please, " he just wants to gather his barrings, wants the pain stop; don't they know that food will weigh him down, will keep him from running and hiding and fighting as the company needs? He feels himself slipping back into darkness but then there's the smell; he watches as a small bottle is removed from near his face, and it takes him a moment to realize that's what's keeping him awake. By this time, they're forcing broth and tonic down his throat but it just starts to come back up.

"Don't fight us, lad-"

"I mustn't-"

But the healers (he assumes that's what they are and later this is confirmed) don't let him fall back asleep, nor do they relent until his belly is uncomfortably full. He cries weakly as they leave him with worried frowns and conspiratorial whispers, all but one with two curled, grey braids, who pats his hand gently as if he's a child. Gandalf approaches soon after the door to the dimly lit room he's in slams shut (he doesn't recognize this lodging and only later on is he told he had been taken into the mountain for treatment). The tall Man bites his lip, combing a hand through Bilbo's thin, sweat soaked hair.

"Oh, old'll be alright."

Let your colours bleed (And blend with mine)
Summary: Hobbits glow whenever they are happy. Of course Gandalf forgot to tell the dwarves.

|| The elven dungeons aren’t that bad, from their perspective.

While they get to rest – on bare stone, but rest nonetheless – and eat three sizable meals a day, Bilbo dashes around the stone-carved halls, as quiet as he manages, and steals scraps of food as not to be discovered. He is thin and there are bags under his eyes, and he is so miserable he looks beyond dim: he looks like a shadow.

They can’t make him laugh, because the sound could warn the guards of Bilbo’s presence and hope would be lost then. They can, however, save some of their food – bread and fruit, mostly – to ensure that their hobbit won’t faint from starvation.

And if anyone other than Bombur notices Bilbo flickering ever so weakly whenever he comes around after spending time with Thorin, nobody mentions it and neither does he.

A Glittering Abyss
Summary: After the Battle of the Five Armies, Thorin has forgiven Bilbo; but Bilbo finds he cannot forgive Thorin.

|| “Please do not go,” Thorin said softly. He was only a few feet away now, awkward with his crutch. He was bleeding through his dressing on one side.

“I must go! I cannot stay!” Bilbo cried wildly. Thorin’s hand was now on his pony’s bridle.

Still Thorin pressed him. “Why must you leave us so soon? And why would you not say goodbye to me before you left?”

Bilbo could not help it. He drew Sting.

“Let go my pony’s bridle,” he said. His voice was high and wavering. The Iron Hills guards were suddenly alert, but Thorin raised his hand to stay them.

“Bilbo,” he said. “Bilbo. You fear me.” Bilbo felt an angry tear roll down his face. He nodded once.

An Unexpected Proposal
Summary: As Bilbo sat smoking in his empty hobbit hole, he couldn’t help but wonder – when did his life become so boring? Or better yet – when did his old life stop being enough?

He suspected the answer to that question lay somewhere around the time when he had refused Thorin Oakenshield’s offer of marriage.

|| “I have stopped by Erebor this spring,” Gandalf began. “I bring letters from your friends. They were quite adamant that I should deliver them at once and kept asking me why you haven’t come to visit them.”

“I can’t go to Erebor, Gandalf. You know very well why,” Bilbo shook his head, pouring the hot water over the tea leaves.

“My dear Bilbo, I am sure Thorin has forgiven you already.”

Bilbo took a moment to fully appreciate the irony that even Gandalf, who had been the one to help him leave Erebor back then, apparently thought that he needed Thorin’s forgiveness. He bit back a stream of slightly hysterical laughter that wanted to bubble out of his throat.

To this day, Thorin hadn’t apologised to him for threatening to kill him. Bilbo thought that the few insults he himself had thrown at the dwarf after the ridiculous proposal paled next to the gravity of Thorin’s actions, but everyone else seemed to be convinced otherwise.

Either Gandalf had very selective memory of events, or Thorin himself was a wizard, capable of manipulating people’s thoughts according to his wishes. Since both of those options seemed equally ridiculous, it was more likely that Gandalf was planning something, once again trying to manoeuvre Bilbo into something he probably wouldn’t like. For the sake of appeasing the wizard, Bilbo suppressed his irritation and decided to play along.

|| That one where Thorin has to work for it. Rightfully so. Also the one with the tapestry, because you spent months looking for it and all you could remember was that bit.

Dwarven Traditions
Really, what it all came down to was that dwarves were, almost definitely, the strangest race in all of Middle Earth.

It began with a fireplace. Seeing as it was Bilbo’s first time in the mountain and his first winter there besides, the Company had decided to show him a few of their winter traditions, and Bilbo had gone along with it, interested to learn more about the mysterious culture that he had, more or less, dropped himself smack in the middle of.

That was his first mistake.

Dead Until Proven Alive
Summary: Bilbo is hungry, dirty and very confused. Why will no one tell him what happened to Thorin Oakenshield.

|| In the Shire, it was polite practice to wait three months until declaring someone officially dead. The hobbits reckoned that after that period, Yavanna in all her glory, had decided to keep what was given rather than heal through the power of her good, green earth. Though for all appearances sake, a hobbit may look dead and gone, it was more akin to a state of hibernation where he waited until he had been placed in the ground to bloom once more, Yavanna willing.

The hobbits were of the earth, from the earth, and when they were injured or seriously ill, they returned to the earth. All knew that hobbits had a special relationship with all things that grew in the wide, green world. What they did not know was that the earth in her turn, cared for her hobbits.

However, like many things, it was just not shared with the ‘big folk.’ The hobbits had their own way of life, no doubt about that, and they were quite content to pray that they did not get injured during the rainy season because who wants to try and clean off mud like that?
