This year Aston Martin, McLaren, Ford and Tesla are among the brands staging public global or European debuts of new models, but the secret sauce at Goodwood that elevates it above traditional auto shows is what it calls the "dynamic launch." In other words, it is the first time the car is seen moving. For the crowd attending the four-day event starting Thursday, that is a big deal.

Volvo to skip 2019 Geneva auto show
“The ongoing change in the car industry is creating new audiences for Volvo Cars and new ways of bringing products to the market,” Bjorn Annwall, Volvo's senior vice president of strategy, brand and retail, said in a statement on Friday.

"Automatic attendance at traditional industry events is no longer viable – we must tailor our communications based on how the options complement our messaging, timing and the nature of the technology we are presenting," Annwall said.

For many brands, regional auto shows are big deals
Foresight Research estimates that about 7 million people attended regional and local auto shows in the U.S. during the 2017-18 season. One out of every four new-vehicle buyers attends an auto show before purchasing, Foresight CEO Steve Bruyn said. Most shows don't report attendance, so that comes from household surveys Foresight conducts covering 55 shows in 53 markets.

Can auto shows remain relevant as brands find new ways to debut vehicles?
Beyond video games, automakers have livestreamed unveilings, debuted cars on morning TV shows and launched vehicles at trade expos such as the big CES tech show in Las Vegas, which happens just days before the Detroit show each January. Automakers have increasingly decided it's more worth their money to host private introductions at far-off locations in between auto shows, letting journalists spend a day or two with a vehicle instead of doing just a quick walk-around sandwiched between other unveilings.
