The report added: “A primary contributory factor was the inadequate staffing resources to manage the patient cohort.”

NHS Grampian puts cap on non-urgent surgery over winter - Evening Express
NHS Grampian has confirmed it is only booking category one and two patients, who require surgery within a month or within three months respectively, in January and February.

The health board said the move was part of its winter plans and there would be exceptions where surgeries do not impact on beds. [...] It follows a row in October after NHS Tayside announced it had put on hold all planned, non-urgent operations for three weeks over the festive period. Category three patients, who require surgery within a year, will not be routinely booked for January and February, under NHS Grampian’s plans.

The regulator said a deficit of £92m was now forecast this year - more than twice the original £38m planned for.
Chief executive Ian Dalton said the position was simply "not acceptable".

£1bn funding shortfall may force UK care homes to close, says watchdog | Society | The Guardian
Fees paid by cash-strapped councils fail to meet costs of caring for residents, according to Competition and Markets Authority [...] In its report into the £16bn care homes sector, which covers 410,000 residents and stretches across 11,300 homes, the CMA said “urgent action” was needed because the current regime was “not sustainable” without additional funding.

It suggested that people who paid for their own care were being asked to pay more than they should in order to subsidise council-funded residents.

NHS Budget plan not enough, say bosses - BBC News
NHS Bosses Simon Stevens and Health Improvement have asked for 4bn more each year to meet targets again // Traditionally the health budget has got an extra 4% a year above inflation to help it cope with the ageing population and cost of new drugs and treatments.
Since 2010 that figure has dropped to close to 1% - and this extra money does little to improve that.
Those working in accident and emergency units point out that the £350m for this winter could easily be swallowed up by spending on agency staff.
It is why staff on the front line are still predicting rising waiting times for treatment.

NHS faces even worse winter crisis than last year, watchdog warns | Society | The Guardian
In an update on how the NHS in England performed between July and September, NHSI said hospitals did not succeed in freeing up the target of 2,000-3,000 beds by September, which would have helped them cope with the extra winter demand.

NHS leaders and the health secretary, Jeremy Hunt, told hospitals in the spring that they needed to reduce the number of beds occupied due to “delayed transfers of care” – patients who are fit to leave but cannot safely be discharged – to 3.5% of their total number by September. But 5% of beds are still occupied with such cases, NHSI said.

NHS battle for money: Where will it end? - BBC News
[ Simon Stevens could walk away, creating a new crate for May's government, as BOE Mark Carney did not extend his BOE gov role beyond Brexit ] If there is a significant financial settlement for the NHS in England, Mr Stevens can claim vindication for his strategy.
But if there isn't, he is faced with a difficult choice - either soldier on with a service under great strain and his five-year plan objectives under threat, or walk away.
He will be well aware of the risk he has taken with his speech.
But perhaps he is ready to go if he has to, arguing that at least he tried to get the NHS the money it needed. &! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wXlTwgfL6tU - Head of NHS England demands more money (Channel 4 News) &! 'Bed-blocking' in Scottish hospitals falls by 9.6% - BBC News
About 400 people were left in hospital because the social care support they needed in order to live in their own home was not available, while more than 200 had to wait for a place in a nursing home.
Of those who could not leave hospital in September 2017, 1,140 had to wait for for more than three days.
A third of delayed patients had to wait in hospital for more than six weeks - a 2% increase from last year, despite the fall in the figures overall.

Patients are suffering while the SNP shamefully dithers | Kevin McKenna | Opinion | The Guardian
One senior health professional told me last week: “Yes, there is a backlog for operations, but the issue is the front and back door – not the bit in the middle. They are trying to solve the wrong problem and bringing on these new centres will only add to the problem. In addition, there is a huge problem with a lack of doctors across parts of the system. If they are moving planned care into these new elective centres, how are they going to staff them?”
