Amnesty International launches new global network of researchers to deploy digital verification for human rights
South China Morning Post

"Amnesty International is training a global network of student researchers, including some from Hong Kong, to integrate digital verification into human rights investigations...The digital verification corps is working with 120 students from six universities, including the University of Hong Kong, the University of California, Berkeley, the University of Toronto, the University of Cambridge, the University of Essex and the University of Pretoria. The students, from different academic backgrounds such as law and journalism, are trained in open source investigation methods, like reverse image search, geolocation search and shadow analysis...Because of the massive amount of content involved, the task is time-consuming and can take days or weeks. The students conduct research on human rights violations and search for online content that can be used to illustrate the cases." - Fiona Sun, South China Morning Post

State-sponsored hackers target Amnesty International Hong Kong with sophisticated cyber-attack - @amnesty
"Amnesty International Hong Kong can reveal it has been the target of a sophisticated state-sponsored cyber-attack, consistent with those carried out by hostile groups linked to the Chinese government. The cyber-attack was first detected on 15 March 2019, when state-of-the-art security monitoring tools detected suspicious activity on Amnesty International Hong Kong’s local IT systems. Cyber security experts took immediate action to protect the systems and to commence an investigation into the attack. The initial findings reveal the attacks were perpetrated using tools and techniques associated with specific advanced persistent threat groups (APTs). Cyber forensic experts were able to establish links between the infrastructure used in this attack and previously reported APT campaigns associated with the Chinese government." - Amnesty International

Hate Crimes in 2018, Reveals ‘Halt the Hate’ Website (Amnesty India)
A disturbing number of alleged hate crimes – including assault, rape and murder – were reported in 2018 against people from marginalized groups, especially Dalits and Muslims, said Amnesty India, as it released data recorded on its interactive website, ‘Halt the Hate’. “The first step to ensuring justice and ending impunity for hate crimes – where people are targeted because they belong to a particular group – is to highlight their occurrence,” said Aakar Patel of Amnesty India.

Amnesty International has toxic working culture, report finds | World news | The Guardian
Instead, the adversarial culture, failures in management and pressures of workload were among the most significant contributors to wellbeing issues.

One of the issues facing the organisation was a “martyrdom culture”, in which staff would sacrifice their own wellbeing by taking on huge workloads – a clear “recipe for overload and burnout”. The restructuring had “taken a considerable toll” on staff wellbeing, it said.

A separate inquiry into McGregor’s death concluded that she had been ...

Amnesty International Plans Protests of Google’s China Search Engine
"Amnesty International has announced a new protest campaign calling on Google to cancel its controversial plan to launch a censored search engine in China. The human rights group on Monday launched a petition against the search engine and said that on Tuesday, it will stage demonstrations outside Google offices in the United States, the United Kingdom, Australia, Canada, Germany, Hong Kong, the Netherlands, and Spain. Google’s plan for China would 'irreparably damage internet users’ trust in the tech company,' Amnesty said in statement, and 'would set a dangerous precedent for tech companies enabling rights abuses by governments.'" - Ryan Gallagher, The Intercept

+ A group of Google employees operating under the name "Google Employees Against Dragonfly" announced its solidarity with Amnesty, issuing a statement that read in part: "Our opposition to Dragonfly is not about China: we object to technologies that aid the powerful in oppressing the vulnerable, wherever they may be. The Chinese government certainly isn’t alone in its readiness to stifle freedom of expression, and to use surveillance to repress dissent. Dragonfly in China would establish a dangerous precedent at a volatile political moment, one that would make it harder for Google to deny other countries similar concessions."

+ Over 130 Google employees have publicly signed on to the effort, while Google responded to a request for comment by referencing a previous statement on the matter, calling the work "exploratory" and "not close to launching," reports Buzzfeed's Davey Alba:
