2017 Mercedes-AMG CLA45 | In-Depth Model Review | Car and Driver
Because performance is more impressive than size.
What’s smaller than the Chevrolet Camaro and Ford Mustang, has four doors, hails from Germany, and spanks those star-spangled stalwarts on the drag strip? Survey says: the 375-hp Mercedes-AMG CLA45. While its nemesis—the amazing Audi RS3—is even quicker, the mini Merc costs less and looks crazier. It also has an equally outrageous hatchback counterpart, the Mercedes-AMG GLA45. Still, the CLA45 has a harsher ride than the Audi and an interior plagued by cheap plastics. Its volcanic acceleration erupts from a turbo four-cylinder that feeds a seven-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission and standard all-wheel drive. Add a fiery exhaust note and hard-edged handling and this pocket-size road rocket packs more performance than its size suggests.
Volcanic acceleration and exhaust note, profound handling, excellent fuel economy.
Harsh ride quality, cramped rear seat, the Audi RS3 is more spectacular.
This pocket-size rocket proves performance is more impressive than size.

Mercedes-AMG and Cigarette Racing Unveil 3100-HP 515 Project One | News | Car and Driver | Car and Driver Blog
Automakers and boat builders don’t often mix, unless we’re talking about Mercedes-AMG and Cigarette Racing, which have been working together since 2007. Indeed, AMG and CR mix it up to bring some form of floating fantasy inspired by an AMG-branded product—real or imagined—to the annual Miami International Boat Show each February. Past efforts include an SLS-inspired 46-foot speedboat in 2010, a G63-inspired Huntress, a Cigarette AMG Electric Drive concept in 2013, and last year’s incredible 3100-hp Mercedes-AMG GT R–inspired 50-foot GT R Marauder that celebrated AMG’s 50th anniversary. How to top that? With this year’s marine masterpiece: the Cigarette Racing 515 Project One.

2019 Mercedes-Benz C-class Sedan Official Photos and Info | News | Car and Driver
More power, more technology, more luxury.
Mercedes-Benz is moving in a new design direction, both inside and out. Going forward, completely new models not named G-class will feature smooth, creaseless bodies created to be, Mercedes says, beautiful, pure forms. The interiors continue to evolve as some of the most luxurious cabins on the market and will center around one large display screen that spans to incorporate the driver’s instrument cluster and the center infotainment screen. Daimler has already applied these motifs to the latest CLS-class and A-class models. The C-class sedan will have to wait a few more years to fully embrace the new themes, though, as the new 2019 model is a mere refresh.
Yet even while the C isn’t due for an all-new replacement for a few more years, this mid-cycle update brings some notable changes. Most significantly, in the engine bay the turbocharged 2.0-liter inline-four now produces 255 horsepower, up from 241. Torque remains the same at 273 lb-ft, routed through a nine-speed automatic transmission that joined the range in 2017 (replacing a seven-speed auto). Mercedes also claims that the tweaked engine is more efficient, but fuel-economy estimates are pending.

Mercedes-AMG’s C63 S Cabrio has it all: Power, sound, fuel use, and cost | Ars Technica
Driving fun is worth something, but at over $100,000 as tested this one isn't perfect.
The vast chasm between "want" and "need" is a space littered with high-cost products, be they high-performance automobiles or super-premium ice cream. While the sclerotic effects of 55 percent (or 11 grams) of the daily recommended dosage of saturated fat in one serving of Ben & Jerry’s Chubby Hubby is a moderated health risk, so too can be the 503hp (375kW) in the Mercedes-AMG C63 S Cabrio after one 4.0-second blast to 60 mph. Also, considering that the very first C-Class AMG model ever offered in the US market 22 years ago belted out a whopping 276hp (206kW) from its 3.6-liter inline-6, power is a relative thing.
That 4.0-liter engine pumps two turbos' worth of pressure into eight cylinders to net its embarrassment of riches. (Non-S C63 models get by with a mere 469hp, or 350 kW.) Those turbos are nestled in the valley of the engine's V, as on BMW's current crop of turbocharged V8s and Audi's V-type engines. This shortens the plumbing, reduces the possibility of lag, and also helps get the turbos hotter (which helps produce boost quicker).
But it's not just the engine that dominates driving impressions of the C63. You hear the throaty V8, of course, but there's also a slight shake of the windshield header thanks to its very stiff suspension over bumpy roads. The car is but 187 inches long—a Toyota Camry is longer—but it feels bigger, and markedly so compared to other models in the current C-Class range. When riding around with the top down, you still feel ensconced in the car thanks to its high waistline.

2018 Mercedes-Benz S450 Test | Review | Car and Driver
Why settle for less?
Buying a Mercedes-Benz S-class with a six-cylinder engine is like buying the smallest yacht that can still cross the Atlantic Ocean. No matter what’s under the hood, the biggest and baddest Benz sedan is a highly indulgent purchase—so why would anyone skimp on the engine just to save a few bucks?
Sublime ride quality, strong fuel economy, as sumptuous as other S-classes.
Not as quick as the V-8, largely insignificant cost savings.

2020 Mercedes-Benz S-class Will Get Big Changes | News | Car and Driver
Foresight is 20-20.
What It Is: Mercedes-Benz’s nascent next-generation S-class sedan, captured here wearing a minimum of camouflage and what could be the production bodywork. The current S-class was introduced for 2014, so it’s due for a total redesign—particularly given that most of the other models in Mercedes’s lineup are younger.
Why It Matters: Each new S-class generation establishes the brand’s newest styling and technological direction for the rest of the lineup, and this one will be no different. Our sources in Stuttgart indicate that the new S-class’s interior will be seriously upgraded—likely incorporating even more technology—although we struggle to imagine how Mercedes could make the environment any more plush. However the automaker reinvents that wheel, expect its look and capabilities to trickle down to lesser Mercedes cars and SUVs.

Mercedes-AMG Fastback Caught Nearly Naked | News | Car and Driver | Car and Driver Blog
Eagle-eyed spy photographers have captured our best look at yet at Mercedes-AMG’s upcoming stand-alone sedan. Previewed by the GT concept at the 2017 Geneva auto show, the production model is expected to make its debut in March at this year’s Geneva show. Looking much like the concept car that preceded it, the GT four-door brings the style of Mercedes-AMG’s GT sports car to the sedan segment. Despite its GT coupe–inspired looks, it is anticipated to share its underpinnings with the Mercedes-Benz CLS-class and E-class sedans. A hatchback body style and a V-8–only powertrain lineup should help separate the AMG four-door from its more plebeian chassis mates.

Mercedes-Benz A-class Sedan Spied Winter Testing in U.S. | News | Car and Driver | Car and Driver Blog
Mercedes-Benz has just revealed its new A-class compact hatchback for the European market, but it isn’t coming to the United States (Canada will be getting it, though). Luckily, an eagle-eyed Twitter user sent us these photos of the upcoming baby Benz that is slated to come to the States: the A-class sedan, which is looking more and more production-ready as it prepares for its U.S. debut later this year.

2019 Mercedes A-class Debuts, Will Spawn at Least Three U.S. Models | News | Car and Driver | Car and Driver Blog
It’s kind of funny that the Mercedes-Benz A-class has never been offered in the United States, given that the U.S.—and more specifically, California—was a key reason the brand ventured to launch a vehicle below the C-class at all. See, in the early 1990s, it looked as if California was hellbent on going electric. And Mercedes-Benz felt it needed a car like the A-class to stay in business there. Hence its sandwich-style floor construction, with a space reserved for batteries, and its altogether ultraefficient design.
When legislators of the time cooled on the idea of electrification, work on the A-class had progressed so far that Mercedes-Benz decided to turn the car into a conventionally powered model. It hewed to its dorky/efficient vibe for two generations, until 2012, at which point the A-class morphed into a sporty and lifestyle-oriented alternative to the Volkswagen Golf and the Audi A3. Now comes the fourth-gen A-class, and it follows in the tire tracks of its most recent predecessor.

The Big Three German Automakers Are Becoming More and More Alike | Feature | Car and Driver
Once distinct, the cars of Audi, BMW, and Mercedes-Benz are increasingly borrowing the brand character of the others.
Automakers have long believed that the grass is greener on the other side of the fence. Yet an etymological investigation into the origins of this well-worn phrase reveals that the literal translation is even more apt. What the poet Ovid actually wrote in The Art of Love—basically a how-to guide for putative Roman pickup artists—was “fertilior seges est alienis semper in agris,” or, “the crop is always greater in the lands of another.” Which neatly summarizes the financial motivation behind the me-too mentality that has sent Audi, BMW, and Mercedes chasing one another’s tails—and sometimes sniffing one another’s butts.
It hasn’t been long since the three luxury automakers’ portfolios were as distinct from one another as the numerous different types of German sausage. BMW produced the archetypal sports sedan, keen and responsive if short on practicality. Mercs felt and often drove like bank vaults, a perceived solidity that continued even when the brand went through its quality nadir in the early naughties—an era that proved it was possible to make a door that would thunk even when filled with rust holes. Audi was technical and slightly aloof, delivering grip and performance without a huge amount of that distracting driver-involvement stuff. Each carmaker had its fans and its own carefully guarded place in the world.

2018 Mercedes-Maybach S560 4Matic Test | Review | Car and Driver
Best appreciated from the back.
The Mercedes-Maybach S560 4Matic ultra-luxury sedan is for the affluent buyer who prefers understated elegance to unadulterated ostentation. Whereas the Bentley Flying Spur and the Rolls-Royce Ghost are both equal parts opulent indulgences and style statements, the Maybach pairs its lavish innards with bodywork similar to that of the shorter and more demure Mercedes-Benz S-class.
High-class cabin, stretch-out rear seat, seriously quick.
Self-driving features still need work, still resembles an S-class too much.

2018 Mercedes-AMG E63 S | In-Depth Model Review | Car and Driver
A new king is crowned.
All new for 2018, the Mercedes-AMG E63 S is the German brand’s mid-size, ultra-performance flagship sedan. Equipped with a 603-hp twin-turbocharged 4.0-liter V-8 engine, this all-wheel-drive supersedan is armed with an additional 207 horses compared with the already impressive Mercedes-AMG E43. Unsurprisingly, the all-wheel-drive E63 S is mind-blowingly quick. More astonishing, however, are the E63’s lateral capabilities, which are as impressive as its straight-line speed. An available Drift mode disengages the driven front wheels and turns the maniacal Mercedes into a rear-drive monster that’s eager to engage in tail-out antics. Left in all-wheel drive, it proved to be the fastest sedan we’ve ever tested in our annual Lightning Lap competition. Combine all this with the model’s communicative chassis, feelsome steering, accommodating interior, and luxurious trimmings, and the result is an exceptional vehicle even in this class of extraordinary machines.
Insanely quick, insanely grippy, insanely well built.
Uncomfortable optional performance seats, greatness doesn’t come cheap.
The new king of mid-size supersedans.

2018 Mercedes-Benz E350e Plug-In Hybrid First Drive | Review | Car and Driver
An E-class with extra "e".
The lack of any diesel versions of the current E-class in the United States is cause for sadness and regret in some quarters, but we can understand Mercedes-Benz’s reluctance to bring them here given the awkwardness of that whole Dieselgate thing. Yet the decision not to import the plug-in-hybrid version of the E is more surprising, especially since it has been on sale in Europe for more than a year and uses a version of the turbocharged inline-four gasoline engine found in the base E300 combined with a generous dose of electrical assistance.
Fuel economy, some all-electric range, haptic accelerator pedal.
Added mass, nonlinear brake-pedal modulation, not sold here—yet.
