After the war, everything is perfect. There is no more strife. No more worrying if their loved ones will be ripped from their hands, dead in an instant. All the universe knows is the peace that’s settled after the storm Keith and the others weathered.

Hunk has his own famous restaurant, known all across the universe; Pidge works hard furthering technology, the genius of their time; Allura and Lance have their own twins, sweet and angelic as can be; and Keith and Shiro are happily married, filling their rightful places at the head of the Galaxy Garrison.

But there's something missing in their lives - a small child-like shape. Shiro has always been good with kids. But Keith? Keith is worried. To say he didn't have the best childhood is putting it lightly. He can't stand the one thought that haunts him: what if their child ends up like him?

"Never Say Remember" by Malora
(Harry Potter)
Summary: 13-year-old Harry is dragged into another world where he was adopted by Snape. Where his mother is still alive. Where he can't stop feeling like a stranger. And Snape discovers that a new Potter has appeared. One who won't leave him alone. Who knows Snape's deepest secret. As both Harrys search for a way home, they begin to question what home really is.

Notes: This was not what I expected. I was expecting a there-and-back-again story, where everyone came out of the incident with warm fuzzies and wisdom. This was much deeper and less simple and less easy than that.

What can you do to a man who has lost everything? Give him back something broken. Yet this story goes beyond even that, and says that, yes, you cannot always mend what is broken, but you still need to go forward, snatching the light from the darkness. That despair is easy, and choosing to hope can be the hardest choice of all.

"A Study in Magic" by Books Of Change
(Harry Potter/Sherlock)
Summary: When Professor McGonagall went to visit Harry Watson, son of Mr. Sherlock Holmes and Dr. Watson, to deliver his Hogwarts letter, she was in the mindset of performing a familiar if stressful annual routine. Consequently she was unprepared for the shock of finding the cause behind Harry Potter's disappearance. BBC Sherlock HP crossover AU

Notes: Brilliant. Characterisation, world-building, mysteries, deductions, clever plans, relationships, character growth, mistakes, consequences, they're all there, and all well done. This is an epic because it covers Harry's first four years at Hogwarts; you might want to take a breather in between each year... except that you won't want to, because this will drag you in and not let you go.

"A Study in Magic" by Vixit
(Harry Potter/Sherlock Holmes)
Summary: When Albus Dumbledore shows up at Baker Street with strange demands and baby-filled picnic baskets, Sherlock Holmes is less than thrilled. Featuring Detective!Harry, Competent!Quirrell, and the world's only private consulting detective. No slash.

Notes: Yes, another story which wonders how things might have been different if Harry had been brought up by someone else; in this case, Sherlock Holmes. Despite the 20th Century setting, this Holmes is based on the Jeremy Brett version of Holmes, not the Benedict Cumberbatch version. Nature versus nurture? This Harry is brought up to be a superb detective - tested almost to destruction by the very thorough and ever-curious Holmes, with a leavening of kindness from Dr. Watson. But this isn't a super!Harry, because he's a superb detective with hardly any social skills.

This is really very well done, with its extracts from Dr. Watson's journal, and the cold brilliance of Holmes, the tenacity of Harry, and that's just the start. Featuring a determined Neville Longbottom, a flabbergasted Hermione, a manipulative Dumbledore, and an absolutely brilliant non-possessed Quirrell.

"Nobody Cared" by Etherian
(Harry Potter)
Summary: 11 yr old Harry misses the Hogwarts Express. Snape is sent to find out why. What he finds changes any preconceived notions he might have had about the Boy-Who-Lived. AU, manipulative!Dumbledore, DE's, Voldy, but no horcruxes.

Notes: Another first-year AU, another epic, another abusive!Dursleys story.
Why do I keep reading them? Because I like Snape, I like seeing a
Snape who meets Harry in different circumstances and loves Harry for
the sake of his mother rather than hating Harry for the sake of his
father. Such a theme never gets old for me, so long as the execution
is good.

And here, the execution is good. Not perfect, mind you. There are
some mistakes, some stumbles, some loose ends, and a few times when
the author does a bit of an info-dump in the late part of the story
about something that happened in an earlier part of the story, where
I felt like saying "yes, I know this already, get on with it!" Also,
the story suffers from one of the scene-separator
massacres, so one has to be careful in figuring out when there's
been a change of scene. But the characterisation is good, the
world-building is good, there is a mix of action and
relationship-building, not just between Snape and Harry, but with
other people too.

If I told you what happened, if I told you how it ended, you would
justifiably scoff at how unbelievable it was; these characters would
never behave like that! But I tend to give an author one "what-if"
for free. What if the Dursleys were much more abusive than in canon?
After all, that's the premise of a story such as this. But even if
you give the Dursleys their free "what-if", you would still think the
other characters such as the Malfoys, the Grangers, and Dumbledore,
simply wouldn't behave like that. And yet the author convinces you
because she allows it to creep up on you slowly. And she roots it in
canon. That's why it works. What if Lucius really *had* been put
under the Imperius curse when he was a Death Eater? What if
Hermione's obsession with books had something deeper to it? What if
the seemingly crazy actions of Dumbledore had reasons behind them?

Yes, I say "seemingly crazy actions" because when you look back on it
from the perspective of the whole series, a lot of Dumbledore's
actions did not make sense. Don't read this story if you didn't have
at least one moment of "what was Dumbledore *thinking*?" when you were
reading the Harry Potter series. If you feel that Dumbledore was
perfection incarnated and could never have done any wrong, you won't
like this story. If you're open to an interpretation of a possible
Dumbledore who manipulates people for the sake of the Greater Good,
then I think you'll be okay with it.

Another thing I like about this story is the themes:
what it means to be a family; learning from your mistakes.
Again, these themes don't just apply to Snape and Harry, but to other
characters, in big and small ways.

A good story. Set aside a fair amount of time for it, because it is Epic.

"The Last Will and Testament of Lily Evans Potter" by Chrmisha
(Harry Potter)
Summary: Petunia Dursley is cleaning the attic and finds a previously unknown copy of Lily's will. Ecstatic at her discovery, she promptly abandons her burdensome nephew, along with Lily's will, on the doorstep of her childhood neighbour (aka, Severus Snape).

Notes: I like the characterisation of both Snape and Harry in this. Snape is angry
and prejudiced and demanding, but he never considers refusing what he sees as
his responsibility. Harry is angry and sullen and distrustful and stoic, but
once they've cleared the air, he's willing to try. Not that they get on
perfectly, and not that Snape is one whit less snarky; he wouldn't be Snape
if he wasn't snarky!

"Whelp" by Jharad17
(Harry Potter)
Summary: AU. Harry is 7 years old and treated literally like a dog by the Dursleys. Will he be rescued by the wizarding world? Will he ever be fit to take on the mantle of The Boy Who Lived? childfic, preHogwarts, Sevitus. warning:extreme child abuse, violence

Notes: I balked at reading this story for a long time, because the summary led me to believe that the child abuse in the story was worse than it actually was.
That being said, it is still horrible and unconscionable treatment and much worse than anything the Dursleys did in canon.
However, it only lasts for the first four chapters, and after that, Snape comes to the rescue, yay.

I really like the characterisation of Snape in this. He's not a nasty git who hates Harry, nor is he an angel.
He's human, he tries hard, he feels out of his depth, he loses his temper and regrets it, he makes amends, he teaches, he loves.

Harry here is what one would expect from an abused!Harry story;
he's as skittish as a nervous horse, shy, untrusting, full of misunderstandings, and yet young enough to blossom under affection.

"Walk the Shadows" by Jharad17
(Harry Potter)
Summary: The summer after 5th year, Death Eaters find Harry abandoned in the Dursley house and bring him to Voldemort. Will one particular Death Eater give up his position and his hate to save his enemy's child? Eventual Snape mentors Harry fic.

Notes: If you've read other HP stories by this author, you'll know she likes writing hurt/comfort, and tormenting Harry Potter horribly. This story is no exception; so beware violence and worse things at the start of this story. What I liked this story for was the aftermath of the "hurt"; Harry's recovery is neither trivialized by being too easy, or turned into melodrama by making him a basket case. It's two steps forward, one step back most of the time. Harry is fragile and volatile, but also resilient. And he's a teenager, he has his grumps and his silliness as well.

I like the characterisation of Snape here: he doesn't suddenly become sentimental; there are times when he's hanging on to his temper by his fingernails; he doesn't refuse to see the truth when it's in front of him; he still sneers and snarls and smirks.

"Luna's Hubby" by MeteoricShipyards
(Harry Potter)
Summary: 7 year old Luna wants a husband, and she wants one now. With the unintended help of her befuddled father, she kidnaps Harry Potter. Idea and 1st chapter by Roscharch's Blot

Notes: This starts off with a piece of delightful lunacy, then settles down into a
serious story with sparkles of humour. Luna's action has consequences for
more than herself and Harry, and many things are better for it. This covers
from when Luna was seven through to the year of the Triwizard Tournament.

But this isn't one of those stories where one thing changes and everyone
lives happily ever after. It also isn't one of those Super!Harry stories;
I'm impressed, because while Luna and Harry are talented and clever and
proactive, they don't come across as Canon!Sues, just Ravenclaws brought up
in a loving Ravenclaw household. They don't do everything right, they make
erroneous assumptions, they grow and learn, they make friends.

And such friends! The friendships forged before they go to Hogwarts continue
when they get there, and people make different choices. I love how
Pre-Hogwarts Draco wryly pretends to do what his father asks in "subtly"
influencing Harry and Luna to the pure-blood supremacy ideals. Some
characters get a facelift without being whitewashed: we learn more about
Sybil Trelawny, and the author actually managed to make me feel sorry for
Bellatrix, no mean feat. The characterisation of Dumbledore manages to keep
a balance between well-intentioned manipulation and foolishness; this isn't
a Dumbledore-bashing story, but he isn't all-wise either.

Note that this was written before Deathly Hallows, so it doesn't take
account of the information we learned there. Certain other things have been
changed from what we knew from canon, but not enough to worry hugely about,
such as different locations for Horcruxes, and slightly different Tasks in
the Triwizard Tournament.

Also note that scene separators have gone walkabout, probably due to one of's scene-separator massacres. Please don't let that stop you;
this story is definitely worth it.

"The Definition Of Family" by Oliver Snape
(Harry Potter)
Summary: Now back at Hogwarts, Harry balances school and his home life as he prepares to face Voldemort and learns to trust Snape's guidance. Along the way they both learn that family also means support.

Notes: I really like this story. Not only do we get good characterisations of Snape and Harry, but a number of things I hadn't thought of before,
such as:
(a) Dumbledore has as much craving for the dramatic as Voldemort does, while Snape's plans are less grandiose and more cunning;
(b) What if the Horcrux had had more effect on Harry than just knowing Parseltongue - and what if he was affected by its removal?
These and other things mean that this story is more divergent from canon than the previous story; divergent in a thoughtful way.

"The Definition Of Home" by Oliver Snape
(Harry Potter)
Summary: Harry runs into Snape while trying to find the definition of home, and finds himself drawn into Snape's summer Order task by the headmaster, looking for a location outside of London. Along the way, he and Snape learn a few new definitions themselves.

Notes: This AU story is set in the summer after OOTP, but unlike many others set during that time, it doesn't ignore Half-Blood Prince; instead it fills in gaps between OOTP and HPB. Events are altered due to Harry's presence, which, by the end of the story, has already set history for Harry and Snape on a different track, though everyone else is still heading the way they were in canon. This makes for a well thought out AU.
This also unusual for a "Snape adopts Harry" story in that the Dursleys are no more abusive than they were in canon; no violence, just verbal abuse and neglect.

The characterisation of Snape and Harry is very good; Snape is snarky, witty, stern and concerned; Harry is neither a prat nor a martyr, teetering between anger and silent self-control at the start, then growing into affection.

The descriptions of places are very vivid; I got the impression that the author had definitely visited or lived in the places shown.

While the story comes to a reasonable stopping place - just before the start of school - it isn't really finished; one wants to go on to the next story immediately.

"Becoming" by UnexpectedInspiration

Summary: When Sirius Black escapes Azkaban and 8-year-old Harry Potter disappears, the world is thrown into upheaval. What will Britain and Harry be without each other, and who will face the Dark? You only THINK you've read this before. I guarantee you haven't.

Notes: An intriguing what-if, with some nice wrinkles in it and some good original characters.

The characterisation of Sirius strikes a good balance. It acknowledges that he has to recover from Azkaban, but he still has strengths, too.
This Harry is given encouragement and strong affection from Sirius, and his hunger for learning blossoms. He isn't a Super!Harry, thank goodness; the author understands that strengths can also be weaknesses.

We also see the effect that Harry's disappearance has on the other HP characters; some dramatic, some not so much. Harry may have a better (if peripatetic) life, but some people are worse off. In balance, this universe is simply different, neither better nor worse than canon.

"Harry's New Home" by Kbinnz
(Harry Potter)
Summary: One lonely little boy. One snarky, grumpy git. When the safety of one was entrusted to the other, everyone knew this was not going to turn out well... Or was it? Sequel to 'Harry's First Detention'. AU.

Notes: This is delightful. Perhaps it should be subtitled "How To Make Snape Squirm Due To Overly Demonstrative Gryffindors". Lots of fun touches, like the letters Snape mentally composes in reaction to various incidents.
And it isn't all sappy sentimentality, not at all. Snape is as snarky and grumpy as ever.

This story makes much more of the Dursley's abuse of Harry in the way that it affects his view of the world and his expectations of adults; such as Harry thinking that Snape is being lenient when Snape thinks he is being strict. One of the things I really love about this is how Harry correctly interprets the fact that Snape punishes Harry for recklessly putting himself in danger as a sign that Snape actually cares. Also the way Harry appreciates what Snape ''does'' and doesn't let Snape's grumpiness make him think that Snape doesn't care: actions speak louder than words.

In tone, this is rather light-hearted; even though there are adventures and dangerous things, it isn't dark.
Harry here is ickle wee Harry, new to everything. Sometimes I wondered if Harry was being written *too* young, but it was fun enough that I didn't mind.

Another awesome thing about this story is how Snape is so very Slytherin in the way he plots and engineers things to further his goals in protecting Harry.

(Harry Potter)
Summary: Harry continues his Auror training and begins a journey of mastering his unusual and growing powers. Harry, with the help of his adoptive father, is finally making his own way, but fate and prophecy are never completely absent.

Notes: This series continues with great characterisation and plot (and plot twists) and worldbuilding.
This actually takes account of some things from Deathly Hallows as part of the plot, not because this was trying to be DH compliant (because it is already AU) but because it was something that would make the plot more interesting.
I like how, in making Hary having unusual powers, the author has actually made these powers cause as many problems as they solve; or indeed, even more problems than they solve.
Things are not straightforward or obvious; Harry has to grow up even more, for sometimes he is his own worst enemy.
