An Unexpected Proposal | Eareniel
As Bilbo sat smoking in his empty hobbit hole, he couldn’t help but wonder – when did his life become so boring? Or better yet – when did his old life stop being enough?

He suspected the answer to that question lay somewhere around the time when he had refused Thorin Oakenshield’s offer of marriage.

An Unexpected Proposal by Eareniel
Thorin proposes unexpectedly after the BoFA, but Bilbo hasn't yet forgiven him for his actions, so he refuses and returns to the Shire. Some years later, Bilbo finally returns to Erebor. Slow burn relationship, with plenty of world-building details and involvement of other characters.

Discovering Mr Baggins by Eareniel (R)
A.K.A. The Quest for Erebor:

The story of a Hobbit, told through the eyes of the dwarves. (94,355 words)

A/N: As you may have guessed from the summary, this story is heavily based on the book (with some elements from the first movie mixed in). Before you hit the back button, because you are sick and tired of reading the Troll Scene for the hundreth time, let me assure you that this is not a verbatim retelling of the book.

When I was re-reading The Hobbit in spring, I noticed that Mr Tolkien tends to skip over a lot of stuff. He takes great care describing the exciting action and the countryside, but not much attention is paid to the relationships among the companions. There are long stretches of time that get swept away with just a few sentences. The beginning is basically: “They rode for a month, nobody spoke to Bilbo much.” and “They spent two weeks in Rivendell. It was nice.” So it got me wondering: what happens in the times that he doesn’t describe?

This is a “behind the scenes” fic. I’m not really rewriting the book, just filling in the blanks that Mr Tolkien left and adding a little slashy embellishment of my own. Most of the story stays true to the original, but I took the liberty to change a few things to suit my needs.

Moon's Notes: Set five years post-BoFA, everybody lives AU, in which Bilbo is justifiably angry at Thorin's threatening to kill him over the Arkenstone and they have issues to work out. That part is good, and is the main reason I'll recommend the fic. It's well-written, and the characters get the chance to actually talk through their conflict resolution instead of it being just swept under the rug for the sake of sex/romance. A rare enough occurrence in fandom, and one I appreciate wholeheartedly.

I'm less fond of it being not-so-much a 'slow burn' fic rather than just using the incredibly annoying and unfair Oblivious!Character Trope. (Hint: It's unfair because the oblivious!character is rarely ever actually being blind to advances... there are simply never any *actual* signs of attraction for them to 'see' distinguishable from purely friendly overtures, and since they can't read bloody minds and no one ever TELLS THEM ANYTHING just how the frickin' hell are they supposed to know?! The only thing worse than the trope itself is how angry I get at those poor characters' so-called friends who spend the entire fic deliberately hiding the truth from them and laughing/mocking at their suffering for their own amusement. Guess what, people? That automatically makes you a Very Bad Friend!) This fic is only slightly redeemed because Dis refuses to be a terrible person and actually *talks* to Bilbo in the end. (I'm still pissed at Fili & Kili though, and resent that Bilbo forgave them so easily.)
