Excellent character development. The author did a fantastic job changing just a few details and fully exploring the consequences of all those changes (and how fate brought the events within the Hobbit to happen all the same despite those differences). Bilbo is BAMF, the dwarves are all distinctly great, and it really is a fix-it

500.000. Fili's life is pretty good -- he's doing well at university, he gets on well with his uncle and guardian Thorin, and he's never likely to know what it's like to be poor or unwanted. Then Thorin takes in a foster child -- Kili Oakenshield, a long-lost relative whose past is a total mystery. Suddenly, Fili's life gets a whole lot more complicated. But maybe it gets better, too.

In the course of her adventures, Bilbo finds herself pregnant. Without an offer of marriage from Thorin, she returns to the Shire to raise the child with the help of her family.

The King Under the Mountain is heartbroken that Bilbo chooses to leave Erebor, but he cannot blame her. Not after he tried to kill her. There was a time when she would have proposed marriage, but that time is clearly past. If all he can have of her are her letters, then he will be grateful for the missives.

Getting these two to talk just might take divine intervention. Or the intervention of a particularly interested child. [103,031 words]

After years of traveling to Erebor to celebrate the New Year with his dwarven friends, Bilbo Baggins decides that the time has come to stay in the Shire. He has certain familial obligations that have gone unaddressed for too long. Specifically, an orphaned nephew who needs him. Much as he will miss the Durin's Day celebrations, and a certain dwarf in particular, his travels must end. Fortunately, that does not preclude others from traveling to visit him.

Bella Baggins has spent more time than she ever wished to outside of the Shire, and would want nothing more than to spend the rest of her hopefully-long life there. Unfortunately for her, Gandalf has decided that she'd be better suited running for her life, in mortal peril and surrounded by strangers. Like she hasn't had enough of that.

#Dwarven beauty standards

Bilbo does his best to prove that he isn't completely shallow. The Company doesn't seem convinced, for some reason.

After his heroic sacrifice on behalf of the dwarves of Erebor, Bilbo will be well cared for. Naturally, he hates the idea. Crossing half the world, riding barrels, and fighting spiders was supposed to change things. No one should need to carry him anymore. Thorin understands such pride better than most, but he will stop at nothing to have the hobbit safe in his arms.

When he opens his eyes again, he finds himself in his old bed in his old home in his old body. Is this death? Or a trick of magic? Either way, Bilbo recognizes a second chance when he sees one, and this time his adventure with Thorin is going to go a bit differently.

The alphas go into rut after battle as a result of all that adrenaline. Bilbo sits back with the betas and laughs, or tries to.

For as long as Frodo could remember, his beloved Uncle Bilbo was known around the Shire for his shocking habit of disappearing for long periods of time. Bilbo never told anybody where he was going or when he expected to be back, and didn't seem to care what other people thought of such disrespectable inconstancy.

In a Middle Earth where dwarves dream of Heartsongs and hobbits carry the name of their fated partner as private Mark, Bilbo Baggins had never been able to properly translate the strange rows of runes inscribed on his wrist.

And likewise, Thorin Oakenshield had never imagined he would hear the voice of his Heartsong from a fussy little gentlehobbit.

Dís doesn't appreciate it when people flirt with her brother. Most specifically, her very rich and married brother. So, when a bunch of dwarven harpies attempt to run the princess' favorite hobbits out of the Lonely Mountain, Dís decides to take matters into her own vengeful hands.

Never underestimate the ingenuity of a pissed off dwarven princess.
