AT&T Mobility president: 'Our mobile business is humming' - RCR Wireless News
When AT&T touches its towers for the FirstNet build-out, he said, it does three things: deploy all of its fallow spectrum, 60 megahertz across AWS, WCS and the Band 14 700 MHz that it gained access to with the FirstNet deal; upgrade the electronics and software capabilities to include LTE Advanced Pro features such as 256 QAM modulation, 4×4 MIMO and four component-carrier carrier aggregation (which he said will eventually be upgraded to six-component CA); and hang new hardware that is software-upgradeable to 5G

AT&T cuts jobs despite government favors

AT&T in November 2017 pushed for a corporate tax cut by promising to invest an additional $1 billion in 2018, with CEO Randall Stephenson saying that "every billion dollars AT&T invests is 7,000 hard-hat jobs. These are not entry-level jobs. These are 7,000 jobs of people putting fiber in ground, hard-hat jobs that make $70,000 to $80,000 per year."

The federal tax cut was approved by Congress and President Trump and reportedly gave AT&T an extra $3 billion in cash in 2018

AT&T, Nokia open up the radio’s edge to third party apps | FierceWireless
Michael Murphy, CTO of North America for Nokia, explained that the primary use case right now for REC is the near real-time RAN intelligent controller, or RIC. The O-RAN Alliance, which is a group of carriers and vendors devoted to virtualizing the RAN, developed the RIC platform. The RIC platform is a network element that controls certain aspects of the RAN. Today all these network controls are managed by the vendors that make telco gear. However, in an open source world, the REC opens up the RIC to applications (called xApps) and those xApps can be used to manage the RAN.

AT&T, Inc. (T) Management Presents at Credit Suisse Communications Conference Call (Transcript) | Seeking Alpha
You announced Chicago. Rush hospital, we're going to go put -- do advanced 5G in the patient intake and ambulatory care. We announced Austin as a 5G market. We're doing Samsung robotic manufacturing deployment. And we're building the campus out for Magic Leap to do their next-generation headset with 5G. So everything that we have done has not been to scattershot a city. It's been designed around the enterprise play. And then when you do that, then when you have a handset available and you sell them to the enterprises, that's -- it's for a known application, and normally, the average user is probably spending 70% of their time on a 5G network because that's what they have at work

AT&T's Donovan says telco will take a more incremental approach to fiber builds | FierceTelecom
"I think we are the world leader in our industry in that," Donovan said. "As we get into the denser builds of 5G that will be heavily software (based.) I think we're uniquely positioned as the premier global wireless company as it relates to infrastructure software. So I think 5G is going to be on a decline curve of cost per megabyte, cost per subscriber, that drops much faster than previous technologies as a result of that."

AT&T promised 7,000 new jobs to get tax break; it cut 23,000 jobs instead • Ars Technica
Jon Brodkin:

AT&T has cut more than 23,000 jobs since receiving a big tax cut at the end of 2017, despite lobbying heavily for the tax cut by claiming that it would create thousands of jobs.

AT&T in November 2017 pushed for the corporate tax cut by promising to invest an additional $1 billion in 2018, with CEO Randall Stephenson saying that "every billion dollars AT&T invests is 7,000 hard-hat jobs. These are not entry-level jobs. These are 7,000 jobs of people putting fiber in ground, hard-hat jobs that make $70,000 to $80,000 per year."

The corporate tax cut was subsequently passed by Congress and signed into law by President Trump on December 22, 2017. The tax cut reportedly gave AT&T an extra $3 billion in cash in 2018.

But AT&T cut capital spending and kept laying people off after the tax cut. A union analysis of AT&T's publicly available financial statements "shows the telecom company eliminated 23,328 jobs since the Tax Cut and Jobs Act passed in late 2017, including nearly 6,000 in the first quarter of 2019," the Communications Workers of America (CWA) said yesterday.

AT&T's total employment was 254,000 as of December 31, 2017 and rose to 262,290 by March 31, 2019. But AT&T's overall workforce increased only because of its acquisition of Time Warner Inc. and two smaller companies, which together added 31,618 employees during 2018, according to an AT&T proxy statement cited in the CWA report.

Has there ever been so much dishonesty on show as there is at the top of the US now? It's just stunning.

Deeper Dive—How AT&T’s 5G will change LiveU’s broadcasting backpacks | FierceVideo
. Prior to LiveU’s backpack live broadcast solutions – which bond together cellular signals from current 4G and LTE networks along with satellite and Wi-Fi connectivity – broadcasters had to drive big satellite or microwave trucks for remote broadcasting. Now, broadcasters can use the backpacks to compress video using HEVC, split up the video and sent it over the bonded network, and then reassemble it on the server after it arrives.

Cohen said now about 95% of breaking broadcast news is produced using LiveU’s backpacks. And, through LiveU’s newly announced 5G trials with AT&T, the company’s backpacks could soon break news ever faster and more reliably.
