Enjolras and Grantaire have gotten into a quickly escalating prank war at the school where they are teachers. They are each harboring feelings for the other, but instead of recognizing their emotions and communicating like adults, they resort to more and more complex practical jokes. All of Les Amis, and even some of the students, are dragged in to the conflict. Enjolras is trying to work things out, but the line between comedy and tragedy is very, very fine.

Enjolras' daughter has always had bad luck with teachers. At École Myriel, she and her father may find a school worth staying in, and teachers worth keeping close.

“I climbed the fire escape. You left your window open,” Grantaire tells him, almost chidingly, like Enjolras forgot to close his window, like the idea that Enjolras left the window open for him never even occurred to him.

Grantaire has no idea how he got this teaching gig. Sure, he’s got a degree in Art History (as well as Studio Art, but that’s what he does on his own time), but he never thought he’d actually get a job with his degree, besides commissions. And he definitely never thought that job would be teaching fifty-odd wide-eyed first years. He remembers when he was that age. It’s vaguely uncomfortable.

But here he is, in the October of his second year of teaching, standing in front of his introductory Art History class.

brief bit of background for this although it’s probably not that necessary: i have precisely zero experience with the french education system beyond knowing the names for the different year groups so i’ve based this in a private boarding school in england. it’s a made-up one but think rugby, winchester, etc. not quite as elite as eton or harrow. grantaire is there on a loose “sports scholarship”, primarily for fencing but also boxing, and they make him play rugby and hockey too. they tried to make him play cricket for a season but he kept showing up drunk and flashing the opposition supporters so they stopped. basically the idea is that schools like that let their top sportsmen get away with everything because they need them to keep winning so grantaire gets excused a lot of moronic behaviour.

with that aside let’s carry on.

"I'm sorry," Enjolras said.

Jonny's only rule is don't sleep with the students. The first time he sees Patrick lick his lips during class, he revises that rule to don't get caught.

"ENJOLRAAAAAAS!"

Enjolras swore under his breath and began to speed up across the quad, dodging people to get to the communications building.
