Female Editors Reject AfterEllen, Other Sites' Anti-Trans Agenda
The editors of Diva, Curve, Autostraddle, LOTL, Tagg, and Lez Spread The Word released the following joint statement on Tuesday:

"Following further vitriolic attacks on trans people in our media, the world’s leading publications for lesbians are coming together to send an unapologetic message of support and solidarity to the trans community.

DIVA, Curve, Autostraddle, LOTL, Tagg and Lez Spread The Word believe that trans women are women and that trans people belong in our community. We do not think supporting trans women erases our lesbian identities; rather we are enriched by trans friends and lovers, parents, children, colleagues and siblings.

We strongly condemn writers and editors who seek to foster division and hate within the LGBTQI community with trans misogynistic content, and who believe “lesbian” is an identity for them alone to define. We condemn male-owned media companies who profit from the traffic generated by these controversies.

We also strongly condemn the current narrative peddled by some feminists, painting trans people as bullies and aggressors – one which reinforces transphobia and which must be challenged so that feminism can move forward.

AfterEllen, site of record for queer women, closes leaving void in lesbian culture.
On Tuesday afternoon, the queer internet found out it was losing one of its precious few bright stars. The editor in chief of AfterEllen, a 14-year-old news and entertainment site for queer women, announced in an emotional Tumblr post that the site was “effectively shutting down.” After Friday, Trish Bendix wrote, the site will no longer have an editorial staff.

From a lesbian-loving lesbian to AfterEllen: Please don’t break my heart
Guest writer Caitlin Logan shares her thoughts and feelings on AfterEllen’s worrying proximity to anti-trans politics.

Some controversy has arisen lately around AfterEllen, “the pop culture site that plays for your team”. The site was taken over by a new company and fell victim to significant disinvestment earlier last year, leading to a slightly acrimonious parting of ways with the then editor and a number of staff writers. The site was pronounced dead, only to jump out of its grave and deny that it had ever lost consciousness.

Now with a new Editor-in-Chief, it seems as though AfterEllen has adopted a new ideology too. Attention was called to the fact that the new Editor, Memoree Joelle, signed, promoted and commented in support of a petition to “drop the L” from ‘LGBT’, which explains in its first paragraph that the petition was set up following a lack of response to an earlier petition to “drop the T” from ‘LGBT’. The petition is addressed to HRC, GLAAD, NCLR, Lambda Legal, The Advocate, and HuffPo Gay Voices.

The second paragraph elaborates: “The addition of T to the LGBT has resulted in Lesbians being silenced and threatened, all women and girls to be at risk for our safety, and our interests to take a backseat to those of transgenderist males who co-opt our name and culture.”

trish bendix - Eulogy for the Living
Over the last 10 years, I’ve published a lot of very personal things on AfterEllen. I’ve written things people didn’t agree with. I’ve written reviews of work created by peers that they didn’t necessarily love. I’ve written about being married and then not.

Daily Dot | Sterek wins! "Teen Wolf" couple is the most popular in fandom
An article about the AfterElton slash bracket that also mentions AfterEllen's parallel femslash bracket. Faberry is now going up against Sterek in a final vote -- normally I'd predict that boys would win hands down, but those Glee shippers are a force to be reckoned with.

"And some fans felt that the emphasis on Sterek was actually hurting queer visibility. “Shipping Stiles/Derek is not a ‘win’ for homosexual relationships represented on television,” vented tynedalecode on Tumblr, “if you then refuse to acknowledge that this has caused the erasure of the actually gay character on the same show.”"
