Glimpses behind the exalted persona of Thailand's king - Denis Gray
October 14, 2016 12:54 am

Denis Gray

... indeed when appearing before the public or during the thousands of state and religious ceremonies over which he presided, King Bhumibol Adulyadej assumed the role of “dhammaraja,” the impassive, righteous Buddhist monarch, an heir to 800 unbroken years of royal rule, the dominant figure in Thailand’s modern history.

But my own most vivid recollections of the world’s longest reigning monarch, who died Thursday at the age of 88, are rather different.

10/13/16 - ... He said enacting any legal measure for which royal proclamation would be needed would pose a challenge.

“At the moment, we don’t have King Bhumibol anymore, and the Crown Prince has not yet accepted his role as king. It would be proclaimed in whose name? With whose royal signature” Somsak wrote online Thursday night.

Thailand's heir apparent Maha Vajiralongkorn raises fears – and eyebrows | World news | The Guardian
10/13/16 - Thailand’s Crown Prince Maha Vajiralongkorn, a three-times divorced playboy who made his pet poodle an air chief marshal in the Thai military, poses perhaps the biggest challenge for both the country’s monarchists and its ruling junta in coming weeks, following the death of his father, King Bhumibol Adulyadej.

Thailand's revered king dies after 70 years on throne - Denis Gray ☆ ☆ ☆ ☆
Denis Gray knew Bhumibol personally.

10/13/16 - ... In his final years, Bhumibol retreated increasingly behind palace walls. Some cited poor health and others speculated he was dispirited about the succession and future of the monarchy.

Some of his private conversations at the time reflected a deep concern that Thailand had lost much of the core culture he had sought to embody all his life.

Twilight of the king | The Economist
7/23/16 - ... Whether it comes in weeks or years, the king’s passing will be more than a milestone. His death may set loose centrifugal forces that a coup in 2014 sought to contain, but seems destined in the long run only to aggravate. Below the surface, Thailand is deeply fractured. And so the army-enforced calm accompanying the king’s twilight is fragile. Not least of the problems is that his successor, the crown prince, Maha Vajiralongkorn, is deeply unpopular. After Bhumibol’s death the country, a crucial ally of America’s in South-East Asia, risks descending further into civil strife and economic dislocation, as an elite around the palace resists popular calls for a greater say in politics and a more equitable sharing of wealth. At that point, all bets about Thailand’s stability and prosperity may be off.

With King in Declining Health, Future of Monarchy in Thailand Is Uncertain - The New York Times
This is the article which caused the 9/21/15 issue of the International NYT to not be printed in Thailand, but the site has not been blocked.

9/20/15 - ... The royal succession presents the monarchy with an inflection point, and possibly an opportunity.

“The situation of the Thai monarchy will not remain like this for many more years,” Somsak Jeamteerasakul, one of the leading experts on the monarchy, wrote in a Facebook post last December. “There are two options for the future. Either transform to a modern monarchy like in Europe or Japan or don’t change and become definitively demolished (a republic). There is no third choice.”

Some Thais cite the wisdom of a venerated 19th-century king, Chulalongkorn, who wrote an open letter to his son outlining the requirements for a monarch.

Be humble and avoid vengefulness, he advised. “Being a king means not to be wealthy. It means not bullying others.”

Failure to follow this advice, he said, might lead “our clan to disappear.”
