Duarte on Honeycomb: Hardware Buttons, Multi-Tasking Overhaul and More
Image: Engadget

In a 25 minute interview at C.E.S. with Engadget's Joshua Topolsky, Android Director of User Experience Matias Duarte revealed several details of what's changing in Honeycomb, including that all hardware buttons will be optional, opening up manufacturers to create form factors that don't include the familiar Back/Menu/Home/Search combination.

"With Honeycomb, you don't need to have physical buttons. ... We're not going to dictate to you if you need to have buttons or not."

Duarte, who was responsible for the UI of webOS and the Sidekick before joining Google, revealed other tidbits about Honeycomb in the interview:

He confirmed that Honeycomb is not just a tablet version of Android, but "is absolutely the direction for Android" for all kinds of devices.
The multi-tasking UI gets an overhaul, with an on-screen button that users tap to bring up a view of recent apps-- not just icons and names, but a "visible, tangible representation" of the what the app looks like. While the long-press goes away for this function, it is "still part of Android in terms of interacting and selecting objects."
An "application bar" at the top of the screen will show different actions the user can take, changing contextually to expose the most common functions and reduce the need to hunt through menus.
OEM skins like Sense and Blur are not going away. Honeycomb will be open source like every other release of Android, and he "hopes partners will feel comfortable re-skinning it and adding value. ... We want to craft a really solid basic platform for everybody to innovate on top of."

Those are just the highlights-- the interview is full of interesting stuff about Android and UI design in general. Watch it below and head on over to Engadget for their take on it.

ArtPro Nail Printer V6.1 hands-in (video)
As good old-fashioned girly men, we're always looking for excuses to get our nails done, so our heartfelt thanks go out to Guangzhou Taiji Electronics and their ArtPro Nail Printer line. You put a couple of white base coats on, stick your hand inside, align the desired image to your nail, and hit print -- and an inkjet head (we saw a Lenovo cartridge inside) goes to work. A few seconds later, you're ready to seal the deal with clearcoat. A simple idea, well-executed and highly satisfying. Video of our experience inside the future of the beauty industry after the jump.

CES 2011: Video Walkthrough Of Toshiba’s Anonymous Tegra II Tablet
While Toshiba’s original attempts at an Android tablet running on the Tegra chip didn’t exactly go down a storm, they seem keen to continue with Android devices, and brought a new tablet with them to CES. Artem got a video demo from one of their reps, and as you can see there are some attractive features to note.

Like the Motorola XOOM, the nameless Toshiba tablet (henceforth "Anon") has a 10.1" WXGA (1280×800) screen, which was unsurprisingly nice and crisp. It also sports the convenience of full-size USB and HDMI ports, along with a full...

Griffin Beacon universal remote control system hands-on
We visited Griffin's CES booth to check out the Beacon universal remote control expecting yet another Redeye clone, but instead wound up walking away impressed. Two notable features of the prototype Bluetooth to IR converter device are that it's battery powered and includes a 360 degree IR blaster. These are key since they give users the freedom to place the transmitter almost anywhere around an entertainment center. The free iPhone remote app built by Dijit was the real highlight though. The UI and functionality was incredibly intuitive, and we especially liked that the setup process doesn't require inputting device model numbers. Instead, users just pick the brand and then test a series of code cycles to see if their components respond. The TV guide and Netflix integration are also points of distinction over competitors -- since you can select shows or movies to watch directly from the app. Last but not least, your remote settings can be saved and downloaded to as many devices as you like. To give you a feel for the system, we've included plenty of shots of the app's UI in the gallery below along with more photos the device.

Mavizon’s Mavia 3G-Enabled Gizmo Plugs Into Your Car, Acts As A LoJack, Texts Your Family, Diagnoses Your Check Engine Light [Video]
Walking around CES Unveiled on the first day of CES 2011, I ran into a little company called Mavizon Tech, showcasing their product with a beautiful name Mavia. I you’ve never heard of Mavizon, don’t feel bad – they don’t have many consumer-facing products just yet, but it’s all about to change when Mavia hits the market later this year.
What is Mavia? It’s a little gizmo box that plugs into your car’s diagnostics port and sits there, drawing the power from the aforementioned port. Inside the Mavia – a GPS module and a 3G radio that is able to...

SQ Blaster Pro is a WiFi, Z-Wave, and IR blaster home automation powerhouse
We've seen plenty of IR blasters around the Engadget trailer but few, if any, include WiFi and Z-Wave home automation radios. But that's exactly what the boys over at Square Connect have planned as a followup to their existing SQ Blaster product. A trick that lets you control your home theater equipment, window coverings, lights, and HVAC systems from the company's own SQ Remote iPhone app. At least that's the plan when it ships sometime around Q2, possibly touting WiFi Direct capability and Wi-Fi Protected Setup (WPS). The device above is a non-working prototype that just happens to look nice with the Apple TV. It features cutouts for a USB port (power and setup), IR extenders, built-in blasters, and removable antenna. Working models are already in field testing with shipments expected to land in the homes of consumers sometime in Q2.

Memjet: ink-on with the world's fastest printer
Sure the world of digital printing might not catch many people's eye, but there's something otherworldly about just how fast this thing spits out pages. Memjet's office reference printer is fast. How fast? 60 pages a minute, fast. Print quality looks fine at 1600 dots per inch and reportedly half the cost of ownership of other color printers. The trick behind the speed are the 70,000 nozzles firing more than 700 million drops of ink per second that print the page in one pass rather than the several passes of traditional inkjets -- or enough for a page a second. We're pretty sure if we had one of these at our disposal we'd be throwing as much material as we could at it just to watch the magic on the output side.

Nike+ SportWatch GPS
At CES 2011 in Las Vegas Nike and TomTom announced the Nike+ SportWatch GPS powered by TomTom. This new GPS watch targets avid runners and allows them to share their experience online at nikeplus.com.

Nike+ SportWatch GPS has a super simple design with only three buttons and a Tap Screen for navigation. During the run, the new Nike+ SportWatch GPS tracks location and shows time, distance, pace, and calories burned. And for most accurate distance information the GPS receiver works in tandem with the shoe-based Nike+ Sensor.

Some features include

Tap Screen for setting laps and activating backlight
Run History with data from past runs
Personal Records including those imported from Nikeplus.com
Quick Start with optional shoe-based Nike+ Sensor
Heart Rate Monitor compatibility

What’s different about Nike+ SportWatch GPS is that even encourages you to run. For example it will recognize your personal bests, nag if you haven’t been running for 5 days, and provide post run acknowledgment and encouragement.

Once you’re done running works with USB port on a Mac or PC and transfers information to www.nikeplus.com. The site provides GPS mapping, total miles, pace and elevation data.

Nike+ SportWatch GPS will start selling in US and the UK starting April 1st.

Star Wars Complete Saga Blu-ray news: release in September, 30 hours of special features, available for preorder now (video)
This might not be the "most impressive" Star Wars announcement you were looking for. Not that it's a bad thing the complete saga will be released on Blu-ray in September, and there was no mention of any exclusivity shenanigans, but despite making this the least disappointing thing that has happened to the series in a decade or so forgive us for being slightly underwhelmed. Fans will appreciate the promised 30 hours of special features -- or wait for Red Letter Media to recut them into a careful dissection of everything wrong about the prequels -- but the ability to buy the two trilogies individually for $44.99 ($69.99 MSRP) is definitely appreciated. You can queue your $89.99 ($139 MSRP) preorder on Amazon right now while you check out video of the announce featuring Lord Vader himself, including a peek at the trailer embedded after the break.

A first look at Honeycomb and Google’s redesigned Android apps
While Motorola was the first to unveil their Android 3.0 XOOM Tablet, T-Mobile was the first to actually share some Android 3.0 love by releasing some “First Look” videos of several redesigned Google apps running on Honeycomb with their sneak peek of the upcoming T-Mobile G-Slate.

If you’ve been following all the Honeycomb news over the past few weeks, you’ve probably seen bits and pieces of the video clips below. T-mobile’s Android 3.0 videos show off the basic home screen UI, Gmail, YouTube, Google Maps, Google Books, the new tabbed browser, and fully functional video chat with GTalk.

Talking with Motorola yesterday, we learned that the Android 3.0 SDK will be released within the coming weeks, though the first Honeycomb tablets will not be making their debut until mid February. Hopefully, Google will release the SDK far enough in advance that app developers have enough time to tweak their apps to take advantage of the new features offered inside Android 3.0.

Live from Dell's CES 2011 press event
Dell hasn't had a regular booth or presser at CES in a few years now -- the company chooses to bunker down in a suite at the Palms instead. That's where we're currently hangin', waiting to see what Round Rock has in store for us this year -- and there's a huge Alienware Hummer parked outside, so we're definitely expecting some gaming news. But what else will Dell do? Another Adamo-bearing model? Another super-hasty Streak hands-on in a back alley? We'll find out soon enough.Continue reading Live from Dell's CES 2011 press event
